Pours a clean yellow/ gold-ish color with a white head. In the aroma, smokey, small roastiness, and a small pork hint. In the taste, lager notes and a small smoke flavor, especially in the end. A small smoke like bite with a medium mouthfeel, and a semi dry, smoke like aftertaste. Light and nice smoke and body, very palatable.

Had on tap at the brewpub!

A- Poured a lightly hazed golden light orange color. One finger off white head that shows light retention and ends up capping the beer. Light web lacing that turns into streaks as I drink this down.

S- Smoked wood and meat overtake most of the aroma to the beer. Some light bready malts with some citrusy hops. Not much else as the smoked aroma is overwhelming in a good way though.

T- Smoked meats with a light woody flavor comes through the front. Light bready malts in the middle but even those get overtaken by a second coming of a smoked flavor. I can't pick up any hops in the backing of this although I know I should....just more of a meaty smoked flavor.

M- Lighter mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the beer and style I suppose. Smoked flavor lasts from the first sip to long into the aftertaste. No real drying on the palate from alcohol. Flavor was one sided through and through.

D- This was a interesting and well kind of refreshing beer. This is the second smoked beer I have had from Three Floyds and they seem to know how to make a good one. Although I figure it can't be that hard but what do I know? Good job guys!

AKA "Osti Helles" according to the brewpub.

Two pints at Mrs. Murphy's, following the international whisky tasting (only a couple ounces).
Thanks to acme for the hookup!

Bright gold shot through with orange. A wispy cap of white foam that stuck around, but didn't lend much character overall.

Very mild smoke in the aroma, more prevalent in the taste, a sweet biscuity malt comes through equally. It's more of a wood smoke, though some salty hammy notes come through too. Mild sweet malt in the middle and drying smoky flavor lingers in the finish. Body is medium for a lager, and carbonation is a touch lower than expected. Low level bitterness in the back. Well balanced with slightly more smoke character than Schlenkerla Helles. Two pints were no problem... it would be cool if the German places in town picked this up.

A - Golden colored beer with a little bit of white head that left some nominal lacing an stick on the sides.

S - A bit of smoke with some bready malts with some sweet caramel, little bit of honey. Little bit of spice.

T - A bit of smoke with some spice on top of sweet malts. Pretty deep flavors, a little bit of pork in there which I find to be a nice touch. Pretty tasty.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

O - Good beer, very enjoyable. This is a style that is sophisticated enough that too many places mess it up thinking they can just kick one out.

Served in a pokal at The Firkin.

What a nice surprise finding this beer here this night. Yes. It pours a cloudy, really pale straw topped by nearly two fingers of white froth. The nose comprises smokey charcoal and what seems like a nice bit o' sweet pineapple. Didn't see that coming, I can tell you that. The taste holds notes of peppercorns, light smoke, chipotle peppers, cardamom, light lemon zest, wheat, and a stronger layer of char lining the background. The body is light, with a moderate carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, an interesting take on the smoked helles, something I wish I could get more often 'round here.

Consumed at the FFF Brewpub 9/9/10.

Appearance -- Pours a bright golden amber with a slim and creamy white head. The way it catches the light is stunning.

Smell -- Biscuit malt, grassy hops, clover, fruity lager yeast, and mild wood smoke.

Taste -- Plum and green grape, biscuits, grassy/floral hops, and fruity lager yeast. Woody smoke is present, but not overwhelming; adds a layer of complexity, but doesn't overtake the beer.

Mouthfeel -- Medium to full in body, quite slick and viscous, with massive fluffy carbonation. I've never had a beer that felt like this. A bit too heavy, but interesting.

Drinkability -- A great rauchbier from a brewery that takes pride in not sticking with tradition. The smoke element was done with a skilled hand; added complexity, but didn't overwhelm the subtle Helles lager complexity therein.

Had this on tap more places around the Chicagoland area than I care to count.

Appearance- Amber, a bit darker than I would expect for a Helles. A little cloudy but overall not bad.

Aroma- The smoke comes through a bit but not as much as the classic Schlenkerla (the standard by which all others are judged). A very nice smell that is reminiscent of a classic and well made Helles.

Taste- There's the smoke, yum yum yum. I can drink this all day for the nice roasty, smokey flavor. The delecate taste of a Helles comes through, but the smoke is present and makes the beer far more interesting and worthy.

Mouthfeel- Thin and crisp. It has the same feel as a traditional Helles and the smokiness doesn't get in the way of that. Really a testament since most American Rauchbiers do not have that ability.

Drinkability- This is a sessionable and yet delicious beer. If you can get some do. One of the best American versions of the style.

Grabbed a pint of this at the Local Option during their "Rare Three Floyds" tapping. Great time! This beer threw me for a loop. Poured into the 3Floyd's pint glass and immediately reviewed and enjoyed.

A- It stands at a deep yellow-gold with hues of orange. It is definitely hazy interior that can't be seen through. A solid collar and skin lasts and lasts. Off of the initial head, I noted a solid finger's worth of pure white microfine bubbles. It was almost a whip cream appearance at the base.

S- Heavy campfire memories here. Charred oak woods, minute orange citrus flavors, and a faint hop profile. There was a delicate malt noted on a few sniffs.

T- Initial reaction "I'm drinking a pig." The campfire smoked flavors come out heavily in the opening explosions. Very little hops are detected and mostly exist on the finish. The resemblance to a lager comes out here and take over after the smoke puffs out. Not a lot of bread malts but enough for you to know what style this beer is.

M- Decent body, clean, smooth, low carbonation on any sip or gulp taken. Pretty enjoyable with a faint lingering of flavors on the tip of my tongue along with my lips. Almost in the same way a burnt marshmellow sticks around.

D- I'd do it again if I wanted a campfire roasted pig in my mouth without the mess. No alcohol is ever noted or complained about. I wish I could do a half pint of this in the future, however.

Named Osti Helles on the chalkboard at FFF. Not sure where the Ostemoeller listed comes from. It was listed at 5.1% ABV.

A-Hazy orange tinted golden yellow with a medium white head. Head held firm and left fine lace.

S-Mild smoke aroma up front quickly followed by deep, roasted and a bit of sweet malt.

T-Mild smokiness upfront akin to smoked whitefish, not strong like bacon or ham. Rich, roasted malt flavour with a bit of sweetness and a pleasant grassy bitterness in the finish.

M-Medium-light-bodied with good crispness and lingering smoke and hop flavours.

D-A smoke session beer...hell yea! This is nice stuff. Enough smoke to make sure you know it is and enough good old fashion German Helles influence to make you say, Prost!

A hearty Pilsner-ish beer with distinct but not powerful chipotle flavor. The beer seems as peppery as it is smoky.

The pour is a mildly hazy deep golden appearance with a froathy white head that disipates to stillness within half the pint. No real lacing. Looks like many Zwickle or Keller Biers that I have had.

Aromas of bready/cracker-like malts are met with a light honey sweetness, spicy pepper, and only a tinge of smoked malt aromas. Low esters are drowned out by the spicy/phenolic notes.

Flavors are deeply rich and bready for a Lager. But balanced with the spicy, peppery, smoky flavors the beer rounds out very well. Any hop or fruity flavors are hardly detectible. Not overly complex, this beer showcases the balance of smoked and peppery flavors with sweet malts.

Medium bodied, the beer starts out with a weighted creamy feel but as the carbonation fades, the beer sits heavily on the tongue and palate with little life late.

A delicious, nearly sessionable beer that doesn't let the smoke get out of hand. Balanced with chipotle pepper taste, the beer restrains it's smoky intent.

Served in a pokal glass at The Firkin in Libertyville, IL

This beer was a surprise to see on the menu here. It pours a hazy golden straw color with a nice white foam head. The smell is solely of bacon, or the smoke that provides it its flavor. If I had to dig deeper in the smell there might be a hint of lemon zest. The flavor however is one dimensional, bacon. So it's a dimension that I like. The large amount of smoke is quite interesting. The problem with this beer is that it is light in viscosity on the palate. The extreme smoke doesn't play well with that. I feel that if the beer were more viscous it would be a more enjoyable experience. However, the drinkability suffered greatly due to the fact that it was hard to drink the super smoke on the light palate. Still the flavors were good if you are really into smoke.

This is a smoked helles lager. Served in a stein - on-tap at the brewpub.

A - Pours with a finger of off-white foam that settles to a thin cap and splotchy lace. Hazed golden peach color.

S - Smoked meat, lemony citrus hops, some bready malt and cereal grain.

T - Smoke, stone fruits, finishes with bread and grain character. Aftertaste is a light sour smoke flavor.

M - Again, the carbonation is a little bit harsher than I like. Body is a little bit lighter than expected, after the fairly hearty body on the Infinitas Attero. Sticky, chewy, but lightly tannic finish.

D - This was pretty easy drinking, particularly for a smoked beer. I had no problem with a stein, and I'd definitely have this again. I have no idea what the brew schedule is for this, but I like it better than most of Three Floyds German lineup.

I had this on tap at the Binnys drinking room south of the loop. The menu just listed it as a rauchbier, so I was surprised by its light color. Light golden color, bright and clear, with a few fingers of white foam.

Smoked malts define the nose, no real Helles malts aromas in back that I could tell. Not overly smoked but maybe one dimensional (in a way that I still enjoyed). The smoke defines the flavor too, not too strong but definitely the main note. Crisp and easy drinking, and light enough that the smoke doesn't linger.

Overall pretty good. Not as good as Schlenkerla Helles, which is one of my favorite beers of any style, but still this was decent.

i thought it was a solid beer, a low smoked tone to a medium malty golden ale. the smoke ruled the nose being pretty much all you could taste, but the flavor was a balanced german malt flavor with a tasty smoky finish.

a smoked beer you could session because its not overwhelming, but still strong enough to define the flavor of the beer

This is a smoked helles lager, very similar to a Bamberg lager...On tap at Hop Leaf into a pint glass...Pours a clear medium gold, light white head, not much retention or lacing...Really nice aroma for a lager. Light salty pork and smoke set the tone and are the backbone of this beer. Nice sidenotes of crackers, sweetness and malt...Taste is equally nice, mostly a light smoke throughout that adds complexity to another wise pretty boring lager. A little to light in the feel but easy drinker.

Great attemp at Bamberg style lager. Not as good as those but worth trying if you are a fan of the style.

Boy am I jealous of cadaugherty, as I only had the chance to sample this tasty brew at the 3F brewpub and again at a downtown tavern.

If you're reading this any of you F's, this Flossmorian would love to see this offered in a bottle!

Shortly after sampling The Ostemoller a friend introduced me to Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier. Oste is a fantastic US represenation of this style. There are other smoked beers out there but few offer as much balance, pleasure and drinkability as The Oste.

Taste is an obvious smoke, not dissimilar to a ham, layered on top of a delicious lager. It has a nice yet not overpowering mouthfeel, and at 5.1% you can enjoy several of these with a nice pizza.
