Bottled 1/7/14, no. 004/850, which I didn't notice when I picked it up, oh well (from a 22oz bomber). Been sitting a while, but I loved the first one or two I had back when it was fresh (which I recalled being a burly whiskey-forward well-barrel-aged beer, in 12oz bottles, maybe they were '13 I don't recall). Poured beautifully, clear copper, with a nice fluffy few fingers of head, lots of lacing, and still a cap toward the end of the first glass. Interestingly enough, this has gone sour in the time its been on the shelf, like the same sort of sour in Funky Jewbelation which I'd just had a few days back. Oddly reminiscent. A little rye whiskey and oak on the nose and in the taste, but this thing is a full-on rye double-ipa sour these days. And it's kind of cool, though probably not anyone else's experience with this particular beer. The hops are muted but certainly still there, a little tongue-prickling when you hold it in your mouth before swallowing. Overall, just not what I expected out of this one, but not entirely in a bad way.

Drank back to back with the non-BA version. This monster pours copper in color with a big, creamy off-white head with good retention and lacing. The nose and palate were also quite similar featuring toasted malt, caramel, toffee and a massive boosy prominence that is delicious and enticing but also overpowers any of the subtle hops hints. Having said that, there is still a good bittering hop presence on the finish. This is a tasty/interesting brew.

Bottle: Poured a light clear amber color ale with a huge off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry bitter hops and rye whiskey notes actually works well together which is a first for me since I usually don’t dig barrel-aged IPA. Taste is a perfect mix between the dry caramel malt residual sugars with some dry bitter hops notes and the rye whiskey notes which are quite pronounced but do a good job of rounding the rough edges of this beer. Body is about average with good carbonation with light warming alcohol notes. This one drinks more like a barrel-aged barley wine with a touch of hops but very good nonetheless.

APPEARANCE - Transparent coppery red. 5-finger head that lasts awhile. Some lacing.

SMELL/AROMA/SCENT - Very aromatic. I could smell it from 3 ft. away. Strong piney, just a little sweet. Herbaceous.

TASTE - Piney, herbaceous, cloves, rye bread. ABV very well-hidden.

MOUTHFEEL/PALATE/TEXTURE - Light and dry, with very good carbonation for a high ABV brew. Well balanced.

OVERALL/DRINKABILITY - This is the Levy's Jewish Rye of IPAs. Magnificent resiny aftertaste that stays with you. A very drinkable ale. You can guzzle this one (if you dare).

A: color is a hazy amberish dark brown with thin quickly dissipating off white head.
S: has a great sweet smell to it due to the malt and the bourbon barrel aging, the bourbon gets more and more apparent as it warms, not much here for noticeable hoopiness, considering it's a double ipa.
T: tastes like a bold bourbon beer! has solid sweet - vanilla - caramel - boozy bourbon flavors, the hops are there but not in the forefront, somewhere in the mid-palate into the finish, also has some good malt backbone in the flavors along with some slight nuttiness and low/high booziness. Delish! I'd buy another bottle for the cellar if I didn't have to drive across the border to get it!
O.A. whatever you do don't judge this one before you let it warm up a good 45 minutes or more!!
