Disappointing beer with a very cool label. Backmasking is a mildly flavorful, very sweet stout: that sweetness is necessary to conceal what is, at the end, a fairly harsh acridity from the roasted malts used. The oats are not noticeable at all, aside from a mild perception in mouthfeel, despite the "oatmeal stout" caption on the packaging. While I was drinking this, I found myself thinking that either I received a bad bottle direct from the brewery (unlikely) or this is just not a very good recipe. Both are unacceptable when paying $10 for 22oz of beer, making this a beer I'd avoid purchasing up again.

Pours a voluminous >3cm tall head of dark tan foam, made up of small-sized bubbles, creating a frothy appearance. Retention is above average, the foam lasting several minutes, fading to a thick ring around the perimeter of the glass and a collection of very small islands of residual lace atop the body of the beer. Lacing is excellent, with a dense matrix of dots and lines clinging to all sides of the glass. Beer's body is dark brown to black, with light bringing out no change. Carbonation visible at the top of the beer, not through the opaque body, being somewhat moderate in number and activity.

Aroma is surprisingly mild and sweet, with a ghostly-there backdrop of cocoa, vanilla, marshmallow, and slight woodsy and pine scents.

Overall flavor is of very sweet (almost saccharine) vanilla, cocoa, and charred toast with mild pine and woodsy hop characters; a bit of ethanol rounds things out. Front of palate is sweet charred toast, cocoa, vanilla, pine and woodsy hops. Mid-palate of mildly sweet, smoothed-over charred toast, light powdered cocoa and vanilla, mild bitterness, pine-like hops, and hints of ethanol. Back of palate features strong sweetness, light cocoa and charred toast, woodsy hop characters, mild bitterness, and hints of ethanol. Aftertaste of somewhat harsh and acrid charred toast and cocoa, vanilla, mild bitterness.

Beer is medium in body, with carbnation of medium intensity, resulting in a foamy (9/10) and smooth (1/10) mouthfeel that's a bit too foam-intense for the style, which never allows the smoothness from the oats to be particularly noticeable. Ethanol is surprisingly obvious as a modest burn on the palate and back of throat, warmth in the nostrils. Closes quite dry, with heavy stickiness clinging to the palate and lips.

It's good as always, but also as always I don't understand their need to put their standard hop profile in almost EVERYTHING they do.
To me many of their stouts and porters are overpowered by an overbearing hop profile, this while not as overbearing, probably because it is 6 months old, was likely more so when released. Everything does not need to be ipa hopped, like say, an oatmeal stout.

Deeply rooted in the traditions of London brewing, Th fraree Floyds gains inspiration and gumption when brewing a beer of their darker and more balanced side. Their Oatmeal Stout is roasty but smooth. Sweet but dry. -and then citrusy and racy... Ok, maybe an American influence is setting in...

The beer's ominous black body is highly masculine and dark- both in appearance and in spirit. Yet its look simply simmers in the glass, swirling with bone-white creme that settles after initially forming a thick blanket. Its lace is broken and spotty as the light carbonation prohibits its exuberance.

Its aromas are heavily toasted, chocolaty, and java-like. Even as its cream and toffee scents arise, they all seem singed or burnt but in the most savory of ways. Woodish tones amount, as earthen nutty flavors pronounce as the beer's scent is of mother's milk before that first sip.

But no mother's milk here- only toffee, heavy toast, dark-roast coffee and bitter chocolate frame the beer's initial taste. An earthy follow of nutty coffee blends, chicory, burnt bread and smoldering embers offer up something that's heavily charred but also something that's milkshake-like to temper any acrid roast. Finishing with burnt pine cones, vanilla and mint, its taste is sublime but also mildly abrasive

BackMasking's taste turns creamy as the mouthfeel sets in- creamy-dry on the early palate, the beer's slim extra sweetness simply balance the roasted elements of char. But the middle is both malty-dry and smoothned with heavy cream.

Trailing with a sense of campfire and ash, the beer's minerally finish speaks more to the tradition of brewing than it does to tomorrow thereof. But it's a delightful beer, especially when you don't have to think about it too much.

On tap at Studio 35 Columbus. Nice change of pace beer in between all the other hoppy pales from 3Floyds.

Pours an opaque dark brown with a tan head that persists and leaves spotty lacing.
The aroma is chocolate and sweet malt with roasted notes, a bit of nuttiness and brown sugar and raisin.
Chocolate leads the way on the taste buds with raisin and brown sugar sweetness and a slight tart note.
Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy.
A bit pricey but among the best oatmeal stouts I've had.

Has a light coffee nose sweetened with dark sugars and seasoned with a hint of cinnamon and a whiff of chocolate.
It pours dark brilliant brown with a fluffy 1” tan cap.
The attack begins with chocolate, coffee, and big spicy grain flavors. Although malt driven, very well rounded.
A creamy, silky smooth chewy body has a touch of slickness and oiliness.
