Serving: 1 Pt. 6 Fl. oz. bottle poured into a Founder's Backwoods Bastard snifter. 2017 edition with no bottling date that I can see.

A: I wish they all looked like this. I swear it looks barrel-aged. So thick and oily. So dark. Beautiful beer for a standard RIS.

S: Huge roast, oak, coffee, wood. Some anise, dark fruits. Even some pepper or peppercorn. Very inviting and not intimidating like some hoppy or boozy RIS's can be.

T: Oh yeah. Big sweetness up front. Some milk sugar, lactose, sweet coffee, vanilla, caramel. Finish is more roasty, even more coffee coming through. Some raisin, figs.

M: This is how it's done right here. Super thick and chewy. We're talking BCBS levels of mouthfeel here and this is a standard RIS. It's no wonder BVDL is so outrageously good.

O: This, ladies and gentlemen, is an all-time great. Back when it was the only one out there, it was unbeatable. But with the craft beer boom, people have moved away from this beer stating it's too sweet or sugary. Some of that may have to do with certain vintages though. For my money, this is hands down a top 10 all-time RIS. And that's in good company (Breakfast Stout and variants, Huna, Kuhnhenn AIS). I mean this is up there. The only thing keeping it from 5s across the board is probably that it is a LITTLE too sweet and syrupy at times. But if you dial that from 10 to maybe 8, then this beer is perfect. Some people prefer heavier stouts, more hop balance, more bitterness, more traditional RIS. But for me personally, this is how you do it.

Recommendation: It's obviously one of those bucket list beers. It's abundant enough to go get, so get it.

So very excited to try this one. Thanks Matt! As expected, Dark Lord pours pitch black. Not expected, the thin dark tan head that virtually disappears. Wonderful aroma of deeply roasted grain, burnt toast, dark chocolate and coffee. Flavors follow with an added depth of sweetness. Vanilla was unapparent to me, however, this was not an issue as the roasted and sweet qualities combined exceptionally as it were. The feel is incredible. So rich and dense, smooth, almost oily, full, and ultimately balanced with bitterness mostly coming from roastiness. Overall, I can see why this beer is celebrated on such a high level. It is an exceptional RIS, and I am so thankful to have gotten my shot at it. Cheers!

2016 vintage, c ellared for 16 months
Look: motor oil black, 1 inch creamy khaki head that lasts forever
Smell: coffee, malt and a hint alcohol... you really don't get much vanilla
Taste: coffee, malt, sugar... you get a hint of vanilla and a little soy sauce at the end
Feel: velvet mouth feel, super full body and a slick oily finish.

Overall it's a good imperial stout, a legend that everyone should try once.

2015 "Vintage" Dark Lord that the forced on people in 2017 did not age well. It smelled and tasted like straight soy sauce. Disgusting.

Finally got to try the infamous Dark Lord. I opened a 2017, just to say I tried it. And will age the other one.

[LOOK] - Dark black with no real head to speak of.
[SMELL] - Booze on the nose with coffee notes or perhaps dark fruit or chocolate or spice.
[TASTE] - Very booze forward and the booze dominates the flavor. Will probably mellow out over time
[FEEL] - Very smooth and thin. No carbonation and it's very thin. Heat comes through on the tongue for sure.
[OVERALL] - Very good. Would love to try the variants to get a true mix of what 3 Floyds has to offer.

Bottom line: would certainly buy more if I could, but not sure it lived up to the hype. Being completely honest. Again, it's a 2017 so I might have opened too early.
