Employing some of the most spicy, fruity, herbal and floral hops that the great lands provide, the beer makers at Three Floryds also gravitate toward corn sweetness and agave sugars to fuel their IPA that boasts a south of the boarder kind of taste.

Brightly hued with an amber hazy glow, the beer's sprite carbonation fuels a perfumy scent of citrus, herb, grass and hemp in a luscious not-so-subtle bouquet. Its taste is succulent with honey, light caramel and those agave fruity, floral, herbal flavors to start.

And to continue, the sweetness mellows out and the hops creep in and slowly overcome the malts with a broad array of fruit: citrusy with under ripened orange, lime and white grapefruit but then following with tropical passionfruit and kiwi and trailing with guava and agave for a green tea presence to finish. Bitter, spicy and herbal, the beer trails with elements of sassafras, juniper and spruce.

Medium full in body, the beer labors the palate with the sticky resins of hops and the lingering sweetness of malt for a tandem of bittersweetness that rewards and taxes the senses. A long aftertaste of citrus, tequila and herb allows the ale to extend well after the sweetness subsides.

On tap at Northdown. Clear pale orange. Smells of corn, citrus, honey, which I guess is the agave, but I’m just not that familiar, and alcohol. Tastes of corn, citrus, sweetness that again reminds me of honey. Sweet back end, but dries out. Medium heavy. Not what I expected. The corn isn’t bad. Interesting.

Overly aggressive head that fills half the pint glass, albeit it burns off very quickly being comprised all but entirely of larger bubbles, conversely though the lacing forms big blotches which refuse to budge. The liquid is filmy and seems to have a fine sediment mixed in throughout, light rust water color, no beads but one big swarm of active bubbles. Huge burst of corn syrup at first in the nose, honey and caramel, still it has that Three Floyds musky hops thing going on, like getting hit in the head with a sock full of wet hops, tangerine to lime citrus, pork rinds, pine resin, apricot, papaya, cantaloupe fruit scents, nothing subtle about it seems to sneer at harmonious integration. Full-bodied, expansive mouth feel, juicy and wet. Gentle carbonation, background noise. Here the agave strides to the fore with lime juice and it can taste like a beer chaser with the aftertaste of tequila. Can be floral at times, on the whole sour rather than say the bitterness of hops. The sugariness of the citrus and peach, apricot, mango fruit salves most wounds. Its off center nature is attractive and it is easy to quaff. More Aztec style than IPA but that’s a popular base to work off of these days.

Bought for $12.99 in Lake Delton. Definitely a malty agave bomb. Proof is lower than I like in a DIPA, but it is an interesting idea from the lads at 3F. Mildly sweet rather than bitter.

Look - golden slight orange thick non transparent slight lacing
Smell - tropical fruit like mango but also corn silk
Taste - mango rolled up in a corn tortilla, pretty sweet and not to bitter
Feel - pretty thick syrup with a light carb
Overall - if Mexicans stopped brewing does equies and carona and switched this life would be good.

A - Pours an almost clear golden color with 1/2" head that settles to a cap.
S - Aroma is light, grassy, lemon.
T - Sweetness hits you on the front end with some citrus fruit. Very nice bitter and spicy finish.
M - Average carbonation and mouth feel.
O - I really like the differences in this DIPA. I love the finish. Count me in for more.

Description: A cloudy orange/yellow appearance that reminds me of a mimosa. Only a small amount of white head but it lingers for a while. Aroma is fruity and tropical with melon, citrus and grapefruit predominating. The taste on this one is a little 'sneaky' for lack of a better term. It didn't really mimic the smell and was much more resinous than sweet; definitely more bitter than the aroma would suggest. There's also an element of heat that, while I could never really taste going down, was certainly present on the throat going down. Body and feel are both pretty standard for an IPA, i.e., "medium".

Suggested food pairing: French fries with Ninja Squirrel Sriracha Hot Sauce. I'm making this very specific suggestion because that's what was eating as I drank this, and it was delicious.

If you like this beer then you should also try: Hop Marauder

Overall: 4.25 (This beer is good and I would likely drink it again) Lately I've been kvetching about how there are so many IPAs available that it's difficult for one to stand out or distinguish itself from another. Not so with this one. Well balanced and complex with some non-standard elements (heat) gave this beer a relatively distinct character. It'd be nice if this was available more regularly but since it isn't, get it while you can.
