Bottle shared at the RBSG 2012 Grand Tasting. Pitch black with an iced coffee head. Aroma is strong on the chilis with plenty of sweet dense chocolate. Vanilla and chocolate flavor, rich caramel and a nice ancho/chipotle flavor. Perfect amount of heat and chili flavor.

Bottle #78/817. leftpaw brought this bottle to March Madness 2017. Man I don't like to think what this was trading for back in 2012 (the year of the bottle0.
Pours black, settles into a still, black liquid with no head. Cognac has always been a boozy barrel for me, and this is no exception. But wait, there's more! Plenty of pepper heat as well. Did not skimp, but also didn't make it a face melter either.
Taste wise, the cognac isn't there, but the heat from both the booziness and the chili peppers are as well. The Dark Lord base is largely absent, which I guess in and of itself, quality aside, is a pretty impressive feat nonetheless. And I wasn't one who thought Dark Lord was all that "sweet" anyways. The peppers and heat bring out the hefty bitterness though. Light dark chocolate note if you can power through the peppers and cognac that dominate. I'm not sure if this is still 15%, tastes stronger. Its a polarizing beer, and I guess I'm in the middle.

They really missed the opportunity to call this Bloody Mary. With all the other similarities aside, the red wax would have been perfect.
Dull blackish-brown with no head.
The aroma explodes with all kinds of green pepper and guajillo. It's a total chipotle chili takeover!
This really tastes like a bowl of chili, to the point I get notes of roasted tomato. Aside from the viscosity, which simply steers me closer to chili territory, the Dark Lord is almost completely absent from this performance, as it goes down with a burning sting. I also get zero barrel character, and it's a damn shame to have wasted something as rarely used as cognac barrels in aging a big, quality stout.
Spicy, slick and smooth but also tingly and thin, and just kinda bad.

Bottle 305/817:
For being almost 3 years old the burn of the peppers is still there. I was slightly surprised by that. Very viscous and velvety. A little sweet for my taste but that's with all Dark Lord varieties. I think this one is enough for me. If you can find it, search it out.

Bottle 774/817. Poured your typical dark lord, Medium to thick. Nose is a poor collage of oak, plums, and hot sauce. Taste is a horrid, hot, unbalanced mess. Just awful. I have heard others say they enjoyed it and did not experience what I did. Perhaps slight variations from bottle to bottle?
