750 ml bottle into signature teku glass, 2016 vintage. Bottle #34? of 1???. Mostly rubbed off. Pours thick pitch black color with a thin creamy tan head, that reduces to a thin ring of lace that lingers. Minimal spotty lacing on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, brown sugar, caramel, toffee, fudge, white grape/wine, toasted oak, roasted nuts, biscuit, and dark bread/crust; with lighter notes of vanilla, licorice, raisin, prune, cherry, fig, date, smoke, char, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Slight booze in the aromas as it warms, but not overwhelming. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, sugar, vanilla, muscat barrel, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with big strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, brown sugar, caramel, toffee, fudge, white grape/wine, toasted oak, roasted nuts, biscuit, and dark bread/crust; with lighter notes of vanilla, licorice, raisin, prune, cherry, fig, date, smoke, char, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Very mild herbal, grassy, roast, charred bitterness; wine/oak tannin spiciness; and wine tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, brown sugar, caramel, toffee, fudge, white grape/wine, toasted oak, roasted nuts, biscuit, dark bread/crust, vanilla, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, char, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, sugar, vanilla, muscat barrel, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a nice hop/roast bitter/sweet and wine/oak tang/tart/spiciness balance; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering hop/roast bitterness, and wine/oak tannin spiciness. Light-medium carbonation and extremely full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/velvety/bready/slick, and lightly sticky/chalky/tannic mouthfeel that is fantastic. Mild increasing warmth of 15%, with minimal lingering barrel booze after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic barrel aged Russian imperial stout. All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, sugar, vanilla, muscat barrel, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV, with the mildly bitter/tannic/drying finish. Fantastic soft feel for the finishing gravity. Amazingly rich malt complexity with sugar, coffee, and great wine barrel presence/integration; solid earthy hops and restrained fruity yeast. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on base style as expected. This wasn’t as fruity from the wine as I expected. Got better as it warmed.

L: Pour inky black (typical dark lord variant).
S: Sweet and mild barrel but the sweet notes from the wine take over the base beer. Dark fruits present and slight tart wine notes.
T: It was very sweet when we had it on tap at DLD in '16. The bottle we recently opened was calmed down on the sweetness and more complex. Barrel notes are coming through with a slight tartness that balanced some of the sweetness. Loads of dark fruit and slight chocolate coming through now. I can see this beer getting better in time.
F: Typically thick and motor oil-like for dark lord.

2013 Moscatel Dark Lord
Bottle #1004 of ????(rubbed off)

A- More deep brown than black. Some brownish red edges, no head.
S- Classic Dark Lord- dark fruits, sweet. Barrel adds some white grape notes
T- More refined that regular dark lord. Very sweet, but the barrel adds a nice sweet wine finish
F- Thick like syrup
O- Enjoying more than the 2012 regular that was most likely the base of this beer. I like sweet wines so this was nice. Still very complex like dark lord, but the barrel really did help. Not mind blowing, but fun to try.

Take the sweetness of base Dark Lord and dial it up a notch. Almost too sweet; a true desert beer.
