On-tap at 3 Floyds. Split an imperial pint with Nate, and then got another half pint before we left. Apparently this is actually an ale, but it falls somewhere between Japanese Rice Lager and American Pale Ale in style.

A - Big creamy white foam settles to a thick cap, leaving sheets of lace behind. Transparent golden body that was perhaps a faintest bit lighter than the other two pale ales I had.

S - A hefty dose of Sorach Ace lemon character, with a bit of black tea and earthiness, and the mild buttered, lemon tart flavor I always get from this hop.

T - Quite similar, with loads of lemon tart, a bit of bubblegum, and some restrained floral notes. Verging a bit towards Pledge, but avoids being medicinal. Malt sweetness is restrained, and bitterness is quite high as one would expect. Perhaps a hint of onion in the periphery.

M - Chewy, medium body, with well-hidden alcohol, and zesty active carbonation. Super dry, as rice beers tend to be.

D - Didn't like this quite as much as Samurai Gazebo, as I prefer the lower ABV of that beer, but it was still highly enjoyable. 3 Floyds seems to have a great handle on how to effectively use Sorachi Ace hops, and I hope they continue to make beers like this in the future.

How many rice lagers have I ever had? LIke, one? Sapporo? Is Kirin one? Cus Kirin tastes just like MGD light...

Anyhow, unlike their exquisite Czech Booty Camp, this is less of a typical example of the style and more like the Floyds bein' the Floyds with a new set of ingredients. And this brew is, well, it's quite something.

Smells like a lawn. Not simply like grass, but a combination of grass and astringent lawn-enhancing products. Verdant hops mix with bread dough and odors that are pleasantly artificial.

Tastes like a goddamn rollercoaster. Weird green up front, moving into a dense biscuitiness that's like if you just cracked open a tube of Pillsbury Cresent rolls--that super jolt of butteryness that almost throws you off your seat. Finishes very dry, with only a little bit of bitterness lingering after the beer gets swallowed.

When you drink Sapporo there's a very distinct thickness to the beer. Sometimes, if it hits you right, it's silky. Other times it's slimey. Rice-heavy lagers are hard to balance, is what I'm getting at, and the Floyds seem to have rendered that problem mute by making the beer taste like raw dough and then upped the carbonation.

Had it on tap at the brewpub. Didn't have time to do a full-on analysis so I'll sum it up quickly -

Nice beer. Crisp and clean. Personally, I'm not big on the Japanese Rice style, but they seem to have done it well.

A nice experiment and change of pace, but I don't see myself ordering it again. If you like the Rice style, I have no doubt you'll enjoy it.
