On tap at DLD15. Served in a plastic cup.

Appears like any other BADL; dark black body, half-finger dark brown head, good retention time, no lacing that I note. Smells of quite a bit more coffee than the base does; but the base beer does have a hefty presence. Sweetness, umami, a bit of oak and vanilla. The coffee is fairly strong and lends a nice complexity to the aroma. Flavour is not surprising, but it seems to all work together better than it does on the nose. The coffee blends in well with the Dark Lord base, seemingly accentuating the coffee that is already there. It makes me wonder if Three Floyds just needs to add more coffee to the base, as I typically don't taste it at all in the regular Dark Lord. With the coffee here, it adds more on top of the barrel-aging, even if it doesn't add a lot more unique flavours that a barrel aged Dark Lord wouldn't have. It works well here. Mouthfeel is of course thick, full bodied, oily and otherwise smooth, no heat, a nice one to sip on. Overall, a good variant that bolsters a particular aspect of Dark Lord that always seems to be missing from the base beer.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Viscous black. Small khaki head.

Smell - Chocolate. Light brandy aroma. Oak. A bit of vanilla. Dark chocolate and sweet smelling.

Taste - Sharp coffee. Dark chocolate and fudge. Cognac kicks in and is more distinctive here. Oak and vanilla are stronger. A little soy sauce in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Really heavy. Boozy. Everything people love about Dark Lord and everything I dislike about Dark Lord.

Overall - The coffee cuts the sugars nicely. Not a ton of cognac, but what's there is nice. It's still really sweet and the soy sauce isn't quite masked.

One of the best beers I had a dark lord day, and one of the first. Apparently the base beer has coffee, which FFF is happy to advertise, yet it doesn't come through in the taste at all.

This variant changes all that, and man is it great. I'm not sure what happens to dark lord in the barrel, but it turns into something magical. The coffee really comes through and cuts the sweetness nicely.

Overall, they knocked this one out of the park.

Look - Pitch black, like used motor oil. Very little head.

Smell - the best smelling stout I've had to date. Coffee aromas, all the typical imperial stout ingredients are abundantly present.

Taste - properly cellared DL is an imposing stout. This is a whole notch above that. The ingredients seem like they are blended in perfect balance. It's everything I look for in a stout.

Feel - smoooooooth. No hint of booziness. Just traces of all the ingredients used in excellent unison.

Overall - I shared this with 2 of my friends, and I'm glad I did. Having something like this to one's self would've possibly been overwhelming. Besides, something as nice as this should be shared. One of the top 3 stouts I've ever had.

Pleasant surprise among all the dark lord variants during bottle share. Very unique and balanced roasty coffee notes paired with a hint of sweet cognac, like base Dark Lord needs any more sweetness to it. Coffee has probably faded over the year but still pronounced, no alcohol burn at all and the usual thickness for DL variants. Outstanding.

Still sweet, but not as bad as standard DL.
Coffee is faint, but there especially near room temp.
Milkshake type body!!! Mouthfeel is everything with this beer.

Loved this beer. Coffee was most prominent on the nose, could tell it had faded a bit in taste. Cognac complimented the base beer extremely well. Incredibly smooth

The smell on this bottle was amazing. I want this as an air freshener in my car. Sweet, oakey, coffee goodness.

The taste was completely overwhelming. Regular Dark Lord has a lot going on. This stuff just blow it out of the water. Almost too much for my meager palate to appreciate. As it warmed it just got more and more complex. So rich, reminded me of a huge slice of chocolate cake that tastes so good you want to keep eating but because it's so rich it's hard to continue. Really impressive.

Overall, I'm glad I was able to share this one. Split a 750mL bottle with my wife but easily could have split 4 ways and still have been more than satisfied.
