Splitting the difference between what's sour and what's red, it turns out that red wins. Three Floyds and Skeleton Witch's collaboration beer yields this German-style Berlinerweise wit a lot of balance, intrigue and complexity but falls short on the necessary sourness to compete favorably with the style.

Red Death's hearty mauve, rosy hue is delicate and whimsy with a brisk scent of brine, lime, apple and dry white wine. With a fluid and wisping froth, its taste hits the palate with the taste of apple jolly rancher candies. Sweet, sour and savory, flavors of red berries, green cherry and gooseberry all come to mind.

As the sweetness lifts, the sourness takes hold and shares tones of red grape, red cherry and currant. With a slim shade of candy holding a moderate thread, a mild earthiness of cork, cellar funk and weathered oak adds a lofty musk with a peppery, cinnamon, and medicinal balance looming.

Finishing medium-light and with the tethers of candied malt hanging on, the beer's strive for utmost sourness, supreme dryness and clean lactic dryness is hindered by the "red" part of death. It turns out that when it comes down to his beer ultimatums, death largely looses out.

Bomber purchased from local Whole Foods for $16, dated 8/29/2016.

Cloudy, opaque light blood-orange elixir poured into a snifter. Thin white rim, scant lacing.

Cherry, pear, pineapple, funk and sour cheese with a nice tart and tang. Really nice.

Wonderful combo of cherries, pears, melon with a nice backbone of sour/funk that keeps me wanting.

Light body, tangy, sour with a nice dry finish. The alcohol is non existent.

Hesitant to pull the trigger on this bomber but well worth the price. 3F's have done a remarkable job with this sour, one that really comes through with the fruit and funk. Well done!

22 ounce bottle, bottled on 8-29-16. Served in a 3 Floyds pint glass, the beer pours a hazy reddish/orange color with about a half inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. Aroma is fruity and tart, the brew smells like tart cherries, lime, and green apples. I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some tart berries and grainy malt flavors noticeable. There's a good amount of sourness, nice and enjoyable. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's easy to drink with a moderate amount of carbonation. I liked this brew, glad I got to try it! $16.99 a bomber.

Bottle shared by Darrell. Pink grapefruit body with a small, off-white head that rapidly fades to nil. Aromas of funk, dough, brett, cherry. An odd note of rubber hose. The fruit component is a bit weird / muted. Lacking cohesion. Unrefined with an odd cherry sweetness. Needs work.

22oz bottle sampled in a shaker pint. Bottled 8/29/16.

Pours reddish-orange with an initial fizz that puffs up and fades like soda. Looks still. Smell is tart, cherry maybe.

Taste is sour, lemon-cherry. Not bad, but not special.

Mouthfeel is smooth and dry, but flat. Overall, not bad.

Nice cherry flavor, some green apple tartness. More tart than sour. Nice balance smooth.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 8/29/2016. Pours slightly hazy deep orange/light reddish color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense white head with decent retention, that reduces a thin ring of lace. Minimal lacing on the glass. Aromas of big tart/sour cherry, berries, lemon, lime, green apple, white wine, oak, hay, straw, pepper, wheat, and cracker; with lighter notes of caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, almond, funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, cherries, and moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart/sour cherry, berries, lemon, lime, green apple, white wine, oak, hay, straw, pepper, wheat, and cracker; with lighter notes of caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, almond, funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Moderate fruity/lactic tart/sourness and light yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour cherry, berries, lemon, lime, green apple, white wine, oak, hay, straw, pepper, wheat, cracker, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. A bit tangy from fruit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, cherries, and moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/sourness balance, and zero puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from tart/sourness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with very smooth and moderate creamy/grainy/acidic balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Zero warming alcohol for 8.5%. Overall this is an awesome blended sour ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, cherries, and moderate pale malt flavors; extremely smooth and easy to drink for the ABV, with the balanced acidity. Great complexity and oak presence from being a blend of Berliner weisse and an older grand cru sour. A highly enjoyable offering.
