Located in Minneapolis' North Loop neighborhood (otherwise known as The Warehouse District), the most densely populated precinct in Minnesota, and adjacent to the downtown adult entertainment district, North Loop Wine & Spirits is ideal for the walk-up, urban consumer. And with only two parking spaces, you can understand why it depends on, and caters to, foot traffic.

Most of the store is devoted to wines, but NLW&S makes very good use of its limited beer space. The cooler is dominated by a constantly changing selection of craft beers. There is a modest, but reliably high-quality selection of bombers, as well.

What really sets this store apart is the staff, many of whom live in the North Loop, and all of whom are enthusiastic about the products they carry. Shopping at NLW&S feels like participating in the neighborhood. And if something new or interesting comes to town, I can inevitably get it here.

Of particular note are the Tuesday night beer tastings and the basement event space, which is used for tastings and classes. My first real exposure to beer aging was at one of their top-notch classes.

Selection is highly responsive to demand, and demand in this neighborhood, no doubt helped by the high-quality tastings, tends toward interesting beers.

A final note: Because of zoning, NLW&S is not able to sell individual 12-oz bottles/cans, which is a slight drawback when you are not sure if you want to buy something, but given the high number of panhandlers in the general area, this either keeps them out of the store or turns them into craft beer drinkers.

EDIT (2013-08-07) - There has been a high amount of turnover, and somewhat less focus on beer than in the past. Scores adjusted accordingly.

An eclectic little liquor store in the North Loop they have a decent selection, they get the hard to get brews, they are overpriced on brew by 10%. The owner is strange and indifferent she makes you feel like you are doing her a favor by spending money here. An uncomfortable feeling while paying more for beer is a formula i will not tolerate. Skip this place by all means go to Lunds or Whole foods just blocks away. An odd woman owns this place and makes you feel unwelcome.

I bought a coupon for North Loop from Crowd Cut that said it's not good for beer. I asked a woman working there if it is good for hard cider. She said yes. Then another guy said no but that they would have to let me use it because she said yes. Then the owner or manager said, right in front of me, "Nope. They can buy it. I'd still like to take their money." I felt that was pretty rude considering the situation and that I did pay them through the coupon. Also, hard cider is not beer. It is apple wine. I will never go back to North Loop Wine & Spirits.

A- Inside the store, it's a pretty cool place, being a renovated warehouse. The outside isn't rundown or anything but nothing says "This is a great beer place!"
Q- Pretty much all the beer is in coolers. All beer I've bought has been fresh.
Ser- Service is friendly, although if you want help you have to be pretty aggressive about getting help at times.
Sel- Good selection with pretty good emphasis on local/regional beers. Bomber selection is limited and mostly confined to Belgian styles.
Prices were pretty good, especially with $9.99 mix-a-six.
