I reviewed this beer months ago on a napkin, and only now have I mustered up the motivation to actually submit it.

A: Mahagony in color, and quite clear. Head retention is good, leaving a frothy film atop the brew.

S: Rich aroma is sweet and full of molasses and prunes.

T: As sweet as can be without being cloying. The flavors promised in the nose came through wonderfully, with notes of prunes, rum, and molasses.

M: Very full and heavily carbonated. The body is a touch sticky, leaving a coating on the tongue.

D: A really interesting brew. I can't tell whether the dubbel or the bock pull through more, but this exhibits the best qualities of both. I am impressed with the creativity displayed, and equally impressed that it turned out so well.

Review from 1/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a dark red brown amber with a one finger light tan head that dissipated rapidly to a thin ring around the glass. Aroma of dark dried fruit, lots of sweet and caramel malt. Flavor presents a strong caramel malty backbone with nice date and dried fruit. Creamy medium body. I liked the date flavors in this beer and liked it the best of the series. I'd like to see this one brewed again.

Bottle picked up off the shelf for 5.29 at a local bottle shop.
Guess it's 3 years old now. Bottle poured into a tulip glass.

A- Pours a deep amber color with 2 fingers of dark tan head that is dissipating rather quickly and leaving no lacing on the glass.

S- Huge dark fruit aromas, very sweet smelling malt from the Doppelbock. Caramelized brown sugar. Some booziness.

T- Very sweet, caramelized, sugary figs take over here. It is tasty. Rich sweetness turns into a pleasant breadiness from the Doppelbock. Doppelbocks are "liquid bread" right? Interesting combination of flavors. Very rich and sweet.

M- Nice medium body, not too much carbonation here. A little on the low side. Nice warming feeling from the ABV.

O- Interesting. Glad I picked it up. It is very sweet. I think the Doppelbock is the major player here. Didn't get much of the Dubbel. Then again this beer sat on the shelf for 3 year before I purchased it. This is a sweet, rich, enjoyable beer.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating (some time in 2009 though). Pours slightly hazy reddish brown color with a fairly dense 1-2 finger light khaki head with good retention that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Some slight lacing on the glass. Aromas of plum, fig, date, caramel, molasses, biscuit, toasted malt, nuttiness, light chocolate, clove, and yeast spices. Some nice and well balanced aromas with good strength and complexity. Taste of big prune, fig, caramel, molasses, toasted malt, biscuit, chocolate, nuttiness, clove, and yeast spices. Lingering notes of dark fruit, caramel, molasses, biscuit, chocolate, and light spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Nice flavor balance and complexity; with no cloying sweetness. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a nice creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming after the finish. Very smooth to drink for 7.8%. Overall this is a very excellent brew from Shmaltz. Nice complexity and balance; and very smooth to sip on. I really enjoyed this one.

To all those who cellar's this beer... Suckers! I picked up this hella old bomber at my local House of 1,000 beers for 3 bucks. If it's as good as the reviews I may pick up another.

A - Omg some damn fine carbonation for a beer over 3 years old. A 1/4 inch of opaque colored head atop some dark hazy brown beer.

S - One of the better doppelbocks I have smelled. Really love the fig smell in this it really gives it a sweet deep dimension to the "dark fruit" side of the style. Can't wait to sip it!

T - Ow it's very sweet and balanced well with the caramel malts and hops. I can't believe how well this beer overtakes the 2010 grape in all aspects! Wow is this good/sweet and delicious!

M - For almost 8% it's damn smooth. Age has treated this one well giving it a balanced sweet/hop ratio.

Overall I will have to stop at the house tomorrow and pick up at least 3-4 more bottles. It drinks just as good as the pomegranate but with less bittering/drying aspects. Jealous of those who have the "year of the fig" 2008 that one must be amazing!
