another hit from 3F. had this with beef Wellington on Christmas Eve. If I could give it a 5.25 for smell and feel I would, very good. Sleigh bells!

Pours a very nice, excellent deep black color with just a bit of tan head and some very nice horizontal lacing. Excellent aroma and taste, both very chocotaly with nice burnt grain attributes and a bit of spices coming through, deep and dark and warming. It goes down very, very smoothly for a higher gravity beer. This is really very, very good, one of the best beers I've had in a long time.

The first bottling of Alpha Klaus yields incredible results.

The pour exhibits an opaque black with reddish tints at the edges. A foamy taupe head appears, too, and sticks around as long as the liquid in the glass.

Nose of piney hops, freshly roasted espresso, chocolate maltiness and a hint of spiciness.

Flavor-wise, I don't know if I can ask for much more. A huge "porter" with a magnificently hopped character shows vast notes of pine, bubble gum, chocolate, and espresso along with a light toffee flavor. While the hop addition is clearly copious, this beer possesses more of a sweet and spicy character than a truly bitter profile. Almost like a Robust Porter/Double IPA hybrid. Vastly complex and if nothing else, delicious.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth with some turbidity.

Furthermore, Alpha Klaus possesses an uncanny drinkability. I don't care if this beer is 10% abv and is only available in a handy 22-ounce economy size bomber, every bit is savored. I love this beer and anxiously await its release each year.

"I saw beerluvr kissing (his glass of) Alpha Klaus, underneath the mistletoe last night..."

Ok, that aside, this long-awaited beer poured into the Kwak cradled bulb glass with a rocky, crater-filled tan head that slowly fell over deep brownish/ruby red liquid. A heady perfume of fresh pungent hop fills the nose, sharp and inviting...the malt doesn't stand a chance here! The taste is a powerful blast of of hoppy flavors, floral, resiny and extremely bitter. As it warms a bit nice roasted malt flavors creep thru mixed with charcoal bitter notes as well. Not a super complex ale, but wonderfully flavorsome, with piney and roasted constituents dueling back and forth. The finish just lingers on as the day is long...no hint of the 7.5% alcohol here, just flavor packed and delicious, this could pass for a super dark IPA with all the hoppiness contained within. I would of given it higher marks if the mouthfeel was just a bit more thick. Outstanding!

Thanks to CRJMellor for this hop bomb!

Comparing this directly to 3F's Black Sun Stout, as they're fairly similar and I wanted to get a feel for the subtle differences.

Alpha Klaus has a slightly less dark head, but the same inky black color. Smells plenty hoppy, though a touch less than the Black Sun. There's also more depth to the smell; whereas Black Sun's nose is almost all hops, there's a sizeable amount of roasted malt and chocolate in Alpha King. The taste pretty much follows suit, similar to the Black Sun, but heavier on the roasted and chocolate malts and a bit lighter on the hops.

Personally, I think I prefer the Alpha Klaus, but only by a hair's breadth. My friend murrayswine likes his beers to be hoppy and unbalanced, and so prefers the Black Sun. Either way, though, you can't really go wrong. Two damn fine beers.

Giant, dense, light chestnut colored head holds like a champ, eventually leaving a sheet of lace. Roasted malt, coffee, maybe some marshmallow in the aroma and a smell I couldn't quite place at first, but I think it's hops, kind of piney, very interesting. A pretty dry beer. Bitter chocolate and roasted malt flavor, some black licorice, some mild sweetness, and those hops all bounce back and forth melding towards the end. Body is moderate, thick for a porter. Looks great, smells great, tastes great ... this beer delivers. Very interesing mix of hops and dark malts. I had no idea what I was getting into and I'm just psyched. Gonna have to stock up.

Clear deep ruby. Almost black. Thin creamy brown head recedes to a fluffy coating that retains nicely. Lacing is quite nice.

One helluvan aroma. While the hops are the main player, there's some great underlying chocolate and roasted bitterness. The hops impart a Huge citric characteristic and some pine notes as well. Some burnt malts, tobacco and char hit the spot as well. One of the best smelling beers I've ever sniffed.

The taste is a plethora of goodies. Many different aspects kick in with some big flavors. I'll start with the hops again. Big, bitter, piney, citric and raw. But that's not all and they don't overwhelm other flavors. Tobacco juice and char, burnt malts and bitter sweet chocolate. Spicy black pepper mingles with sweet molasses. And there's a dry cocoa residue left on the tongue after the swallow.

Mouthfeel is nice and creamy. Lightly carbonated. Body is about medium-full.

This is a great fucking experiment in Porter Brewing. It's rough and raw and jagged and fabulous.

Thank You Dale!!

22 oz bottle. Perfect thick tan head atop a beautiful brown body. Nice even carbonation. Hoppy chocolate aroma. Those hops are fresh right now for sure. Flavor is rich with chocolate. Nice hop flavor with a light bitterness. Hop flavor and roasty maltiness lingers. Thick and chewy mouth feel. Extremely drinkable and satisfying. That thick head really has staying power, and forms a nice lacing on the glass. the balance in the flavors is perfect in this one. A must have while fresh.

Thick, clingy head mounted atop a deadly-looking, pitch-black body. Can't really comment on the lacing as the head refuses to die. Awesome-looking brew.

Amazing burnt edges highlight the unexpected hop-scent and incredible coffee/caramel malt character with just a little alcohol thrown in.

Oh, shit. I'm not quite to 100 reviews but this is it so far. Stunning in its effortless combination of competing flavors. The dark toasted malt taste with the obvious themes of coffee and smoke are laced with hints of cinnammon, cream and clove. The real surprise is the hops. Now, hops are almost always the key component of any 3F's brew, but for them to work so well within the parameters of the porter style is sublime.

The mouthfeel is creamy without succumbing to excessive thickness and doesn't sit as heavy as one might imagine. This is just a killer beer. Killer.

Tasted on tap at the Three Floyds Brewery Pub in Munster, IN, 12.28.06.

A dark brown offering with a foamy, light brown head. Surprisingly strong, piney hops in the nose, along with roasted coffee beans. The taste is full of thick, luscious roasted malts, bittersweet chocolate, French roast coffee, and more crisp, chewy hops. The hops really make this beer stand out - despite all the rich, thick roasted flavors, you can still taste and get a nose full of the IPA-like dry hopped elements. Very smooth and nicely chewy. Quite possibly the best porter I've ever had.

Evidently the proprieter of the Capital Ale House in Richmond gto a hold of the last case of this or any other Three Floyds beer being sold in the state of Virginia. Lucky us.
Poured a magnificent dark brown-black with a generous tan head. Excellent lacing was left with each sip.
Dark roasted malt and coffee, caramel and brown sugar, mild hops and bread, dark fruit and maybe rasisin and plum? More going on here than I can nail down, but excellent.
The taste was amazing; this lives up to the hype. Chocolate and caramel malts, dark fruits and midly bitter floral hops. Very complex.
The motuhfeel was my favorite part, and totally unexpected. It seriously starts off like any other porter, and I was about to be disappointed until I swallowed. The something strange happens. After you swallow, the semi-bitterness is gone, replaced by a fantastically smooth and mildsly sweet creamy-ness. Its like you just drank a totally different beer. Fantastic and very unique. Medium-full biodied.
Overall an excellent beer, and worth the hype for sure.
