22 oz waxed bottle poured into tulip glass

A: Small soap off white head that laces the glass nicely. Body is a murky copper almost reddish hue.

S: Lots of sharp resiny hops. Burnt sugars, almost smells like it's going to be strong. A little bit of an oak smell as well.

T: Lots of resiny, floral, hops with a nice tangy bitterness then a little sweetness. Finishes a little smoother with a linger malty bitterness.

M: Medium bodied lighter carbonation almost a little thin.

O: This isn't bad but it isn't anything extraordinary. The mouthfeel us a little surprising I would have thought it was going to be almost cloying but it really isn't the beer finishes somewhat smoothly.

Look: Dark copper with an impressive head for a barleywine.

Smell: Sweet malt and grapefruit rind hops

Taste: Pineapple, malt, alcohol is barely noticeable.

Feel: Smooth and juicy.

It's like a juicy IPA style barleywine! It's tasty and dangerously easy to drink!

I'm reviewing the 2016 version, but prager62 was generous enough to send me both the 2016 and 2017. The beer pours a deep, opaque amber color with a one-finger tan head that's thick enough to coat the sides of the glass. The smell is complex. There's some bright, citrus hops on there, some dark fruits, and some caramel malts. The taste is equally as complex. The hops hit first briefly then the dark fruits come through very strongly. As it fades the caramel and maltiness lingers through to the end. The is a little smell and taste of alcohol also. The mouthfeel is thick and smooth. Overall this is very good and very complex. I would definitely get a could each year to drink and to age, if I had access to it.

Thanks to bakker for sending this particular bottle! Reviewed from notes. This was a 2013 vintage bottle, consumed on 10/30/16. Poured from a wax-sealed 22 oz. bottle into an El Catador Barrel-Aged glass.

A: Hazy to turbid brown. A low amount of visible carbonation, but still manages to form a half-finger of off-white head. This fades fairly quickly to spotty foam.

S: Caramel, toffee, and some mildly faded citrus rind and resin hops. Mild brown sugar sweetness along with the sweet malts. Some bourbon-like sweet notes as well, though this is not the barrel-aged version. Some candied fruits and raisins as well. A nice enough nose, though nothing crazy.

T: Toffee and caramel up front again. Citrus hops and oily hop resin. Sweet malts, boozy ethanol sweetness. Lesser notes of brown sugar with mild fruity yeast esters. Light hop bitter oils persist with the sweet maltiness in the hang.

M: A medium body for style, with low carbonation sensation. The alcohol presence is fairly restrained for a barleywine, though it's still fairly hefty.

O: This was an enjoyable barleywine. Definitely boozy (despite no barreling), and definitely toffee forward. I think the hops have held up remarkably well - though there's not a big bitterness, there are still the citrus and resin flavors. Reasonably good overall, though I'm not sure I'd actively seek out another.
