Apocalypse CowApocalypse Cow

Brewed by:
3 Floyds Brewing Co.
Indiana, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
9.5-11.0% ABV, 100 IBUs - This complex double India pale ale has an intense citrus and floral hop aroma balanced by a velvety malt body which has been augmented with lactose milk sugar. With this different take on an IPA we have brewed an ale that is both pleasing to drink and, once again, “not normal.” Cheers! June release.

On tap poured into snifter

A: 4.25 Pours bright golden with 1 finger of head. Great lacing.
S: 4.5 Powerful hop aroma. Nothing short of what I'd expect from 3F with this style.
T: 4.75 Amazing flavor profile. Great hop flavor balanced with a strong bitter sweet malt. The lactose is present, but by no means dominant.
M: 4.25 Silky smooth, well carbed.
O: 4.5 3F never ceases to amaze me. This is one delicious beer that I would recommend to any fan of the style.

A: Bright orange. foamy white head that dissipates quickly. A toad cloud.

S: Creamy citrus sums right up front that blossoms into a huge floral component. Lots of honeysuckle. An essence of rose water with a touch of orange. Rosemary herbs round this bad boy out.

T: Huge orange and caramel up front. A creamy ice cream sweetness. Super bitter finish that lingers on and on. Its spicy with a enough floral hops to make you feel like youre in a garden. That lactate really makes it sweet but not overwhelmingly so. Vanilla on the end. Reminiscent of a white spicy sangria.

M: Creamy as milk. A touch of syrup. Really makes this a pleasant drink.

O: It's definitely different. Big lactate sweetness but balanced nicely with floral, bitter, juicy hops on the end. A great lingering finish. A standout. /94

A: Bright orange body, yellow hue. Almost crystal clear. Lively, slightly off-white head. Retention adequate.

S: Creamy/whip cream strong up front, undertones of lime citrus hops very fresh yet subtle, clean malts, no booze.

T/M: Insane creamy mouthfeel up front, feels like marshmallow cream. Turns to a hop bomb with intense tropical fruit citrus flavors with a lingering bitterness as if just bitting into a grapefruit.

O: Blanketed malt bill, creamy smooth texture of a nitro Victory Donnybrook. No alcohol burn but warms up the body. Highly impressed.

Poured from the bomber into a tripel glass. Very nice orange/amber color with two finger head that takes a while to dissipate and laces from the rim of the glass to the bottom. As expected, the hops are there right upfront on the nose, with hints of fruit. Somehow I smell something almost like cherries. The hops do hit hard on your first sip, but then mellow out with the lactose. Pleasantly suprised that I was expecting to be hit over the head with pine tree taste but it jumped back from that. The bitterness comes back on the throat and leaves an aftertaste, though not a bad one. You can definitely pick out the the high alcohol "imperialness".

I would not say I am a huge fan of this style, but for me this is surprisingly good. Tried it solely based on 3F reputation and it's limited release and am glad I did!
