Poured from a 650 ml bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.

Appearance: Pours a fairly hazy golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About two fingers of white head that fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A big citrus hop aroma with a nice backing of soft malts. Big scent of citrus up front with good hints of orange, grapefruit, mango, pineapple, tangerine, and some peach. Also some grass and a little pine in the hop mix. Bready pale malts with hints of soft biscuit, caramel, cracker, and yeast. Also some hints of honey add to the sweetness. A citrus forward and juicy aroma that is not overly bitter smelling. Very good aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a big juicy taste of ripe citrus hops with some bready malts. Sharp and fairly bitter taste of hops upfront with big notes of citrus orange, mango, grapefruit, pineapple, tangerine, papaya, and peach. Some earthy pine resin. Soft bready malts with a taste of cracker, biscuit, caramel, and yeast. A little taste of sweet honey with the malts. Nicely juicy and pulpy. Good citrus taste with just the right amount of bitterness. Really good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, juicy, and slightly chewy. Pretty smooth and the alcohol heat is hidden very well.

Overall: A very good imperial IPA. Great citrus flavor and balance. My first 3 Floyds brew and I'm looking forward to trying more.

Three Floyds returns to western Wisconsin, and this one's high on my list to try. Tasted 15 February 2013.

Pours a mostly clear, medium-light golden orange. Half a finger of white head, good retention, fine lacing. Not bad.

Smell is nice, but I expect to be bowled over by hop aromas, and I'm not. Sweet, with candied fruit against a soft background of pine. I like what I'm getting, but it's faint, and I want more. As it warms, more tropical fruit emerges, juicy and sweet.

The taste of this beer is unlike any DIPA I've encountered. It's powerfully sweet, without the bitter blast. Tastes more like a hoppy barleywine than a DIPA, with the malts and the residual sugars dominating the flavor. I like it, but I'm struggling with that IPA label. Where's the bitter? It's there, though faint. On balance, the tastiness overrides the unconventional nature.

Feel is quite pleasant. Medium-bodied, sticky, with carbonation that pops and zips, rising and fading in a parabolic arc.

I like this beer. But it's not all that hoppy. I tend to like IPAs with a hefty malt bill to balance the hops, but this one is more malt-heavy than even I want. I like the beer, but the hop character isn't as potent as I want. Lots of "buts", which says a lot about it. It's really good; it could be a whole lot better.
