Notes: Collaboration with Half Acre Beer Company

Brewed with our friends at Half Acre, Anicca IPA is single hopped snake juice showcasing the Mosaic hop, a plant throwing off a cornucopia of fruit flavors. Bitter sweet and full of force, this IPA bends your brain into a tropical storm of writhing glory.

Available in 22oz bottles. This is the version brewed at 3 Floyds in August 2013.

22oz Bomber
Three Floyds

Anicca pours bright polished copper with a crystal clear body that shines in the light. A creamy white head forms and leaves sheet lacing down the glass after each drink. A carbonation bubble will escape periodically and rush to the surface. IPAs don't look much better than this guy.

Damn! This beer smells impressive. Sweetened red grapefruit and tangerines lead the way on the hop front with juicy ripe mango, candied citrus peel, and a dusting of pine for support. I can't keep my nose out of the glass. My mouth instantly waters. A sweet, candy like maltiness bolsters the already mouthwatering hop profile.

The flavor profile runs step for step with the nose and drips with juicy, citrus and tropical fruit flavors. Again, sweetened ruby grapefruit, tangerine, candied citrus rind, and mango all run shoulder to shoulder. A mild pine quality pops up here and there while a moderate bitterness coats the tongue. High quality!

The carbonation is on the low side of the spectrum which allows the velvety smooth body to just glide through at its own pace. The body on this beer is about as good as you can get and a solid bitterness lingers.

Anicca is another great Three Floyds/Half Acre collaboration and one of the juicier IPAs I've had in a long while. If this was brewed all year I'd buy it often. Get some!

22oz bottled (dated 12/22/14) poured into a tall-stemmed tulip

Initially nervous about this one, as an aggressive pour produced a beer the color of deep iced tea, a hue I associate more with barleywines than DIPAs, and with a very large beige/tan head, one that leaves spotty rings of lace. Notes of tropical fruit, citrus, slightly sweet grains dominate the nose, whereas the flavor is primarily crisp pine and tea leaves. A creamy smooth mouthfeel rounds the beer out and delivers an enjoyable, moderately lengthy finish. I realize that by the time I got to try this it was a bit past 2 months old, but it was still decent, just not outstanding.

Bottle shared by Todd. I also got a few of these from Sean. Thanks to both of you guys! Served in a snifter.

A - Tan foam that is surprisingly dark for an IPA that settles to a partial cap, thick collar, and splotches of lace. Transparent golden body.

S - Great hop aroma with dank weed, citrus zest, and tropical fruit flavors; it's Mosaic hops alright. Seems a tad maltier than the Half Acre-brewed version, with a bit of sugary sweetness standing up to the hop assault. Still, it's quite good.

T - The taste follows suite, with a bit more brown sugar malt presence than the Half Acre version. Still, there's tons of potent hop character, with a plethora of grapefruit, tropical fruits, and zesty herb flavors.

M - Dry, medium body, with crisp, pleasant, moderate carbonation. Some lingering oily hops and resins, and no discernible alcohol.

D - A really nice IPA, but not quite as good as the version brewed at Half Acre. Still, it's excellent and a beer I'd happily drink on any occasion. Pretty easy to put down 22oz, especially with a friend.

Bottled 12/22/2014.

Ok IPA but expected more. A tame IPA with decent flavor but no lasting impression bitterness-wise.

a: clear amber/reddish copper w/nice off-white head and lacing.
s: a fresh (not overripe) fruit salad that i struggled to identify. after a few of these, i realized that peaches came through for me. some pine/resin underneath with sweet light caramel malt. this mosaic hop really threw me off, but in a good way. very different.
t: follows suit. very well balanced between the light caramel malt sweetness and smooth bitterness. hops are super juicy and fresh. very complex for a single hop beer.
m: medium body, well-carbed, nice, more-ish finish.
o: this stuff is growing on me. too bad, that much like permanent funeral, i probably won't see it again so that they can make jinx proof, pride n joy, and bruce. smh
