Grey LadyGrey Lady

Brewed by:
Cisco Brewers Inc.
Massachusetts, United States

Style: Witbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The name "Grey Lady" comes from the nickname for the often-foggy island on which it is brewed. This hazy, Belgian-style Wit emits a complex nose with sophisticated notes.

12 oz bottle, no date, poured into a SA Perfect Pint

A - Pale, cloudy straw yellow with about a finger's worth of white head. Decent retention and a loose lace.

S - Light in the nose; hints of coriander, maybe a little clove.

T&M - Lighter bodied; feels almost a bit watery. Very light spicing with coriander being predominant. Very light lemon zest. I think the best thing I can say feel wise is that there is a light crispness that is somewhat refreshing, but there isn't enough carbonation and it ends up feeling a bit flat.

O - Really far too light to me. Not enough spicing, not enough citrus...feels rather watery.

Interestingly, The Grey Lady does have a kind of grey pallor to it ('pallor' used not so much out of artistic license, but more out of commonly misuse). It's golden, but with a dull cast. And the bright white head that rises readily above it makes a nice contrast. The head holds fairly well for the style, and it leaves some minor spots of lace in its wake.

More importantly, Cisco's Grey Lady offers something that many American versions of the witbier style don't - refinement! The nose expresses wheat malt with a hint of coriander. It's far from overly spicy, and it's certainly not tart and fruity, or even chalky with citrus rind or yeast. Rather, there's just a pleasant edge to awaken the nose in an otherwise basic beer. The body is light to medium, as it should be; and the pinpoint carbonation is delicate but effervescent enough to bristle the tongue. The flavor follows suit with the aroma, but there is a bit more fruitiness to it (mainly orange, with some minor lemon). Once again, however, it's kept to a minimum, and it acts as a part of the beer rather than its main focus. It's delicate and refreshing, with just enough residual fruit and spice left in the aftertaste to remind you that you're drinking something just a little bit more interesting than the standard fare. Worth trying. And based on personal experience, a great summer quencher!!!

Like a sophisticated older lady with grey hair. It IS grey in color. Very subtle smell/taste/texture. Don't drink with spicy thai food as I once made the mistake. It does take the heat off, but you do not get to enjoy the beer. Very subtle but pleasant, maybe with crackers and cheese, or vegetables, or just by itself.

Very strange beer, but if you like tea and broth (soup) you will love the uniqueness of this one. Slightly smokey even. Light like a rice beer. Definitely not the traditional wheaty heavy satisfying feeling after drinking. Great with vegetarian potsticker dumplings. Not with a burger and fries. That being said, it is still strangely satisfying, in the same way that regular beer is, and I keep coming back for more.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip that I'm told is more like a pokal.

Appearance: Pours a semi-foggy yellow with a two-finger bone white head. Lots of bubbles. Some lacing on way down. Nice looking beer.

Aroma: Citrus, coriander, spices, lemon, wheat are all present.

Taste: Taste follows the nose, but is slightly more subdued than I'd expected. It's kind of light and easy on the palate. Citrus and coriander come forward as it warms.

Mouthfeel: Somewhat light. Summery. I'd like a wee bit more body from a witbier, but not a deal breaker.

Overall: Nice little number from Cisco. Yet another beer I'd hand to Blue Moon Guy and be like, "Guy, try this instead."

The spice! *squinting Kyle Maclachlan face*

This beer is so neat, a real collision between present, pungent spice flavors, and a clean drinking belgian body. The first one was alright, but once I'd adjusted my expectations, has become a real favorite; hard to find local belgian styles, too, and this a good one. A beer out of time, but I recommend it.

In a pint glass this beer was a hazy pale gold color with a small white head. A pleasant citrus aroma, some fresh hay. Lemon taste, a bit of malt, then the beer just flattened out. Really blah mouthfeel, very bland. Not a very good wit. I won't be tryin this again.

Mini growler pour from the good ole boys at DeCicco's in Ardsley, NY.

A- This one pours a clouded yellowy/pineapple juice shade of tastyness. White head stuck around for quite a bit and then went to a moderate collar, low sheeting and respectable bits of lacing.

S- Lemon and more lemon in the nose

T- I love a nice citrus infused and crisp Wit and this one does nit disappoint. Loads of more citrus, mostly lemon, and some gooey pineapple notes as well. Yeasty, citric, wheaty. Refreshing and quite enjoyable stuff.

M- Yeah it feels good in my mouth

D- Nice wit, clean, crisp and well worth a try

Pours a fluffy two finger white head. This dissipates to a thin ring of lacing only, kind of disappointing. Smells of a big belgian, La fin du monde esque. Clove, banana, more ripe fruit, pears. Tastes pepery, light crystal sweetness, some banana, clove, cinnamon maybe. Thin thin bodied, medium carbing. A touch of lingering hop bitterness. Overall this is descent, very easy drinking and refreshing. Nice smell and good taste but the body hurts this quite a bit. I will pick this up again on a hot hot summer day and drink ice cold. $1.89 a single.

Appearance: Hazy straw like the sun trying to burn its way through an early morning fog. The head is surprisingly thin for a wit. Smell: Perfumey and spicy, citrus, white bread, traces of banana and wheat. Taste: Spicy, ginger, orange, wheat, hint of banana. Mouthfeel: Medium body and slightly above medium carbonation.
