Stepping out of their hoppy comfort zone, the three floyds reach across to the music aisle and collaborate with Exodus for a fruity, spicy and winey ale that'll have us all doing the toxic waltz before we know it.

Toxic Maltz rolls onto the nose with a bready sweet confectioner's base and a broad citrus scent that bridges orange, lemon and subtle grapefruit. Leading with pear, the pale golden ale jumps into a taste of angel food cake, lemon drop candy, key lime and and a bold taste of spiced pears once more.

As the flavors unfold, the citrus taste opens up to aspects of melon, tropical fruit and mild apricot. Balanced with white pepper, clove, light vanilla and a kiss of cumin, the lingering sweetness and fruit are offset beautifully as the ale begins to dry. Gaining steam, the spices lead toward a hoppy taste that remains floral, spicy and winey despite a hint of detergents that pull from the finish.

Medium full and trending dry like white wine in finish, the beer soon trails with a spicy and moderately bitter after palate of hops and natural yeast spices; and a banana and clove medley that takes the mind to German hefeweizen. Toxic Maltz is likely Three Floyds most authentic Belgian style beer.

22 ounce bottle, stamp on the label is a bit smudged but it looks like it says bottled on 2/6/17. Served in a tulip, the beer pours a hazy dark gold/orange color with about an inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like apricots, citrus zest, pears, cloves, bready malt and some sweet spiciness. Taste is similar to the aroma, it tastes like bready malt, pear, apricot, grassy herbalness, sweet and peppery spice, bubblegum and bananas. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's smooth and easy to drink with a good amount of soft carbonation. This was a pleasant surprise, I was expecting a hopped up brew but this was more of a straight forward Belgian Strong Ale. Definitely worth picking up! $11.99 a bomber.

Pours a deep amber color with a very large off white head. The head lingers a bit, but leaves a lot ot lacing on the sides of the glass as it dissipates.

Nice fruity smell to it. Seems to be apricot, apple, and pineapple. There is a bit of lingering pepper as well.

Tastes a lot like it smells, lot of fruit, pear, apple, apricot. There is also a good amount of Belgian funk, and just a hint of hops at the finish.

Smooth and solid, feels right on for the style.

Pretty good beer, but comes across as more of a triple to me, due to the fruit flavors. They nailed the Belgian character pretty well, although the funk is a bit strong. As a triple, it is a pretty good one, better than many other US ones I have tried. Definitely worth a try if you like Belgian style beers.

Look: Amber and bubbly with a nice looking white head.

Smell: Belgian yeast characteristics dominate the smell.

Taste: Tastes like a saison, the 9.2% ABV is not noticeable at all.

Feel: Crisp, dry, and effervescent.

Tastes great and a little too easy to drink, this beer could have me doing the toxic waltz if I had several of them!

Thin head, just a light white dusting across the surface with a few thin accompanying lacing streaks. Dark golden color to the liquid with a surprising amount of fat bubbles rising throughout, hard to imagine they do not translate into anything meaningful on the surface. The nose is full-on yeast and lees, pumpernickel bread, orange marmalade, lilacs and peppercorns, the apricot paste and poached peach scents fight for any territory they gain, there is a vegetal funk to it on the edges which can distract. Full-bodied and here you feel the carbonation giving it a heavy churn as well as rougher texture, drying and sandpapery. No lack of yeast, banana, clove and pepper, true to the spirit of things. Here too the fruitiness plays a second fiddle, pineapple, apricot, pear to apple. The pink grapefruit to orange citrus rich if sour. Floral and more piney than one normally gets in these brews. At times you’d likely consider it a saison. The more you sip the more it becomes heavy to a fault and finishing a bomber becomes a chore. Still, the verve and power is there and that’s the main thing you expect.

22 ounce bottle into signature teku glass, bottled on 2/6/2017. Pours hazy deep golden amber/light orange color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big lemon, orange, peach, pear, apricot, apple, white wine, peppercorn, clove, banana, light bubblegum, honey, candi sugar, cracker, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big lemon, orange, peach, pear, apricot, apple, white wine, peppercorn, clove, banana, light bubblegum, honey, candi sugar, cracker, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate yeast spiciness and herbal/grassy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, orange, peach, pear, apricot, apple, white wine, peppercorn, clove, banana, honey, candi sugar, cracker, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitter/spiciness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth and moderately bready/grainy/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Mild increasing warmth of 9.2% after the finish. Overall this is an awesome Belgian strong pale ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, pale malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to sip on for the big ABV. Wonderful yeast complexity and malt balance, without being too sweet or heavy feeling for the style. A really enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Three Floyds pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a somewhat hazy amber orange. Moderate amount of bubbles and about a finger of off white head that settles into a thin creamy patch.

Smell: A fruity and spicy Belgian style aroma with a scent of dried fruit and yeast spice. Belgian yeast with some pepper, clove, and farmhouse funk. Malt scent of grains, biscuit, and cracker. Fruit scent of bananas, apple, pear, orange, and lemon. Sweet scent of bubblegum and candied sugar. Also some hints of floral and grassy hops. A very good Belgian aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a spicy and fruity Belgian style taste with notes of fruit and Belgian style spices. Belgian yeast notes of clove, peppers, and farmhouse funk. Malt notes of grains, straw, biscuit, caramel, and cracker. Dried fruit notes of bananas, pear, apple, orange, and lemon. Sweet taste of bubblegum and candied sugar. Earthy hop notes of grass. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, juicy, and pretty smooth with minimal heat.

Overall: A really good take on a Belgian style Ale. Very nice spice and fruit flavor. Really cool name and label for a legendary thrash metal band.
