Pouring this 2018 (silver wax) bottle into a tulip, this beer pours out a dark and turbid brown. Like a very strong brewed tea. It forms over a finger worth of tightly packed, tingy yellow bubbles to create a crown. Leaves some lacing. Impressive crown for something barrel aged and if it wasn’t for the turbid looks, it would get higher marks. 4.25

The nose comes in with raisins and dark fruit galore. Waves of figs, caramel, leather, tobacco, vanilla and wood character. It overrides a lot of the prominent hop aspect found in the original. I do still detect it slightly, in the form of a light fruit aspect, like apricot, but not as heavily. Absolutely beautiful smell though and I hope this depth is continued. 4.75

With the first taste comes sweetness of caramel and vanilla. There is almost a candy like presence as well, like candied fruit of some kind or even Swedish fish, maybe some grilled pineapple. It could be the light fruit notes I’m picking up in the hops mixing with the sweetness. It then melds into the other depths of the brew with the notes of leather, figs, raisins, black tea. Once again though, absolutely beautiful. I wouldn’t change a thing about this taste right now if I had the power to. 5

The mouthfeel brings a bourbon warmness, like it should. It doesn’t bring too much though and doesn’t burn. Where the original is medium-full bodied, this definitely gets the extra boost it needs to declare full bodied. It doesn’t bring a real pop of carbonation, it goes in and leaves quite the same, however it does work for this. It finishes with a dry, clean oak character. 4.5

Overall, this truly is a world class beer. I tried to judge it fairly and mark it for characters liked and unliked. But it still comes out on top. It’s a different beer completely than the original Behemoth. It still shows those light fruit hops, but takes a lot of the burnt sugars and resiny pine elements away from it. So I can see how some people like one but not the other. But man, am I happy I got to try this. Thanks to my sister for grabbing it on a trip. 4.75

Serving: 750mL bomber poured into a Founder's CBS snifter. 2015 edition with purple wax, bottle 824/1053. This one's a little over a month old.

A: Easily one of the more ugly BA beers I've seen in a long time. This one pours a very murky, dark brown color. Has the look of dirty water or mud. Thin, off-white head rings around the glass. Not very appetizing.

S: Molasses, dark fruits, candied plums, sugar cane, caramel and bourbon. Compared to the base beer, much less hop presence here. Way more dark fruit and molasses from the barrel aging.

T: Dark plums and cherries, toffee, caramel, molasses, vanilla, bourbon-soaked sweet breads. A faint, faint presence of hops in the back of the mouth. Bourbon flavor is nice and smooth, not too boozy.

M: Full-bodied. Minimal carbonation. Some heat on the finish, can really feel the 12.5% in this one, especially as it warms.

O: I recently had the base beer, Behemoth, and just wasn't impressed. I didn't review it, as I was saving this one for more of a comparison type review. I think I was less impressed with Behemoth because I tend to favor more English-style BWs that are malt-forward and rich, and Behemoth is super hoppy and fresh. I found it a bit abrasive. But BA Behemoth really takes the edge off that beer, and turns this into one fine beer. There's still a tiny hint of the hoppy base beer underneath, but for the most part, this is one nice complex beer. Lots of dark fruits and burnt candies. Bourbon textures are really nice. If there's a fault, it's the ugly appearance and the noticeable booziness. This doesn't meet the level of BCBBW at all, but it's a great BA Barleywine from Three Floyds.

Recommendation: Is it worth the price and effort to snag this? Eh, I'm not 100% sure. At the least, it's worth a trade or just seeking out during a bottle share. It's a really good beer, just maybe a tad overpriced for the quality.

Murky brown swamp water in look this beer left a lot to be desired. Weak mouthfeel, lacking in flavors that didn't blend really well. Not a good beer.

Appearance: Hazy, almost muddy orange with thin head that recedes to a collar pretty quickly.

Nose: A blast of fruity hops escape the bottle as soon as it's uncapped. Once in the glass it has a stronger toffee and burnt sugar note, along with nutty, sherry-like oxidation. This is surprisingly oxidized, but in a good way - more sherry than cardboard. Bourbon is present but integrated, and there's a good deal of hoppiness left on the nose, lending a touch of peach and pineapple along with a bit of grassiness that makes me think of old IPA.

Palate: Similar to the nose, this beer has an intriguing mix of oxidation, barrel and hops. Oxidation is front and center, largely nutty and leathery in character with a bit of sherry beneath. Malt sweetness is amplified by the barrel, but it isn't a syrupy beer by any means, and burbon isn't really overt here. Hops contribute a mild bite to the finish and a touch of citrus, primarily pineapple and stonefruit. I'm surprised that the barrel aging hasn't caused the hops to disappear completely, but they're not unwelcome.

Overall: This grew on me quite a bit over the course of my glass. Really interesting stuff.

Boom. Thanks Marcus, this was incredibly generous and is really appreciated. Second bottling with orange wax. A total of 6-7 oz. into a taster on June 15th, 2013.

A - Very murky toffee coloring, absolutely no head, retention, or lacing. Considerable legs though.

S - Bright, refined whiskey barrel, raisins, spicy fig, orange marmalade, and oak shavings.

T - The hops from the base have really relaxed in favor of a balanced barrel attack. Rich dark fruits, deep cocoa, pine cone, and a touch of some lighter tropic fruit blend that accents much more of an English-style base.

M - Moderate carbonation (much higher than it looks), medium body, very dry finish for the style.

D - Significantly better than regular Behemoth. Much like regular Dark Lord, it's bizarre how this transforms inside a barrel.

6th taster - Port's Barrel Blast
2008 Vintage

A - Ruby light grape color - copper. Little to no head from the poor on tap that had a light color...

S - Strong vanilla, bourbon, oak sweetness, smoke warmth, peat

T - Bourbon, vanilla, oak sweetness with a peaty smoky finish. The strong taste makes up for the tricky light color.

M - Little to no carbonation, very smooth, little bit of heat that made it more enjoyable - this went down very smooth

D - Very nice drink - one of my favorites at the event. Vanilla, oak, peat like - reminded me somewhat of all the flavors I like in a scotch, but in a very smooth drinking beer. Very much enjoyed this one...
