I was able to have a few beers here during my most recent visit to Portland.

Located very close to Portland State University, the patrons are exactly what you would expect from the location. They are a friendly bunch of undergrads, graduate students and what seemed to be a fair amount of professors and staff.

The place is large with several distinct sections and seems like a well-worn student beer hall. There is a nice terrace on one side that has some pretty good views of the surrounding hills.

They have a big selection of Rogue beers and I did see at least one guest tap. Beers were in top shape.

Service was a bit slow, but they were free with samples and friendly.

We only had some appetizers (which were good) but will rate the food next time I return.

The wife and I were meeting a long-lost friend of hers who works at Portland State University. She wanted to go to Starbucks and bingo, right next door there is a Rogue beer bar.

So we had to, of course. I don't know how long this place has been around but it already looks old, almost "dirty". It is quite big, almost massive and was not at all busy during Super Bowl Sunday 2014. The bar was full but only three or four tables were occupied, and there is a whole sitting section that was totally empty. There is a lot of Rogue merchandise and beer around the place for you to take home.

The food menu is pretty cool, better than your average bar menu, although the execution kind of falls flat. My Snake River kobe hot dog didn't taste that extraordinary and was expensive), and the wife ordered a beer-cheese soup that was alright but nothing to write home about. They were also out of the oyster shooter I wanted to try.

Service was very good, super attentive guy who took the time to navigate the beers with me and didn't miss a beat (maybe one or two, but that's it).

Around 20 beers on tap, all Rogue all the time: PSU IPA, PSU II Pale, Morimoto, Chocolate Stout, Imperial IPA, Beard Beer, Backman Rooibos plus six Rogue Farms. The beer menu is a little confusing because they list a lot of beers but the availability varies. I had a Big Ass Barrel Imperial Stout that was not very big or barrel-y.

Expensive, for sure. This is Rogue after all. And the area around PSU is so-so, unless you live, work or study there. If you do, this is a good stop.
