22oz bottle poured into a snifter
2017 Vintage

A- pours black in color with a one finger creamy khaki head that has good retention

S- huge green pepper bite coming from the coffee, it almost smells like it has jalepeno in it. Undertones herbal and earthy espresso, chocolate and charred malt

T- creamy chocolate and charred malt, followed by a bold coffee note that gives a strong green pepper flavor that follows the nose, along with some herbal espresso notes. The finish gives chocolate, char and more green coffee

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that continues into the finish

Two year old bottle. Probably would have been better to rate fresher. Dark, minimal tan frothy head. Smell is slightly malty with a roasty coffee underneath. Taste is roasty dark malt with a bit of bitter coffee presence and some dark fruity, kind of jammy tang on the back end. The chocolate, vanilla, anise, and other flavors and spices others got (according to their reviews) are just hiding out underneath it all for me. Definite lighter body for an RIS, mouth watering, kind of smooth and velvety. For an 11 percent abv, I have to ask where the alcohol is, which isn’t a bad thing. I’ve let it warm slightly (tough to do when drinking it outside in 20 degree weather), but I’m not getting a thick or creamy feel from this at all. I don’t know if age has hurt or helped this beer. It’s not bad, it’s got plenty of flavor, and it’s pleasant to drink, but I’m thinking I may have let it age too long.

Note-after letting it warm, there’s a bit more spice and sweetness it, definitely thicker and bigger bodied, almost syrupy.

Bottled 8/31/17; drank 9/25/17 @ the Yarchives.

Black appearance.

A rough pour yielded a huge, noisy tan head; nice lace.

Milk chocolate, dark roast coffee bean & faint pepper heat notes in the nose.

Thick, creamy mouthfeel.

Milk chocolate & dark roast coffee flavors up front; caramel & faint pepper heat notes on the finish. No booze heat.

An easy to drink, rich coffee stout; a bit too dark but overall nice.
