Notes: Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis, and the rise of the barrel-aged beers, there was an age undreamed of. And unto this, CRUSHING MASS . . . ⚖️

Emerging from the primordial depths, our latest ripper has arrived. Brewed with Dark Matter Coffee and aged for over a year in Willet bourbon barrels, the monster known as Crushing Mass is a barrel-aged coffee stout of unapologetic and mammoth proportions.

Did the world need another barrel aged coffee stout? My wife would always argue “yes”. Let’s dive into this 12 oz. bottle & find out.

Black. Quick collapse head that would do Sea to Summit proud. The nose is swole coffee with faint bits of cocoa & barrel, but not much.

Crushing Mass is definitely a coffee stout. Coffee for hours. I might not sleep tonight. The balance of the beer has to merge into a single organism to stand up to it: The malts enter a starting contest & provide a sweet, boozy counterpoint that supports doses of chocolate, light barrel, slight caramel & vanilla. Them boozes has legs, too. Mouthfeel is old school, no pastries in sight, but still a one & done on a night.

Coffee heavy with just enough complexity to keep it from going full Caribou. I’d have liked the barrel to be more than an afterthought, but my wife really likes it – she’s a full-on daily coffee addict – so the others will likely find their ways into her belly. A good beer.

I'm shocked at quality and lack of hype on this. It's a creamy coffee, with roasty and chocolate notes all the way. No green pepper here. Descent barrel presence yet smooth for 15% ABV. Medium-thick feel. Where did this come from, 3Floyds!?

Pours dark brown with a matte finish and a half finger at most of creamy-looking dark khaki head. It quickly settles into a thin crown that leaves modest lacing.

Coffee up front in the nose with a little chocolate and slight fruity notes (cherry mostly).

The bourbon element is much more forward in the taste with flashes of amaretto, almond, toffee and cherry. Chocolate and strong coffee shows mid-palate. Lightly acerbic coffee bitterness lingers in the aftertaste. The massive ABV is completely hidden.

Relatively full bodied and slick feel with some slow-building, but sharp carbonation.

A nicely made little BBA coffee jawn. Reminds of SMS.

Pours pitch black colt with a 2 finger thick brown foamy head that was packed with bubbles of all sizes, dissipating on the fast side while leaving basically zero lacing. Not unexpected for a BBA brew that sat for a year in Willet bourbon barrels. Wow, the nose is a coffee stout on steroids with fresh ground coffee, burnt coffee grinds, a bag full of coffee and espresso beans, charred wood, smoked grains, molasses, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, vanilla, oaky notes and bourbon. It’s got that Starbucks mocha Frappuccino smell but like it’s was poured over some of the best coffee beans you’ve ever inhaled. I could get into this first thing every morning.

The taste is really good, but a drop off from the aroma. The alcohol heat and thinness of the stout body take away from it a little bit, but the flavor is also really tasty. It’s chock full of fresh ground coffee, burnt coffee grinds, vanilla, coffee beans, espresso, charred wood, smoked grains, molasses, dark chocolate, soy sauce, cocoa powder, bakers chocolate, hot fudge, cacao nibs, bourbon and/or dark rum, more bitter dark chocolate and faint piney hops as it finishes. This brew is not for everyone, but I’m a huge coffee stout fanboy so this is exactly what the doctor ordered.

12 ounce bottle, bottled 10-25-21. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with not quite an inch tan head. Head didn't stay around for too long, and there's a small amount of lacing. I like the aroma, the brew smells like coffee, oak, dark chocolate, roasted malt, dark bread and some vanilla. For the most part I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but there's some caramel, nutty, earthy and burnt/charred malt flavors noticeable. Coffee stands out to me in both the aroma and taste, the barrel character isn't all that strong but it could be overpowered by the coffee too. Mouthfeel/body is full, it's slick and a bit rich with a moderate amount of carbonation. If you're into coffee stouts then definitely seek this one out. I liked it a lot!

Bottle. Tan head. Black color.

Honestly, I expected this to suck. It doesn’t. It tastes like bcbcs back in the 12 oz format days.

Amazing coffee notes. Not burnt, roasted, or bitter. Smooth and creamy. Awesome barrel flavors. Great chocolate and light fudge.

Great body, not a pastry stout thick boi. This this is great.

Pitch black body, brown cap. Huge coffee with good roast in the nose, bourbon, dark chocolate, char, earth, and rustic oak all support the coffee powerfully. Taste has more of a earthy bean complexion to the coffee, but here the barrels in all their willet trademark glory are amazing with the coffee, char, smoke, date, smoke, big dark semi-sweet chocolate, and earth supporting. Feel features booze warmth, rugged oak, astringent and earthy coffee, and dark sticky malt, all in a medium yet thick body. Wonderful coffee ba stout

Pours pitch black with a half finger of dark mocha head that went away quickly. You can tell they used loads and loads of coffee in this one…an absolute coffee bomb. There’s a good amount of sweetness that comes through as toffee, slight caramel, and simple syrup to balance the dark roast coffee. Dark chocolate, bourbon, charred oak tannin, slight coconut, marshmallow/vanilla, and peat are there too. Warm as it goes down and the bourbon is apparent in the flavor, but all things considered this is quite smooth for 15%. High medium body. Slick, oily, slightly sticky. I think Floyd’s makes some of the best coffee stouts out there and this is no exception. If you’re a coffee stout fan, seek this one out.

If you're going to make a mark on the crowded coffee stout scene, you've got to go big. 3 Floyds rises to the challenge with a massive stout, rolled in reckless amounts of coffee bean and sent to slumber in Willet bourbon barrles and the set out to crush the soul.

Onyx black and with a ominous mirror-like sheen, Crushing Mass tops off the pour with a dense and airy mocha froth. As a strong scent of fresh brewed, dark roast coffee drifts across the nose, so does an abundance of alcohol spice. Earthen, charred and slightly smoky, the wreckage of burning cinders lie in its wake. Supple with sweetness, an early rebuttal of caramel, honey and vanilla all seem burnt about the edges as well.

The coffee only grows on the middle palate as the java turns to a strong espresso, Turkish and chickory spice dominates the session. Any sweetness starts to fall off as the bourbon character replaces them with nuanced vanilla, coconut, cherry and nutty oak flavors. Trending very spicy with a non-descript whisky spice, a peppery finish numbs the late palate with ether and Irish coffee.

Full bodied but lessened by the bitter char, whisky spice and rather bold carbonation, the beer has a airy char that engulfs the session to make this beer one not for the faint of heart. Big, brash and aggressive, the boisterous coffee stout lingers long with smoke, char, cocoa powder and a sense of smoldering embers.

Pours black with an inch of tan head that settles into a thick ring around the rim of the glass and patches of foam across the surface of the beer. The aroma is sweet bourbon barrel, faint coffee, and roasted malts. Taste is dominated up front by bourbon, eventually coffee and oak barrel kicks in on the finish. Aftertaste lingers on the tongue. Definitely some char flavor from the roasted malts and a bit of hoppy bitterness tickles the tongue. Hints of vanilla, mocha, and licorice. Alcohol warming is noticeable. Thick, dry, and well carbonated. Overall it is powerful, but good. However, I had three in a row and ended up drunk and vomiting, so watch out.

12oz bottled 10/25/21 ( about a month ago) poured into a Spiegelau stout glass at 53° Fahrenheit 15.1% ABV. The beer pours pitch black with zero light penetration and meager medium brown head. The head recedes to pencil thin ring and a few tiny bubbles. The aroma is dark roasted coffee and mild bourbon barrel. The taste is semisweet caramel & roasted malt with pungent coffee and bourbon barrel character. There is a mild ethanol note that is persistent, yet not unexpected. Moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is oily, medium plus bodied with just less than medium carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, excellent. My only complaint is the ethanol flavor. This could have been a better beer at 12-13%.
