Poured into a 3F Teku glass

A) Golden hay color, cloudy, thick 3 finger head.

S) Banana, gum, clove, German Hefe yeast

T) Same as smell, wheat maybe unmalted wheat aftertaste. Very good

M) low carbonation, thick, and coating.

O) 3Fs did well on this German style. Very good Hefe.

Bottle pour at Woodshop 8 held at The Hermosillo in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy bone head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, wheat, yeast, spice, and banana aromas. Taste is much the same with wheat, caramel, and banana flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that iis tasty and is s a solid American take on the style.

Bottle poured into nonic glass.

A: 3.5 Pours bright golden with 1 finger of thin head that reduces very quickly and leaves no lacing. More clear than I had anticipated for the style.
S: 4.0 Clove, bubble gum, coriander, banana.
T: 3.75 same as smell. Nothing takes a strong lead leaving this pretty fairly balaced.
M: 4.0 Carbed well, smooth.
O: 3.75 I was able to try this at the brewpub, and I have to say it was much better on tap.

As Three Floyds Brewery set aside their hoppy ways to showcase their talents in the Weissbier world. Despite its light hop character, the brewers pour a plethora of complex taste into the wheat ale and does so with impeccable balance.

Dark gold in color, the firmly cloudy ale slowly releases a foamy blanket that's part of froth and part of fizz. Surly carbonation is nearly champagne-like as the head dissipates into a delicate creme of foam with lightly spotted lace. I'm somewhat surprised at the ale's struggle to form, retain and lace with its foam character.

Its balanced nose is equal parts banana, clove, bubblegum, wheat, apple, lemon, bread, vanilla and mint. There's so much variance in its nose, but the intensity is just slight of what's expected. Still, the ale projects a highly appetizing scent with only the slight herbal presence of hops.

Its leading sweetness is bready, doughy and yeasty with somewhat of a sprinkle of powdered sugar for a sugar cookie-type of culmination. Its whole wheat taste is the perfect vehicle to reel in the fruitiness of banana, lemon and green apple. The counterpart to fruit introduces with clove, white pepper, sulfur, mint and herbal tea leaves for a chai-like balance. Finishing with the oddly compelling taste of Juicy Fruit bubblegum and vanilla, the beer is soft and spicy through its final few drinks.

Light in body, the beer's creamy, dextrin-richness is given a lift from its strong effervescence that provides a light prickle as the bubbles explode off of the tongue. There's a moment in the middle taste after the carbonation subsides but before the dryness sets in where the beer's true residual malt sweetness is felt and applies a stickiness to the palate. But that's short lived as the minty dryness and peppery warmth assists the evaporation cooling effect from alcohol for a complex final palate sensation.

While Drunk Monk is certainly a fantastic Weissbier, a higher level of dryness while a better projected level of intensity of its overall flavor would get it closer to the likes of Weihenstephaner and Live Oak.

A- pours golden orange with a single finger white head
S- lots of bananna, some lemon, clove, I get the vanilla as well
T- starts with fruity bananna, and lots of it, some sweet spices, belgian yeast flavors, nice subtle hop presence, a little lemon, a little strawberry, some earthy straw flavors, very well balanced.
M- nice amount of carbonation, fairly light
O- this is one of my favorite styles, and this was very very good. Refreshing, fruity, slightly dry, very well balanced with a pleasant hop caricature as well. So glad I got to try this

Had a 22 oz bottle, poured in an imperial pint glass. Very cloudy with about a one inch head. Tastes like a traditional Hefe but with a giant banana taste. Refreshing and awesome. One of the best Hefe's I've ever had. 3 Floyds don't get enough credit for the more 'normal' styles they brew(calumet queen is an excellent kolsch), this is world class.

Pours a clear copper with a soapy head. My one nick on the appearance was that despite a vigorous pour, the head never built up and what was there dissipated almost immediately. It doesnt taste flat but has the appearance that it is.

Aromas are wonderful with vanilla, banana, clove, and a hint of mustiness.

The aromas set a perfect stage for the flavors. A traditionalist would criticize that this beer is too pronounced. The banana and vanilla are like hops to a DIPA. I LOVE this, but it is very forward with smacks of juicy fruit bubble gum and a tinge of clove.

Thin to medium in body with a mild carbonation prickling across the tongue.

A tasty hefe, one that even the weakest taste buds could appreciate. A solid, yet expectedly overdone 3Floyds version of a traditional style. I expect nothing less from these guys.

S - Tons of banana and spice.

T - Tons and tons of banana, some Belgian spices. Very fruity.

D - Medium body with lower carbonation.

O - Fruit heavy Hefe. Nice and fruity.

650ml bottle poured into a Three Floyds' blue pint glass.

The beer pours a hazy copper color, hues of orange, light amber with a soft white head that dissipates quickly and leaves no trace film or lace behind. The aroma is of clove, yeasty banana, orange rind, sticky malt and a little saltiness, fairly standard for a hefe, but nothing earth shattering. The flavors are right on queue, clove and banana are balanced nicely, but don't really burst onto the tongue. Sweet malt, light saltiness and a bit of citrusy hop comes out as well, but there is a bit of cohesion that is lacking. The body is nice, coats the mouth really nicely, carbonation is on the lower end, extremely smooth and rich that finishes with a great creamy touch.

Verdict: A nice hefeweizen from Three Floyds, one of their most conforming beers I've tried, nothing too weird or "not normal" about this one. It's a bit bland and uninspiring compared to many of their beers, but it's quite refreshing.

Appearance: Pours with a creamy thick head at about two fingers and subsided to half a finger while drinking. Average carbonation active in glass for a hefe. Murky dark orange brown color. Lacing crept down the glass with each drink.

Smell: Cloves, leafy greens, and prairie grass definitely pop right out of the glass. Buttery yeast body with some exotic spices. This aroma is very bright and potent. Smells very good but seems to lack elite depth.

Taste: Bananas and a medium bodied wheat presence. Straw and the prairie grass burst though here as well. Fruity tones of oranges, mangos, and kiwis dance around on the palate. Very tasty but again seems to lack a little bit in depth.

Mouthfeel: Low carbonation felt on the palate. Creamy and rich.

Overall: A nice American hefe but like I said in my review, could use a little more depth overall. Lingering tastes are very pleasant and the mouthfeel is light and refreshing.

Drunk Monk is a terrible name, but this is certainly a good, fresh hefeweizen, though a bit less expressive and complex than many German imports, though quite ahead of most US attempts at the style. As a reference, this reminds me a bit of a blend between Schneider Gruunes and Original in flavor and aroma: richly wheat bread-like, with strong banana and bubblegum, slightly less phenol presence. Glad I was able to try this beer, but primarily because it's been a long sought-after, highly rated hefeweizen and that it's from Three Floyds. At $8 per 650ml bottle, it's much more effective to pick up three Weihenstephaner weizens (and not deal with traffic to the brewery and/or the wait in line to pick up bottles). If Three Floyds released this as an affordable 6-pack, though, it would be difficult to pass up.

Pours a 3cm tall head of foam, consisting of medium to large-sized bubbles that are white to off-white in color, with retention length of slightly over one minute, well below average for the style. The foam settles to a thin ring around the perimeter of the glass, also rather lackluster for what is normally an exceptionally good-looking style of beer. Lacing is surprisingly negligible, with only a few spots clinging to the sides of the glass. Body is a dirty golden orange color, with light bringing out slightly brighter golden orange-yellow hues. Beer is opaque from suspended yeast sediment, though carbonation can be seen at the top of the body, low in number and activity.

Aroma of Bavarian yeast with hearty, heavy, bread-like and slightly grainy wheat malt, lesser, but modestly present overripe banana mash, and very faint band-aid like phenols and bubblegum scents. Darker and grainier than I thought this would be, but still quite pleasant.

Flavor of fairly well-balanced wheat bread, banana ester, with nutmeg and band-aid phenols: quite good and easily drinkable. Taste opens with substantially sweet, fairly rich wheat malt, overripe banana flavors (esters), bubblegum, slightly sharp nutmeg-like phenols, and mild vanilla and musty and mushroom-like yeast on the front of the palate. Mid-palate of dense, bread-like wheat malt with modest graininess, heavy flavor of overripe bananas, nutmeg and band-aid phenols, balanced sweetness and vanilla. Back of palate is rich with hearty wheat bread flavor, slightly musty yeast, banana esters, spicy clove and nutmeg-like phenols, and bubblegum. Aftertaste is sweet, perhaps overly so, a bit cloying, with the overripe banana ester and bubblegum being in the forefront of the flavor, with wheat bread and phenols tucked into the back.

Beer is medium-light to medium in body, with carbonation of medium-low intensity, resulting in a rather flat, lightly foamy and watery mouthfeel that does little to accentuate the flavors and aromas of the beer. Closes dryly, but with substantial stickiness clinging to the lips and palate.

Thanks for two bombers of this, Todd! Apparently only $8 at the brewery, which is far less than they usually retail for. Poured out of a 22oz bomber into a shaker pint glass.

Pours a pretty typical color for a hefeweizen, consisting of a cloudy, amber pale tone, with cloudier hues at the center to the point where it's barely transparent. The head at first is, when poured aggressively, a frothy, sticky looking white entity topping the top of the glass. Too bad it dies down so quickly - I tested this with different glasses, and no matter what the shape was, or how clean they were, I got the same results of the head vanishing completely and the carbonation spontaneously vanishing so rapidly that it's almost hysterical. The color is spot on, but I have to dock points here on the subject its carbonation issues. Something tells me this is less of a problem when consumed on tap.

Smells terrific - bananas, slightly buttery vanilla, lots of clove, and light notes of bubble gum are all featured here. There's definitely more to it than that, ranging from the crisp, wheat bready texture, lemon rinds, grassiness, and some other funky fruity elements from the yeast at hand. The flavors are all quite balanced and do not battle one another as is the case of so many American takes on the style. In terms of delivering the richness of flavors, breadiness from the yeast, and crispness from the grains, this is more enjoyable to me than many *German* offerings! Excellent stuff - probably the highlight of the beer.

The flavor and mouthfeel don't reach that same level of quality, but it's overall very enjoyable. At the front of the tongue, there's vivid notes of caramelized bananas, a bit of yeasty funkiness, as well as spicy clove, candied sugar, and very light vanilla. In spite of its creamy, bready texture, it's stupidly easy to drink. The flavor is definitely refreshing, crisp, and fruity - what's up with the carbonation, though? It dies unbelievably fast to begin with, and while it doesn't become completely flat, it leaves behind a spritz-y sensation that is mildly uncomfortable, as well as a grainy raspy sensation that detracts from the initial creaminess. Also, the finalizing pours were very yeasty - almost distractingly so. It was an easy drink, but I think bottling interfered with some key aspects within this beer.

A great hefeweizen offering in terms of aroma (couldn't find any flaws) and flavor, but something needs to be addressed about the carbonation problem, as both bottles I opened displayed the same issues of near-flatness. Otherwise, this is one of the best takes on the style I've had in this country, and I would love to try it on tap sometime.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Very hazy orange yellow. Not much of a head. Slight white collar.

Smell - Bananas and clove. Grainy. Phenolic. Standard hefe aroma.

Taste - Just like the aroma, lots of banana and clove. Spicy more than bananas. Grainy right up front, but gets a little more slick and phenolic in the finish. Lots of banana in the back. Some vanilla, maybe?

Mouthfeel - Starts off thin, but feels thicker into the drink. Well carbonated. Slightly metallic in the finish.

Overall - I'm not a hefe drinker, but this is decent.

Pours murky orange brown with a 1 finger white head you can not see through this beer.

Nose has huge sweet banana and vanilla notes, reminds me of candy similar to runts. Not a whole lot of spicy notes but some minor clove that is mostly dominated by banana. Malt is very mild and has a sweet Carmel note to it.

Some banana but more clove comes out in the taste then was present in the smell. A slight Belgian funk keeps this brew from being too sweet. A slight sweet grainy malt is also detectable along with subtle hints of vanilla.

Mouthfeel is decent, carbonation is slightly low for my liking. Mouthfeel is a little thick for a hefe and there is a very slight dry feel from the Belgian yeast.

At Three Floyd's Brewpub

A - Hazy light amber, poured with medium white head, persistent ring around glass, soapy lacing throughout

S - Crazy amount of Bananas upfront and moderate Clove on the front, but mediun clove dominates the finish

T - Medium banana at first (I was expecting more from the nose) and balanced well by the clove. Finishes very clean with moderate amounts of both banana and clove. In the middle the banana really shines through and slight drys the mouth before both flavors meld together.

M - Medium Body, Medium Cabination, clean finish

O - Very solid, clean and brewed to style very well. For a Three Floyd's beer I was amazed that the hops never came through in the nose or while tasting.

After having a grower of Live Oak shipped to me this week and this beer randomly dropping, I had to do a taste off. I prefer Live Oak, but wouldn't hesitate to order this on a hot summer day. After reading many comments comparing the two for me it is no question, Live Oak is my preferred Hefeweizen.

A - thick yellow cloudy. The cloudiest hefe I've ever seen. Thick white head and amazing lacing.

S - everything you want in a hefe. Loads of fruit and citrus. Good German hop.

T - unlike any other hefe. Smoothest I've ever had. So fruity but not that bitter hop after taste you usually get.

M - medium bodied and light carbonation.

O - the best hefe I've had. Highly reccomend.

On-tap at Three Floyds. Served in a weizen glass.

A - A finger of white foam settles to a thick cap, leaving sheets of lace. Turbid, unfiltered dark apricot body.

S - Nice banana, clove, malted wheat, light lemon citrus charater, and that distinctive weizen yeast flavor.

T - Crisp unmalted wheat, bread and yeast, with less banana sweetness and clove character.

M - Pleasant moderate carbonation, grainy texture, medium body, and a very dry and crisp finish.

D - A very enjoyable hefeweizen that is competitive with the best I've had from Germany. I easily finished the 22oz glass and would love for Three Floyds to make this more often - they should have bottled this one instead of Jinx Proof.

A- banana yellow, but a brown color peeks through. like a browned banana. White fluffy head. very nice.

S- clove banana. Hops. malts.

T- tastes bready but a moist bread. A banana flavor which is super nice. Cloves are present at the party too. A subtle hop bite finishes the mouthfull.

M- light to medium bodied. really feels nice in the mouth. hard to describe.

O- I hope many more people can enjoy this beer. It would be the quintessential summer beer for me if it was bottled

A - Pours an orangish golden color into Wiesse glass with a white head. The head forms a ring around the glass and remains as a thin layer on the top. There's some lacing that sticks around.

S - Banana bread is the dominating smell here. Some yeast musty notes, but mostly bananas.

T - Slight bitterness, bananas, yeast and a small amount of citrus bite as well.

M - Light bodied but a very full mouthfeel, which is cool. Light carbonation but fits right in for the style.

D - A very sessionable beer, no doubt about it. Probably the best hefe I've had to date. Looking forward to trying the Live Oak for comparison.

On-tap at the Clark Street Ale House. Big thanks to Victoria for this round. Awesome yeast funk and they really nailed the look. Quite dry in the taste. Quality brew, I had a few. They did not blew. Recommended. I can't say they nailed the style, but it is an acceptable interpretation. We finished the last of what they had at Clark St., and it's not clear if they will have more.

Pours a beautiful deep earthy copper with womderful head a good lacing. Deep wheat scent with a wonderful banana clove aroma and a slight pepperiness. Wonderfully deep thick wheat flavor with great banana tones and a nice spice hit at the end. Deep, thick, hearty, and satisfying.

Appearance: Drunk Monk 0pours a hazy faded golden color, with a small white head, which fades rather quickly to a ring on the edge of the glass. Light lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell: Banana, clove, and wheat are all present. Other spices and floral hops provide the support.

Taste: Although the banana flavors are quite strong, this is actually somewhat tame for FFF. Maybe I was just in the mood for something stronger. It starts out moderately sweet, with lots of banana, clove, and spice. A kick of bubblegum in the middle, finished out by light citrus but mostly floral hops.

Mouthfeel: The feel is sticky sweet, and moderately carbonated. Medium body.

Drinkability: My ratings may be weighed down by my exceptionally high expectations for Three Floyd's, but to me this was a decent, not a great beer.

Poured into a pint glass, color is a very hazy orange/yellow with a bubbly white head that settles to the edge. Smell is oranges, vanilla, cream soda, a hint of spicy cloves and malted wheat. Taste is wheat up front with a nice sweet orange flavor, followed by spicy hops, yeast, bananas, and cloves with a hint of lemon in the finish. Medium body and light carbonation. This beer is incredibly drinkable, if it was available in 6 packs it would constantly be in my fridge. It seems that when FFF does a traditional style beer they nail it. I would put this hefe up against some of the top Germans.

Appearace -- Pours a hazy honey with a finger of creamy white head.

Smell -- Husky grain, cream of wheat, banana and bubblegum, earthy yeast.

Taste -- Lots of hefe yeast flavor, predominantly banana and bubblegum, though clove becomes much more pronounced than in the nose. Husky malt, gentle powdered sugar sweetness, and cracked wheat.

Mouthfeel -- Medium-full in body with lively but gentle carbonation. Creamy would be accurate.

Drinkability -- While I'm not sure it stacks up to the versions of the Fatherland, it's still quite good. Very estery, very fruity and creamy. Applicant must love banana. Would *LOVE* to do a compare-contrast with Live Oak. Just sayin'...

I was warned this wouldn't be necessarily representative of the beer's true nature, but I thought it was pretty good regardless. It pours a slightly hazed pale straw topped by a finger of white froth. The nose comprises banana, cinnamon, green apple, and clove. The taste holds notes of coriander, lemon, bananas, and nutmeg. The body is light, with a light carbonation and a rather refreshing feel. Overall, even if this was near the end of the keg, it was pretty dern tasty and enjoyable. Hopefully I can get some more later...
