Beautiful ruby copper color with tons of thick off-white head with a long retention and leaving lots of laces.
Delicious aroma of grapefruit and pine with sweet toasted malts and hints of rye and honey.
Really bitter and malty taste with strong notes of piney hops, rye, and pepper. Hints of wood and resin.
Dry with an insistent bitter aftertaste. 10% ABV is seen nowhere.
Medium to full body with adequate carbonation.
Excellent double rye IPA, it does not carry the usual flaw of the style of being too sweet. This is a beer for the well-seasoned drinkers. Highly recommendable.

This had a nice scotchy aftertaste to it. Overall, I liked it a lot. This was the first RIPA that I remember having so I wasn't sure what to expect. The alcohol was definitely present, both in initial smell and overall taste. Nice head clung to the glass for a few sips and then slowly dissipated. Certainly worth the price ($11.99 for 4 pack) and will consider buying it again.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Lagunitas mason jar
From: Pacific Liquor at Renaissance at North Park (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $2.99
Purchased: June 28, 2013
Consumed: June 28, 2013
Misc.: N/A

Poured a dark mahogany color with 4-to-5 fingers of khaki tan head that actually overflowed over the mason jar. Very thick caramel tan lacing on the sides. Great retention all the way down.

Smelled rye hops, iced tea, licorice, molasses, caramel and honey.

Tasted bitter rye hops right from the get-go, followed by iced tea, molasses and licorice. Very bitter and the alcohol’s 10 percent is not well hidden at all. Thick, grainy, earthy, heavy, malty.

Medium-to-full body. Creamy-to-sticky texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Long, bitter finish.

Really was not a fan of this beer. I would never have it again on purpose.

For such a huge beer, it had only moderate bitterness and the high alcohol level was backgrounded extremely effectively. I had this on tap at Yard House in Cincinnati. A great, great beer well worth getting a pint (and going to a Reds game very happy).

Appearance: Very interesting color for a beer, a deep brown almost ruby color. Pours with a relatively healthy tan head. The initial appearance definitely piqued my curiosity.

Smell: The high alcohol content was apparent from the smell. Also picked up the hops quite a bit.

Taste: Immediately noticed both the bitterness and the alcohol similar to the smell, although the alcohol was less apparent in the aftertaste and the hops much much more prevalent. I was surprised how much the taste changed over the course of a sip, it finished very dry and bitter. Aftertaste is almost like a different beer than the initial taste.

Mouthfeel: Very, very dry beer.

Overall: This might just not be my beer style, but I've had a number of high ABV beers and found the alcohol was not masked in the smell or initial taste. Also very dry and hoppy and I didn't detect a lot of other flavors, although I need to ponder it some more as I finish this beer. Might just be having a hard time characterizing it but was not a standout for me.
