From old, undated notes. Had this on draft at the brewpub.

Taste follows nose, but hops assert themselves and overpower the stout tastiness. A nice black IPA but a near miss as a stout.

Taste: complex, roasted dry hopped, slight bitter,. Exotic floral hopped, garden hopped nose. Black, opaque, with dark tan head, some lace. Medium body. Hop forward stout I had years ago.

Reviewed 1/5/2014 from 2013 vintage
A: Pitch black liquid, tan head with great retention
S: A tad raisiny
T: Good roasty and chocolatey notes. Nice assertive hops that back off and are not overpowering in the finish
M: Waerming, roasty
O: Very tasty, but the smell is so different and off-putting that I marked it down.

Thanks to iguenard for the bottle!

Even after a year-ish of age on this bottle, the hops are still potent, very surprising. A nice deep body, black with a creamy head. As noted, this had a really hop nose along with ample roasted malt, cocoa, dark chocolate. The taste was also very dry from bittering hops as well as dark roasted malts, char, burnt coffee, cocoa nibs. It had a nice round, full mouthfeel and a nice amount of carbonation.

Bottle into my Lost Abbey glass.

Coal-black, a thick, dark blanket. One finger of dense tan foam sticks to the sides of the glass in attractive horizontal strands.

Surprising hop character. Orange peel, pine, wood smoke -- like a swig of OJ in a pine forest. Alcohol, chocolate and toast swirl as well.

Citrus carries through into the flavor, but all the bitterness seems to be coming from burnt malts. A bright blend of pine and dark chocolate-dipped orange slices, with a bit of smoke and woodiness.

The aroma and flavor are decent, but the mouthfeel might have them both beat. It's medium in viscosity while smooth and light as whipped cream.

A nice example of a hoppy stout. Not life-changing, but tasty.

Spent one year in the cellar bough fresh from the brewery

Pours pitch black in color and pretty viscous. A big finger and a half foamy light tan head retains nicely.

Smell is good. Lots of roasted barley maybe some rye are forward in the nose and fade to a toffee aroma. an earthy hop aroma finishes.

Taste follows the nose with big roasted barley and rye flavors upfront. Malt is decently balanced with a mild bite, hints of tobacco and saddle leather, moderate earthy hop flavor and mild bitterness.

Mouthfeel is moderately thick with a little bit of stickiness and some oily hoppy resin.

Had I realized how hoppy this was I would have drank it fresh. Not a great stout but I'll give it the benifit of the doubt considering it's age.
