This beer is infected it taste like an infected barrel aged beer. Drain pour! I was so looking forward to this beer given Schmaltz pedigree with barrel aged human blockhead. On a positive note they nailed the color

Batch 001. Didnt even have to taste this to realize this is badly infected. Smells and taste horribly of acetic acid. Can't believe how many reviewers think the sour notes are "interesting" as this is clearly not intentional. I asked the brewery for a replacement or refund without response. I guess that means no more Shmaltz for me. What a loss.

Proceed with caution.....

I love barrel aged beers, bocks, malt bombs and honestly, Barrel Aged Human Blockhead was epic. I like schmaltz, so I bought 4 of these.
Last month, bottle 1 was hot and sweet . Tonight bottle 2 is sour. I fear we may have a problem, unexpected sour, dare I say [email protected]@n? Should not be tart at < 6 months post brewing.

Fingers crossed for other 2 bottles. I'm letting them ride. Hopefully we will avoid a wreck. Please

So, I usually don't read other reviews before writing my own, but when I saw a lackluster rating, I had to look. I think some reviewers must have had an infected batch. Mine, however, was thankfully wonderful. From a bomber, this still beer is clear and mahogany in color. The smell is all malt....crackers, brown bread, and a little nut scents. The taste is semi-sweet, warming, and had incredible malt flavors. Full in body and very enjoyable. I found this one to be a wonderful brew.

22 ounce bottle - Bullock's Wine & Spirits in Marietta, Georgia.

Appearance: Slips out a medium brown, everso slightly hazed body. Nearly two inches of bubbly, foaming suds.

Smell: There are some sweet-scented, caramelly malts but also a quick jolt of sourness with a raunchy, unforgiving tartness. Oh dear.

Taste: By the by, it's sour, acidic and still so raunchy with an unforgiving, unyielding dirtiness. Spoiled fruit juices. It's got an odd burn in there, too, once which heads all the way down leaving you to feel a bit soured yourself. With no redeeming qualities, it's a straight-up drain pour.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-plus carbonation.

Overall: Well, that was a complete waste of money. A BIG thumbs down, Shmaltz.

Bottled on 4/24/15 Batch#001.Pours into a half liter stein a deep garnet color with a thinner but well sustained light beige head atop.Bourbon, cherry, and light sour aromas, almost like sherry and bourbon together....Starts off with bourbon and then sourness wich hit me for a surprise then melding into toast and sweet alcohol, why the sourness?I have never had a doppelbock that was sour, barrel aged or otherwise. It has some good qualities but the sourness takes away from it in my opinion.

No...No...No... Schmaltz, why would you sell me a partially infected bock? It's getting pretty tart with some bourbon overtones. Disappointed that I bought this especially since Schmaltz has treated me so good before. I will eventually buy more of there stuff. I hope this was a one time fluke...

L: Pours brilliant chestnut under a persistent, clingy 2” tan foam collar.
S: Smells like a bourbon sandwich – fresh bread, some spice, vanilla and bourbon.
T: Starts big bready malt flavors and then the bourbon takes over. Rich complex malt flavors sweetened by kettle sugars.
F: Big full body, medium carbonation, clean and smooth with a slight alcohol warming.
O: One of the nicer things done to a used bourbon barrel.

On tap at Brewers Republic- reddish brown color, slight head., little retention. Nice fruity and vanilla aromas. Sweet, slightly acidic flavor, with a nice little vanilla and toffee burn on the back end. Thought it was a little thin for the style, would have been better with a bit more body. Overall, not a bad beer but probably won't be going back for this one.

The aroma is brown sugar, woody and oak.
The taste is super sweet, wood and heat.
The texture is soft.
It's nice.

Bottled 4/25/2015

Pours a chestnut-hued brown with 2+ fingers of tan head. Stays effervescent, a little hazed, stellar lacing and head retention

S: Raisins, figs

T: follows the nose, cakeyness & much dryness up front, a little vanilla as well. Dryness, figs, raisin & some leafy hops & booze as this warms. Finishes with woody hops, figs and dryness

MF: Fairly thick body, but enough carbonation to keep it on track

The almost one year of aging has probably taken some boozey edge off of this I'm guessing, not bad at all, but give me a good straight down the middle dopplebock any day

He'Brew's Bock Bock, Imperial American Bock lager aged in Bourbon Barrels. 9.2% ABV.

A: Over a finger of ever so slightly tan head. Slightly orange plum, with yellow in the dimple. Decent lacing. Slight sheeting.

S: Fairly deep barrel caramels, with a touch of... cinnamon? Light molasses, malted barley cereal, sweet bread. A pleasant combination of aromas.

T/MF: Slightly creamy. A good amount of funkiness. More molasses and grain. Faint cocoa. Hay. Faint sourdough finish. Bourbon doesn't seem to play a big role in the flavor. Quite interesting, nonetheless.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass.
