So since our first visit over two years ago, things have changed vis-a-vis the popularity: no longer is it possible to spend a quiet Saturday afternoon there as we discovered on a cold February day. That was really off-putting, but we did manage to score a table at lunchtime on a Wednesday as our first stop on Dulcie and Aylwin's Big Beer Adventure vol V. Not a lot has changed in two years, except the food has improved - like where in a bar are you going to get haricot verts, prosciutto and a poached egg? And don't forget the mussels. No need to say anything about the beer part.

This place is one of the best in America. Totally weird it's in Munster.

Our first visit to FFF was DLD, which made for an insane experience, like trying to get into a night club in Piccadilly Circus with bouncers and girls sneaking in saying they had to use the lav. It was complete mayhem but quite amusing. So when we returned a couple of weeks later we didn't quite know what to expect.

It was actually remarkably quiet in the late Saturday afternoon and all the tattoos and piercings had been replaced by fairly normal looking people. We were shocked to see that some were not even drinking beer! How come? As I mentioned on my blog at the time, it's because the food is really good; I mean shockingly good for a place like that. Not fine dining by any means but quality and fit for the beer. So locals go for the food but don't necessarily booze.

Beer of course incomparable, with their own offerings superbly balanced by several guests. You can't go wrong.

Most of the time one can get a decent table, although the logistics are a little strange - it just about overcomes the fact it's stuck in this industrial park in the middle of nowhere.

Only negative is the extremely loud deth metal music, but that's their thing, and if it helps them make great beer and food it's a small price to pay.

I was in Chicago so figured why not plop by FFF Distillery. The small Brew Pub was tucked off to the side. It was 10pm on a Friday night. Fairly busy. Around 50 people or so. The vibe was very relaxed. Vinyl records playing over surround-sound speakers. They had about 10 beers on tap. The Zombie Dust was EXQUISITE straight from the Mother's teet. 20oz pour for $5. Overall, fantastic experience. Highly recommended!

Hard to obtain unless you live in an early adopter Chicago neighborhood. Fortunately Nick Floyd lives a few blocks from me and always keeps a few six packs in the cooler at the corner store. Truely the best IPA I've ever had. They tried to sell me on Warpigs but in the end nothing else even compares to Zombie Dust.

3 Floyds is the Founders of NW Indiana. By that I mean they have a high quality product, a large and apparently loyal following, and when they release certain beers, it is an event. However, unlike Founders, 3 Floyds apparently is not in a hurry to expand. My wife and I paid a visit on a fairly quiet Wednesday afternoon, after an aborted trip a few months earlier when, at 1:30 on a Saturday afternoon, wait times approached 1 1/2 hours. As soon as we were seated, we understood why--the brewpub is way too small. A 100-person capacity may be a generous estimate. Also, the ambiance is not very welcoming. The heavy metal music didn't bother us, but it was loud enough that we had to practically shout at each other. There was some weird fantasy/horror movie playing on the TVs. And the whole place in general was dark and cold. There is no outdoor seating even though they have plenty of space. Their "gift shop" is just a counter where you can buy some cases of beer and a few t-shirts. It's almost as if they don't want people to hang out and relax.

That being said, 3 Floyds produces some excellent beers. Looking past the Zombie Dust, their menu is heavy on the IPAs but all the beers we tried were good. Their food menu is smallish and full of funky ingredients like pork cheeks, but the cheese curds we split were also good. Service was fine and prices seemed reasonable. We were glad we went but just can't get over how they could be bigger and more inviting (and just maybe make more money) if they wanted to.

First time I ever had Zombie Dust was when I was passing through Indiana here at this pretty dark dimly lit place. Service was good but I felt a little out of place as I didn't think I had enough tattoos or piercings on my body to fit in with the rest of the crowd. Call me old school, but yeah, just an odd place, still their beers are phenomenal, so I'll give them that. No food that day for me.

The place is packed, but it took twenty minutes for anyone to take our drink order. The food is top notch and worth the wait as I had their burger that was topped with pulled pork, coleslaw and onion straws. Also, you can't beat Zombie Dust on tap! I was surprised at the size and diversity of the beer selection as most of their beers are limited in stores.
