This beer poured very dark with ruby background. If formed a light tan head that left trace lace as it subsided. An aroma of roasted malts and flora hops, with some coffee and chocolate elements to it. The flavor was of malt, hops, coffee and anise. The finish is a touch astrigent and creates an interesting aspect to the overall body. A rather unique porter.

22oz into a Hopleaf tulip. 2012 release.

A: Pours a rich brownish black with a large tan head. Nice lacing.

S: Lots of coffee and chocolate, with the hops lending some slightly fruity acidity. Smells like a chocolate wafer.

T: Big, bitter, piney hops and roasted grain, some mild sweet chocolate. Somewhat dry and acidic.

M: Medium-bodied and creamy.

O: The nose is really where this beer shines.

Poured into a pint glass

A: Moderate pour yields 1/2 finger of dark tan head with okay retention. I'd like better head retention please. Nearly opaque dark brown and good looking.
S: Chocolate, some hops that are mildly reminiscent of marijuana. Cascade too? Hoppy and roasty.
T: Chocolate and pine. Very nice blend of porter and hoppiness. The hops surge forward with juiciness then the chocolate roastiness fills in behind. Very nice!
M: Bitter and very full.
D: Very high. Great stuff. I want another and will buy again. Terrific seasonal.

A bit smoky? Probably just picking up smething in the malt base, but it adds a certain element.

This beer is dark mahogany with just a tiny bit of light getting through. Carbonation is low and the head is tan and quite thin. The nose offers some mild toasted malt and chocolate notes with a hint of cedar.

Flavors are definitely on the mark. Rich, creamy toasted malt with a bit of a sharp hop bite starting at mid-palate that doesn't really serve this particular style all that well. Mouthfeel is quite creamy for a porter. You get flavors of coffee, bakers chocolate, and a slight bit of orange rind from the hops. A terrific beer that, in my opinion, is a bit too hopped for this style. It's very subtle, but the flavors tend to be just a bit too bitter on the finish. Still worth trying if you can find it.

Thanks to David from the Publick House Brookline for hooking us up with this beer which you can't get in MA.

This beer poured a brownish/black body with a huge pillowy tan/off-white head. There's some serious carbonation in this puppy.

Nose is an interesting mix of dark cocoa powder, mellow wood, olive juice, fresh toasted malt, toffee and coffee.

Medium bodied with a mild grain touch from start to finish. Dark roasted malt and very dark espresso beans dominate this beer. Very astringent with a sharp roasted malt bitterness. Has a slightly grainy and very bitter base. Citrus and Earth hops are over the top and surprisingly big for a porter, but never overtake the malt bitterness giving it an almost deceptive hop taste.

Quite a porter. Tastes sort of like someone crushed a butt load of espresso beans into a dark malt based beer, but beyond that... good beer.
