BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Cisco Brewers Inc.
Massachusetts, United States | website

Style: Gose

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.40%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Gose is an uncommon style in modern times: an unfiltered wheat ale, brewed with a bit of salt. While salt seems like an unlikely ingredient, the result is a dry, spicy, lightly fruity, and flavorful beer.

I'm not sure sure if you could consider this a gose... The beer looks great, tastes great, and is very refreshing and is low in alcohol.... that being said, when I drink a gose, I don't usually expect an overwhelming flavor of hops. This beer is loaded with citrusy hop flavor, which is counterbalanced with a salty twang from the sea water, which I enjoyed, however, there was absolutely none of the sourness that I've come to love and expect from a gose. It's a good hoppy summer beer, but it's not a gose. In that aspect, I was disappointed.

Hazy, ruddy yellow, billowing white foam, spotty seafoam lacing.

Aromas of bland wheat and coriander, some perceptible salinity.

Way too salty. Bland wheat and coriander flavors, and what tasted like a tablespoon of salt in the bottle. It was like drinking ocean water by accident, extreme in all the wrong ways. Didn't finish this. Too unbalanced, and not something i'd ever try again.

look: 3.75 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3 | feel: 3 | overall: 3

Appearance: 1 inch head, high carbonation, bight yellow yellow in color, clear

Smell: salt and wheat

Taste: wheat, citrus hops, and salt

Mouthfeel: light body, sweet with light saltiness, medium-low carbonation

Overall: I find this beer to be in the middle of the pack as far as goses go. It tastes like a witbier with light salt. The salt taste was a lot lighter here than in other examples of the style that I have had. Not a bad beer, just not one of my favorites in the style.

rewery: Cisco Brewery
Beer: Island Reserve Gose (2013)

Appearance: Golden straw, cloudy. White head with plenty of lacing.

Smell: Citrus, salty, and some yeast?

Taste: Complex, salty finish with some bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Well balanced, perfect amount of carbonation.

Overall: certainly unique. Not sure how it stacks up to other in the same style, but it makes me curious to try more.

Cisco comes through with anther Single Batch Island Reserve that was released today at a Cambridge, MA, bar for the first time. Aside from the fact that it's not a true Gose, it's a very pleasant beer, made with local ocean water instead of salt. But that's not why it's not a true Gose.

Pours hazy pale yellow, cloudy, like a Wit, but a bit darker than the Grey Lady. There is no head to speak of but there is some lacing.

Nice briny whiff upfront, but it's fleeting, followed by a yeast punch. No hops on the nose, but very faint hints of spice. I'm guessing coriander, like its original form, the Grey Lady, but there's really not enough to discern. The aroma is the first dead giveaway that it is not a traditional German Gose--the aromas are more reminiscent of a Belgian Wit or a Saison.

The flavor profile is all Wit plus salt. Definitely can taste the sea water but it's completely inoffensive. This is followed by slightly bitter wheat note before the floral yeast opens up. The taste is distinctly Belgian, not German. Mild floral and citrus finish, with lingering wheat and mild spices (coriander) in aftertaste.

Body light but persistent. Moderate carbonation. Fairly dry and crisp with no discernible alcohol interference.

Really quite a nice summer-style beer. We were joking around with the brewery rep that this is a better (albeit saltier) version of the Grey Lady than the one in cans. This appears to be a fusion style, combining all the elements of a Gose with Belgian yeast and spicing. It would be quite unfortunate if this were only a single batch. This beer should make a regular summer appearance (hopefully long before August 1). I would like a more pronounced aroma in this beer, but it drinks nicely--it certainly kept everyone happy.
