On tap at Three Floyds Brewpub, poured into a tulip. This beer poured a total black color with a one-fingered thick tan head that quickly dissolved. Very faint lacing. The aroma of this brew was barnyard yeastiness and some faint roasted malts. The flavor was mildly spicy with some earthy yeast esthers. The mouthfeel was light-bodied with minimal carbonation. A nicely, well balanced Belgian from Three Floyds. It was actually somewhat true to style with a low hop level and good balance, even if it was super dark.

This was a new one on the menu this weekend (7-13-07) at 3F's. A black Belgian-style spiced ale per the menu. Arrives in a tulip glass a nice char black hue with dark brown accents and a thin white head on top. Aroma of roasted malts alongside hints of dark fruits and a Belgian yeast spiciness. Quite nice overall, albeit a bit on the subdued side.

First sip brings the roasted malt upfront followed by a somewhat tart aspect. Dark fruits flavors mix in with a light cocoa undertone. Flows down with some clove and banana spiciness from the yeast. Mellow pine hops are an afterthought. A tasty Belgian inspired black bier to be had here.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a smooth carbonation that lends itself to easy drinking. Lighter tan a porter with a nice crispness. I could see having a few of these in a sitting. Overall, an interesting new brew from the Floyds and one I wouldn't mind having the chance to sample again sometime.

Got this one on tap at the FFF brewpub as i wanted to try something they don't bottle.

The color came out pretty dark black but a really thing head that was gone as soon as I got it. Don't know if this had to do more with the way it was served or the beer it self.

Smelled a lot of orange coming off mixed with the smell of yeast and wheat. Smelled a bit like a hefeweizen but kicked up a notch.

The taste was also a lot of citrus, orange, lemon and even a bit of spice. After awhile thought that it was a bit over bearing. I was not really impressed with this brew especially for a FFF brew as it was just average which seems a failure for them.

The mouth feel was really nice on this one, lots of carbonation that just rolled over the tongue which complemented the spicy, sharp taste of the citrus. Thought that matched really well with the flavors of the beer itself and worked as a complement.

Drinkability was allrite. It was good to have one and I enjoyed but was not really blown away either. Given all of the other choices that they had at the pub, would definitely not go for another.

This was an intriguing beer on the beerlist at the brewpub that i had never heard of so i gave it a shot

appearance: served in a tulip, opaque midnight blue body with a light tan head and light lacing...fairly pretty beer

smell: loads of dark fruits and strongly spiced, dark belgian yeast, chocolate covered cherry...intriguing

taste: this is certainly a different kind of 3F brew meaning it isnt a massive hop bomb...black cherry and dark yeast come through strong, a tad tart, dark chocolate, light alcohol

mouthfeel: mildly tart, smooth

drinkability: good

Brown head with a spicy, dark aroma. Slightly alcoholic.

My initial impression on first sip was Belgian sweet, but the aftertaste was definitely smoky. Carbonation kicked in when it hit my tongue, making it feel very creamy.

Definity not a beer to drink after mowing the lawn. But with pizza, it was perfect.

A: Served a lovely pitch black with a tiny khaki colored head.

S: Aromas of roasted malt, dark fruit, candi sugar, and dark chocolate.

T: Toasted, roasted malt. Lightly spicy with tart fruit (citrus and cherries).

M: Quite tart. More so than I expected.

D: An excellent change of pace for FFF!

It is presented in a tulip glass with a dark brown slightly black hue with a small tan head that collapsed on itself very quickly. The first scents are of fruit and Belgian yeast. As it warmed a little bit I got more spices and a slight malt touch. The taste is mostly dark fruit on the front of my palate, but finishes with a light smokey flavor and cherries. The mouthfeel is very smooth, but I think the carbination is actually rather high and gave the beer a creamy texture. The drinkability is good, but I don't think I would have more than one at a time. This isn't what you would expect from FFF's, but I think it's a good change of pace and am glad to see them offering this.

From a bottle filled from a growler filled at BCTC.

Pours opaque black, with extremely fine bubbles that rose to a head of two inches with a longish pour. The dense head of dark beige fell within three minutes, and revealed a partial skim coat on the surface and some decent webbed-lacework.
Aromatics are heavily spiced with cardamom. A medicinal-menthol tinge comes through the slightly acrid and roasty profile.
A bit of Vics vapor rub amongst roast coffee beans and bakers chocolate.
Mouthfeel is medium, smooth, and creamy.
The pallet is fairly mild, with the spicing not as apparent as the aromatics suggested.
Roasted malt, toasted cocoa nubs, and coffee grounds give way to a blend of citrus zest and spicy phenols.
Finishes with lingering roast and warming spice.
Alcohol is nill, and overall, the brew is more drinkable than when first sampled back in the summer.
Age has improved this beer.
