When it comes to hops, the 3 Floyds Brewing Company can do no wrong. So their experimental, single hop series hits a line drive, straight up the middle with their second at bat in the Floy Division series.

Floy Division II rounds the nose with a fruit forward, spicy hop bouquet with hints of grassiness and peppery character. Bright and honey amber, the beer caries a light haze and floats a rich eggshell lather. Light honey and caramel coat the tongue like graham cracker ahead of the hoppy onslaught to come.

And as the sweetness retreats, the hops continue to grow. From floral and botanical, the taste develops a freshly zested orange, pink grapefruit and a hint of lemon in a citrusy middle palate. As the taste rolls into finish, the taste turns to apricot and white raisin before a peppery finish of sharp grassiness and herbal fennel close out the bitter finish.

Medium bodied and creamy early, the beer trends drying while favoring a crisp, clean and refreshing tone. Bitterness resonates strongly in aftertaste with the taste of peppery, chive and citrus peel. Rarely do single hop beers demonstrate the complex hop layers that give hop heads the breadth of aroma, flavor and bitterness to satisfaction. But the hops used here, and with the skillful brewer approach, Floy Division II covers all the bases.

Bottled on date faded off, looks like sometime in July. Pours a brownish/orange color, hazy with a good amount of particulates, healthy foam and creamy lacing. Smell is mild dank hops with underlying malt. Taste is a balance of bitter and juicy/citrusy hops, slight malty presence. Creamy mouth filling feel, moderate alcohol presence. Very balanced, very flavorful, very good beer.

Pours slightly hazy, orange-gold in color with beautiful one inch head. Taste is big grapefruit hops, pine, mineral and slight biscuit. Very bitter with slight sweetness that wants to pop through, medium bodied, with medium-low carbonation. Makes for a solid above average sipper. Very west coast in feel. Nice beer, but I prefer others from the brewery.

1 PINT 6 FL OZ bottle
Served in a Three Floyds teku glass

This beer pours amber with a slight haze and burnt orange highlights. It is topped with an inch of beige head that leaves a little lacing.

It has a grassy and bitter aroma and some earthiness.

The taste is grassy and vegetal with a fair amount of bitterness.

Medium mouthfeel

This beer is just not in my flavor wheelhouse.

22oz bottle dated 7/10/17 poured into a Teku
A: Hazy orange with a two-finger head
S: Dank, tons of pine, some earth and a bit of tropical fruit
T: Matches the nose, quite bitter
M: Medum-bodied, immensely dry/bitter
O: This might be for some, always nice to see new hops, but it needs a bit more fruit

22 ounce bottle into signature teku glass, bottled on 7/10/2017. Pours moderately hazy golden orange/amber color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to as nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, mint, anise, pepper, pine, honey, bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/earthy/spicy hops and bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, mint, anise, pepper, pine, honey, bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, melon, lemon/orange rind, mint, anise, pepper, pine, honey, bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy/spicy hops and bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/sticky, and lightly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7.5%. Overall this is an excellent IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/earthy/spicy hops and bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy with drink with the modestly bitter/drying finish. Never overly aggressive. Very unique hop profile from the ADHA 527. Great mix of juicy/dank hop complexity; balancing malt backbone, with no residual sweetness. A very enjoyable offering, and great experimental hop showcase.
