L: Look deep black with little to no head retention. Sticks to the sides of the glass as you twirl it.
S: Deep rich wood, whiskey, dark fruits, vanilla, toffee, so much going on. Fantastic!
T: Same rich flavors as the nose with the exception of the dark fruit. Tons of barrel, dark chocolate, light vanilla, and whiskey. Almost a perfect five.
F: Thick and sticky. Coats your mouth and lingers.
O: This beer is on the level with 2010 Rare, Yellow Wax Assassin, and other greats from the non-adjunct world.

How a 4 year old + bottle can stand up to the test of time like this is beyond me. Warning, My entire tasting group though readily agreed that the barrel is exclusively carrying this beer's greatness, but that is all that is left.

I wouldn't recommend trading what it takes or paying what it costs but I am glad that I got to tick this beer. #899

Side by side with regular '10 Dark Lord and all three other variants from 2011. Thanks Chris for letting this happen!
A: Black, no head, your typical Dark Lord.
S: Smell is reminiscent of the base beer but without the cloying sweetness and soy sauce combo I particularly dislike in this beer. Vanilla, smokiness, molasses, dark fruits, soaked cherry and loads of bourbon goodness. A bit of booze but nothing disturbing.
T: Taste is mainly focused on cocoa and vanilla, tons of it! Bourbon, slight alcohol warm, some coconut. Complex, warming. Finishes quite bitter. No soy sauce whatsoever which is great. Kind of sweet but well balanced with a long lasting, deep complexity.
M: Quite sticky, still drinkable. Heavy mouthfeel, a sipper.
O: Very different from the base beer. The Pappy van Winkle barrel did wonders there. It sure is way better, more balanced and more complex. I'm not sure if I like it better than the '12 bourbon barrel aged variant but it is at least on par, which is saying a lot!

Pours black with almost no head. Smell is big oak, dark chocolate, dark fruits, marshmallow. Really fudgy taste, oak, marshmallow, a tiny hint of oxidation. Nice slick, thick, chewy body. This one's drinking so well right now.
