Notes / Commercial Description:
This beer is brewed during the hop harvest with a portion of unkilned or “wet” hops fresh off the vine. Apricot in color, Broo Doo’s nose has dominant orange, pine sap and floral notes, balanced by a glazed nut and toffee malt body. This celebration of the hop harvest has intense tropical fruit, citrus and spicy accents that showcase the complexity of the hops we all love.

BOTTLE: 1 pint 6 fl oz. Brown glass. Colourful label art. Branded pink & green pry-off crown cap.

Purchased at 3 Floyds a few days ago. Served cold into a pilsner glass. Expectations are high given the wet hopping and 3 Floyds' high reputation.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: One finger wide. White colour. Nice frothiness and creaminess. Good overall even consistency. Decent complexion. Retention is nie - about 4-5 minutes. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.

BODY: Cloudy copper of nice vibrance. No yeast is visible within. Translucent but nontransparent.

It's a nice look for an IPA, but isn't groundbreaking. I'm looking forward to trying it.

AROMA: Dank hop presence: pine, resins, hop oils, floral notes, orange peel, melon, tangerine, and spicy hops. Caramalt, pale malts, and 3 Floyds' usual syrupy cotton candy sweetness.

The hoppy notes aren't as vivid or expressive as you'd hope for in a wet hop IPA, but there's plenty of diversity to the hop profile. This aroma, while of below average intensity, suggests a nicely complex IPA with plenty of flavour.

I find no overt yeast notes, off-notes, or booze.

TASTE: Hop bitterness is well balanced by the caramalt, pale malt, and syrupy candied sweetness in the malt backbone. Hop notes are diverse, with floral character, piney notes, resins, mild oils, tangerine, melon, rind, and spice.

It's balanced, yes, but it honestly isn't that hoppy to begin with. The hop notes - whilst impressively diverse - aren't as vivid, fresh, expressive, or deep as you'd expect in a world-class wet hop ale. There isn't much here for the discerning drinker in terms of subtlety and nuance, but I do like it, and it's well built for what it is. It's just not the hop bomb 3 Floyds would have us believe.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, lightly oily, somewhat refreshing, medium-bodied, and aptly thick and hefty on the palate, with a good overall presence and presentation of flavour. Clean and well-carbonated. Doesn't accentuate specific notes or elevate the beer as a whole, but it complements the taste decently.

OVERALL: Drinkable and enjoyable, but not world-class. I'd buy it again if it were offered in 6-packs, but at this price point in bomber format - no thanks. Well worth trying, and enjoyable as an IPA, but further intricacy - and frankly, hop presence - is needed to elevate this into a style paragon.

High B

12/23/16 impressions:

Briefer flavour duration than I remembered. Decent hop profile. I remembered it better.

Dry and scratchy on the palate.

Too much sweetness is trying to compensate for the hop bitterness.

On tap at Stone Tap in Hudson, Wisconsin. 12 oz. pour in a shaker glass.

Appearance: Color is a bright amber orange. Moderate amount of bubbles and a solid finger of off white head which settles into a thin creamy patch.

Smell: A juicy and earthy hop forward aroma with a scent of citrus fruit and pine. Big citrus hop scent of grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, tangerine, passion fruit, mango, and pineapple. Earthy and floral hop scent of pine resin and grass. Malt hints of caramel and cracker along with yeast. A very good juicy aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a very juicy and earthy hop driven taste with notes of citrus fruit and pine. Upfront citrus hop notes of orange peel, grapefruit, mango, lemon, tangerine, and passion fruit along with some pineapple. Earthy hop notes of pine resin and grass. Background malt notes of caramel, cracker, and grains with some yeast. A great juicy taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Juicy, oily, and drying.

Overall: A great Fresh Hop IPA. Big citrus fruit and pine hop flavor.

A-Pours a clear golden amber with a three finger, pearl colored head that sticks around for awhile.

S-Smells of mostly mango, with some pine and orange with a little bit of caramel.

T-Piny and orange upfront with a bit of caramel malt and finishes with a slight bitterness.

M-Medium bodied with low to medium carbonation and smooth, crisp mouthfeel.

D-Really easy drinking with a great nose and a pretty solid flavor profile.

Bottled 9-25-14

A - Clean amber body with bright white ~2" head, head lingers for a long time.

S - Loaded with citrus, pine, and sweet malt.

M/T - Very clean hop flavors with nice balance and good finish.

O - A very good and easy drinking Harvest Ale. I would like to taste this side by side with Sierra Nevada's Harvest Ale. Not sure who would come out on top. Should be no surprise that 3 Floyds makes a good wet hopped pale ale. Prost!

Reviewed from notes.

Pours an orange/amber with a nice head and good lacing.

Smell is all fresh hops.

Taste is strong hops, quite bitter, very fresh, fruity, and flowery.

Mouthfeel is good, resiny to go with the hops.

Drinkability is good, but this is a very bitter beer.

Pours a very clear golden yellow with white lacing on the edges.
Strong Amarillo hop aromas coming out of the pour, grapefruit, citrus and lemon along with pale malt aromas.

Taste of amarillo, some earthy grass bitterness with grapefruit , citrus and orange rind. I also get a slight hint of peach in here which is nice. The one flavor I am not big on in this is the aftertaste which is very similar to earth. I guess with a harvest ale this is acceptable, I just think it could be a little more rounded out. Either way, I am definitely reminded of Alpha King and Gumballhead under a different label. Every time I blink I feel Three floyds comes out with another beer although somewhat similar to many of their other beers. Either way, cannot complain as most are very good. This one almost fits into that category, just something keeping it within arms reach of very good... maybe a little too dry on the finish.

Light mouthfeel and a medium carbonation, very drinkable, never would have guessed it weighs in at 7.0.

Bomber from 9.25.14, enjoyed out of a teku

A: Slightly hazy shade of brassy orange

S: Light melon musk; resin and pine; candied or carmelized citrus peel

T: Slightly syrupy pine, orange peel, and resin. There's a nice spicy bite on the finish. Aftertaste is pretty bitter.

M: Sticky, syrupy, dry, and lightly vinous.

O: An enjoyable beer that didn't really stand out for me. I liked it a lot last year, but now I think it can't compete with Founders Harvest Ale.

A: Poured from a 22oz bomber. Light orange color with ample 1 to 1.5 finger head

S: copious amounts of apple-like hop aroma.

T: medium sweetness with hops all across the tastebuds that taste pretty consistent through the swallow.

M: medium bodied with an oily resinous mouthfeel. Plenty of carbonation.

O: excellent harvest ale. One of the best harvest ales on the market IMO. Will def. seek this out again the next time I'm in Indiana (probably never).
