A - cloudy, hazy orange with a huge, off white head that has great retention

S - oranges, grapefruit, bread, cake batter, alcohol

T - grapefruit, citrus, cake batter sweetness

M - medium bodied, well carbonated

I really enjoyed this beer, but I was hoping for some profound rye notes. I didn't get any rye in fact. I really enjoyed the hop character, and I have a soft spot for cake batter-like sweetness. Despite the lack of rye notes, I was impressed. It's definitely worth a try.

Half inch white head, dark golden body. Plenty of small sediment floating. Sticky lacing, pretty decent head retention.

Dank + rye spice = yum aroma boner.

Rye spice and hoppiness is over the top, and I loves it. Melt backbone is there but gets blown away. If I had to guess it would be that this is a 10%abv.

Thicker mouthfeel, adequate carbonation.

Those who haven't had much rye beers beware, not for the fanit of heart (noobs). Can't say enough about. Yum thanks kawilliams81, go Huskies!

Bottle from Sean. Served in a Kuhnhenn tulip.

A - Thick white foam settles to a thin cap, chunky collar, and splotchy lacework. Hazed dark orange-apricot body.

S - There's a ton of rye in here, along with a hefty dose of lemon zest and piney hops. There's a hint of tropical fruits, a hint of soap, touch of onion, and lightly burnt sugary malts. Really earthy and spicy, but not a ton of alcohol which is a plus.

T - The flavor is a little bit sweeter and reveals more of it's DIPA nature here. There's some juicy tropical fruit mixed with candied citrus over top of a moderately sugary malt backdrop. Rye is present but not in the same intensity as the aroma. Slightly yeast finish with medium bitterness.

M - Medium-full body, with some nice dryness to it. Not sure of the ABV, but there's not much burn or alcohol warmth - just a creeping buzz that sets in after 10oz or so. Zesty but pleasant carbonation.

D - Not as strong as Rye'd the Lightning but still another enjoyable beer from 3 Floyds. The 'imperial'-izing of the recipe has diminished the drinkability and I don't like the balance of flavors quite as much. Still, definitely worth checking out if you like hoppy rye beers!

Rye'd Da Lightning was spectacular so I was very excited to hear that this would be bottled. This beer pours a light to medium bodied, very cloudy dark burnt orange in color with a two finger soapy head. The nose is citrusy and dry. It has moderate bitterness and also a pretty prevalent Simcoe aspect as well. There is also a touch of alcohol present. The flavors feature slightly sweet malt and citrusy hops upfront. Its also a little soapy. I don't get much rye or spicy characteristics at all. It then changes to that trademark Simcoe quality with a good amount of alcohol. The amount of alcohol present really keeps this one from being well balanced. Overall this is a decent DIPA but not in the Dreadnaught, Arctic Panzer category and I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as Rye'd Da Lightning.

Thanks to Robbie for this bottle! About 1-2 months old (but no bottle dating).

A - Medium orange, slightly cloudy with ahin layer of cream-colored head.

S - A massive frsh grapefruit aroma up front with a big pine presence as well. Some lighter peach notes and touch of spicy from the rye provide secondary aromas. Very fresh and very inviting nose!

T - Fresh grapefruit, pine and peach flavours accompany a very good but not overwhelming bitterness. Light caramel and spice from the malt base in the background. Very fresh and juicy.

M - Medium body. Chewy. Light carbonation. Lots of stick hop oils.

Many thanks to jisom123 for sending this bottle!

A - Pours a hazy orange/gold color with a massive billowing head and incredibly sticky lacing, carbonation is small and steady.

S - Alot of sweet, juicy, assertive and pungent fruit resin: mango, papaya, tangerine, and pineapple being the strongest aroma of the bunch. The only indication of malt anywhere in the nose is from the spicy rye and nothing else.

T - Taste follows the nose with a massive wall of resinous and oily tropical from start to finish. Up front is a massive wave of pineapple rinds, mangos, and tangerines and ends with a perfect sweet red grapefruit bitterness. The rye lends itself to a spicy, peppery character that adds to the intensity of the frutiness - lingering fruity spice. As the beer gradually warms a slight touch of caramel malt surfaces but it's buried way down there. There is some alcohol effervescence and warming as it slides down the throat.

M - Medium body, semi-dry finish, slightly oily, and with prickly carbonation.

O - For any lover of Imperial IPA/D-IPA's, this is a "fantabulous" beer and a must try before it starts fading. Thanks, jisom123!!

On tap at Strong Ale.

A: Effulgent orange with no clarity though a nice color. Big frothy white head.

S: Strong pine resin with lots of orange and grapefruit rind and flesh. Pungent hop presence with a bit of bread and biscuit.

T: Juicy orange and grapefruit with notes of biscuit and rye that provide a solid foundation for the hop expression. Huge hop flavor with a smooth lower moderate bitterness. Very well hidden alcohol.

M: Medium body with upper medium carbonation.

Overall: Toward the balanced end of the Double IPA spectrum but still very nice. Well done.

Bottle courtesy of apocalypsezombie. Thanks, Tom!

It's pouring a hazy orange with over a 2 finger head of foam..I pulled it from the fridge about an hour ago.

The smell is all sorts of hoppy. Citrus, pine, volumes of tropical fruit pineapple is there for sure, and a nice spiciness from the rye. Overall, not overly bitter in the nose.

And then I taste it and all of what I've written is there as well as a very solid malty taste that adds just the right touch of sweetness. Wow, this is very tasty and I'm not getting much, if any, of a booze burn.

Full bodied with lighish carbonation, the mouthfeel is truly grand. Man, that rye really adds a great dimension to a DIPA. Thanks again, Tom! An awesome drinking experience is what I have here.

Nice orange pour, full on inch of head. Looks very nice. Aroma was quite well done, the usual new blend of amarillo and citra seemed in full effect.

Lots of citrus flavors, non distrating bitterness, sweet and spicy malt bill, dry mouthfeel, for having double the rye, it doesn't seem to have the usual stickiness of it, drier than that. I dunno why more people don't talk about this one.
