Just got to Indiana (Bloomington) to visit the law school. Was anxious to try Three Floyds since I had heard so much about them. Holy Moly, this beer is damn good. This beer alone makes the trip from Virginia worth it. Here goes:

A: Lovely. Beer pours a dark, cloudy brown that's rather opaque (a lot darker than most pale ales, in fact). However, the head was massive; incredibly fluffy. Drinking the beer left a ton of lacing on the side as well. You can tell that this is a very well-made beer.

S: Beautiful. Unlike most APA's, you can smell both the hops AND malt. They're very well-balanced against each other, with American hops giving way to a rich caramel malt backbone. Both sweet and bitter at the same time. Simply superb balance!

T: Taste follows the nose, which is great. Initial taste is one of sweet caramel and amber malt. The beer would have merely been good had they left it at that, but what happens afterwards makes the beer excellent. The malt gives way to a strong hop backbone consisting of grapefruit, pine and lemon peel. Truly magnificent.

Also of note, while the hop backbone is strong, it doesn't leave a lingering hop aftertaste. It's almost as if this beer has come down from heaven.

M: Again, excellent. Lots of carbonation and very full-bodied for an APA. Glides down the throat smoothly, though, even with the carbonation apparent.

O: Exquisite. Par excellence. Three Floyds, you are king!

This has always been a sure bet for me. Alpha King satisfies your no-nonsense hop cravings. The appearance is a nice copper orange with an average head. The lacing just stick to the glass and makes intricate patterns along the sides. The smell is like a fresh bag of hops. It really kicks you like a mule. The taste is just explosive with tartness and smooth bitterness. The alcohol content is well hidden by the hops, but it hits the cranium with no problem. If you were to belly up and drink this all night off the tapper, you would be floating higher than Nick Nolte. This is one kick ass pale ale!

12oz bottle fresh from the brewery. Beautiful copper colored ale with a thick frothy head. Big piney citrusy hoppy aroma which smells like a good amount of Cascade but I could be wrong. None the less, fantasticly hopped. Smooth body with a bitter slightly dry finish. Terrific flavor with nice blend of malts and hops. A bitter pale but fantastic and nearly an IPA in my opinion. Delicate lacing. Wish I had more of this.

Pours a nice chestnut amber with a foamy head that leaves a sticky, sprawling lace. An outstanding aroma featuring floral and citrus hops with some maltiness in the very background. The flavor is dominated by an incredibly tasty citrus hop spice with some sweet, fruity malt notes that balance very nicely. In fact, a toasted, caramel malt flavor comes through very noticeably as well. The mouthfeel is quite smooth with a subtle carbonation tang.

This is easily the best pale ale I’ve tasted since having tried the American pale ale examples produced by Legend and Sierra Nevada. As many other BA’s have observed, it certainly is a lot hoppier than your typical American pale ale, but, as most of those BA’s have also pointed out, who cares, it’s fantastic!! Highly recommended

Appearance
This ale poured a nice amber coloured well carbonated, finely bubbled ale. Decent light tan coloured head formed on the pour. Fine lacings remained after the head dissipated.

Aroma
This ale has a big IPA like nose. Theres lots of resinous hops in here, mostly piney, but grapefruit also present. Malty notes below the hops, with scents of toasted biscuit and caramel.

Taste
Also almost tastes like an IPA with the bitter resinous hops. The pine and grapefruit from the hops dominate, but the malts have some backbone tasting of lightly honeyed toasted biscuit, caramel, and just a hint of creamy nuts.

Mouthfeel
This is a damn fine pale ale, well balanced but definately tilted towards the hops. Tea like astringency on the finish, as well as a slight metallic taste/feel that comes with the bitterness.

Drinkability
This is a very drinkable hoppy beer, and would make a great session brew for a hophead. Would also make a decent introductory brew for those wanting to explore hoppier beers. Ill be drinking this one again.

This particular Alpha King review was taken from a brown growler filled at Ashland Beverage Center who had it on tap(I ended up drinking 3 total growlers full lol) though I've had many bottles of this as well. Poured into a nonic style pint. May I add that this specific FFF tap handle art is out of this world. Pure eye candy.

A - deep amber and I mean the deepest of glowing dark amber. Creamy white head sits atop and the ring of creamy lace stays around the entire experience leaving excellent stick to my nonic glass.

S - Big whiffs of fruitiness. A fruitiness that only comes from FFF. Some grapefruit, but smacks of mango and tangerine. Caramel like malt backbone provide the sweetness with a small touch of spice. Great aroma really starts things off in a class manner.

T - flavor is out of this world good. Caramel sweets and a faint toffee. Bready biscuit flavored malt balance nicely with a quick rush of grapefruit and pine like hops. Next is the sweet fruitiness of soft mango and orange with a hint of pineapple. Not as gushing with it as other FFF styles, but still very much present. These are the flavors I crave and FFF always deliver.

M - Medium bodied with a grand thick texture for a pale ale. Smooth and flows brilliantly while coating every inch of the palate with flavor. One of the smoothest 6.6% abv ales you'll ever find.

O - one of my all time favorites. From day one Alpha King was a classic and deserving Halloffamer. It's by far the 2nd best American pale ale ever produced IMO and I'm sure everyone knows who make the #1 APA. Yep, FFF hold both of those 1 and 2 spots in my book. Simply remarkable what they do with Alpha King and Zombie Dust. Both are clear cut winners and both a must try. If you have access to this then you should be enjoying it. It's top shelf good. I just wish we'd get the bottles of this on a regular basis here at home. Ill buy this anytime I see it. A well balanced world class APA that's ridiculously tasty and fulfilling? Indeed. FFF brewing a liquid like Alpha King = pure Class. Pure genius.
