Appearance - The beer was viciously black in color with a dark tan head crowning the pour.

Smell - The nose was deeply boozy with sweet chocolate notes contrasting.

Taste - Dark rye notes contrast balance with the sweetness. Chocolate, molasses, and tobacco notes are all very present. The overall profile was not overly sweet, so there was a nice balance. It was less sweet than other Dark Lord variants.

Mouthfeel - As always, it was viciously thick.

Overall - Clearly, it is not the best of the variants, but it was nice and not over done.

2018 vintage; drank 6/22/19 @ Golgi Apparatus.

The spicy notes from the rye & the sweet notes from the base beer forged an uneasy, but palatable alliance; this wasn't a home-run but it was pretty good.

Not worth chasing down, but if it comes your way, it's worth a quaff.

I felt like this was a sleeper at Dark Lord Day 2018 - I found myself in line for this beer, not really knowing hour, drunkenly sharing bottles like crazy. The world sort of came back in to focus when I got my beer though - good lord is there a lot of rye and barrel in this beer. When fresh, it was slightly hot, but with loads of chocolate and barrel. Love that rye spice. It was nutso out of the gate.

A little age hasn't hurt this beer at all either. I drank it again in February of 2019 - while the rye has mellowed a bit, the chocolate is still warm and rich. The beer is aging well and still tasting fantastic.

Probably my favorite of the Dark Lord Variants of all time (including Handjee, FVM, Chemtrail, etc.).

Very viscious with mininal to no foam upon pour. Extremely dark black/brown color. Taste is quite sweet, with the noticeable chocolatey-fudgy flavor-texture combo going on. Rye and barrel presence is definitely there (especially related to Chemtrailmix ‘18 which was had after this, and the barrel in that wasn’t nearly as noticeable). Very thick and very sticky mouthfeel.

A solid beer overall. Sipper all day that I was glad to be able to share among the 3 people. But if I was trying to take this whole bottle down by myself, that would have been difficult with the sweetness.

Bottle courtesy of Katelynn:

AROMA: Fudge, mild heat, cocoa. dark malts.

TASTE: Fudgy and sweet, never revealing the ostensible rye whiskey barrel notes. Tends too desserty, even venturing into cloying territory. I couldn't take down a bottle of this solo. Some gooey malts and barrel char plague the finish.

TEXTURE: Thick, viscous, unrefreshing, sludgy, smooth, wet.

OVERALL: I didn't get Dark Lord and I don't get this. Sludgy fare I wouldn't pay over $15 a bomber for, let alone wait in line for. Hides its ABV well, to give it credit.

Big chocolate, burnt sugar, some charred marshmallow, getting the spicy rye bourbon barrel, not huge but tames the sugary sweetness some. Sticky viscous mouthfeel. Overall, a delicious DL Variant.

Poured into a snifter. An opaque brown as expected with a small tan head. The rye was in my opinion a perfect compliment to the base beer. The spicy booze cut through the sweetness and left me wanting more after each sip. Great "balance" between the two. I loved this beer - the best variant that I have enjoyed.

Viscous obsidian black with a thin but creamy mocha blanket.

Smell is nutty oak with very little spice outside of a hint of pine, all under a heap of dark chocolate.

Taste is still super sweet, but with a kicked up heat, competing for the title of booziest Dark Lord variant ever. There is a hint of rye spice, but not much, as there is far more prune and other dark fruit. As it warms, a hint of marshmallow pops in, but don't get your hopes up, that doesn't stick around.

The heavy body is slick, sticky and dry.

If I'm being honest, I didn't find this to be substantially different from regular BADL. This is weird because I found the rye barrel used for ChemTrailMix 2018 to have made itself known very well, but here it doesn't provide the level of spice or contrast to the sweetness that I was expecting.

750ml bottle, served in a snifter glass at Dark Lord Day. Pours the standard Dark Lord body- big and black, oily, one finger brown head, legs, lacing, all that. Smell is rye, spice, brown sugar, dark chocolate, touch of bitter/burnt coffee, whiskey, slight dark fruit. It's a nice rendition of BADL versus the standard bourbon variant. The rye adds a nice spice to it. Flavour follows; in fact, if you added cinnamon to this, I think you would have Chemtrailmix. Mouthfeel is medium fuller bodied, good carbonation, silky smooth, a bit of spicy rye heat on the finish. Really nice beer, probably going to be a relatively underappreciated variant, including by me.
