Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Now this is a saison! This refreshing Belgian-style ale is the combined effort of Three Floyds and De Molen’s fantastic brewer Menno (the real Dutch Hercules). This spicy and bracing ale was brewed in Munster, but look out for the one we brew in Holland at DeMolen. Cheers and drost!

Bomber into FFF Teku.

Saison? I think this is an IPA. And a hopped up, bitter, assertive, abrasive IPA in the FFF style at that!

Anyway-- big hopped up bitterness blends with white pepper and a little boozy heat to make this most unlike the typical saison that I'm used to... Notes of tropical citrus fruits lead the way in terms of hops, while a bready chalkiness is ever-present from the malt/yeast combo.

The beer looks nice, but that's about it for me... It's almost like finally getting a date with that cute girl only to realize that the cuteness is all you could really like-- there's just no substance there.
Well, ok, that might be a bit extreme.
It's more like going to a strip club, paying the cover, seeing 8 GORGEOUS girls walking around, and then discovering that it's 'no nudity' and they wear pasties.

Even that sounds too extreme. But, it is FFF, and they simply don't do simple. Almost everything is extreme in some way and generally, it works. Not so much here though.

Feels thick, syrupy, and bit undercarbonated-- though it really LOOKS great. Two fingers of fluffy, rocky head that almost overflowed my glass and leave intense curtains of lacing behind.
Glowing orangey-golden body is just barely hazy enough to obscure transparency....

Overall-- I'll finish this beer-- by NO means is this a drainpour! It simply isn't the style of saison I like best... A bit too boozy, too hoppy, and too thick.
But to be fair, it see,s to make for a pretty decent "Winter Saison."

Notes from a review on 11/30/12

This is the biggest 'saison' in every way. It pours a completely opaque hazy gold/orange with a great white head made up of mostly small, tight bubbles. The aroma is very yeast/cereal like with HUGE citrus hops - ripe grapefruit and mango, orange juice. The tastes follows the nose - very bready but also very bitter from a strong hop presence. Just crazy huge citrus hops.

This is a fantastic beer - don't know if I would call it a saison, but more of a DIPA with saison ingredients.

Smooth grapefruit juice, hoppy yet not bitter, a great balance of spice and malt makes it a very tasty beverage indeed, also some melon and candy. Grapefruit aroma. Cloudy grapefruit appearance with some retained head. Thanks for the extra bottles, John

A - dark orange with a thin white head

S - oranges, yeast, peaches

T - yeast, oranges, orange rind, faintly bitter

M - dry, very well carbonated, smooth

This is a very nice saison. It has a nice citrusy character that is very refreshing and offers a great drinkability. My only complaint is that there is a rind-like dryness throughout. Nonetheless, this is a quality beer that is definitely worth a try.

22oz bomber, split 3 ways, cheers @suncrust

appearance: served in my great lakes chalice, bright (but hazy) orange body, full creamy white head

smell: distinctively 3 floyds - bright citrus hop bouquet, juicy citrus, distant peppery spice

taste: Sure, it's not to style, but it's much better than Rabbid Rabbit. FFF influence is strong - De Molen is no stranger to hops either but outside of the label design, I would never have guessed they were involved. Bright juicy hops - tangerine, grapefruit, lemon.

mouthfeel: bold hop profile, slight dry finish

overall: very enjoyable

The beer pours a rich looking amber with no head. The nose is pure grapefruit hops with a touch of funk...barnyard zombie dust? There just as much grapefruit in the taste and aftertaste along with good yeast character and sweetness. The beer's mouthfeel is medium with ample carbonation.
This is a great beer and an unexpected highlight at our tasting.

Big thanks goes out to aasher for sharing this one during the One Year Anniversary of My Wreck Tasting! Served from bottle into a Crooked Stave ‘Crooked Line’ tulip. Poured a hazy golden yellow-orange with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, pineapple, citrus, citrus hop, and passion fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruit, tropical fruit, citrus, and fruit hop. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. There was quite a bit of fruit going on in this one which was a welcomed change-up for the evening. This helped to make it quite easy to drink and enjoyable. There wasn’t really that much that stood out to me on this one which is why I can’t put it in the next tier. What was there was quite nice, but just missed a little something to take it to the next level. Worth trying if you get the chance.

Served in a tulip glass, quick review from written notes.

Dripping spotty lace, lasting veil over the surface. Bright orange body. Savory tropical aroma, alternating sweet and dry. Huge papaya and dried mango flavors. Finishes dry and clean, some lingering fruitiness with a bubblegum aftertaste. Impressions of fuzzy fruit skins and distinctive dried papaya. Great balance and unique flavors on display here...
