A: This poured a nearly opaque black with hints of brown, with moderate tan head.
S: It smelled amazing, like strong rye and oak, with rich caramel and toffee and dark chocolate and some tobacco and coffee.
T: It tasted like tons of rye and oak and caramel, with some dark chocolate and toffee and tobacco and vanilla and sweetened coffee. It had a smooth bittersweet aftertaste.
M: It was thick with some carbonation. Very nice.
D: This was a fantastic beer. Better than any of the other Jewbelations, and I really liked most of those! The rye barrel aging really added a lot, even though some of the hops and other Jewbelation complexities weren't noticeable. Huge body and very well hidden alcohol made this so easy to drink. But please sip and savor this gem. Maybe best fresh, but could definitely keep for a while too. Highly recommended.

Note: I had this in the same evening with Black Ops, Bourbon Angel's Share, Bourbon Old Stock, and Consecration. But this may have been my favorite of the night.

Reviewing the Jewbelation Vertical (Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged Blend) from Shmaltz Brewing Company (He'Brew) out of Saratoga Springs, New York. This strong ale is a blend of He'Brew's eight, ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteen and fourteenth anniversary beers, which was subsequently barrel aged in 6 year rye whiskey barrels. I have been sitting on this bottle for a few years.

2013 vintage bottle served in a GLASS and enjoyed on 02/24/13 to celebrate the Oscars. Review is from iPhone notes.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown color that is almost black in color. Not opaque, with amber highlights atop and bottom when held up to the light. A finger-plus of beige head off the pour. Good lacing and retention. 4.25/5

Smell: Figs, fudgey chocolate cake, desserty vanilla, brown sugar, and non-boozy bourbon. Toffee, leather and caramel too. 4.5/5

Taste: Caramel, toffee, vanilla, molasses and cocoa throughout with a touch of alcohol warmth in finish. There is a nice kick from the rye too. Tons of toffee and fig in finish. Dark fruit and plum are also present. Excellent medley of malty flavors and barrel character! 4.5/5

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, medium carbonation. Quite malty with a good sweetness, but it's not a "sweet" beer. A touch over carbonated, but that is nothing that letting the beer sit out on the counter for 30 minutes can't solve. 3.5/5

Overall: Easily He'Brew's best beer. If the carbonation was a little lower this would have been even better. I wonder if they'll ever attempt to replicate this beer by blending and barrel aging more recent vintages. I am glad I have a few more bottles of this, as it is aging wonderfully.

Cost: $12.99 for a 22 oz (bomber) bottle.

A - dark chestnut brown, impenetrable to the harshest light, a thin beige sticky head sits atop

S - holy bourbon! rich, big bourbon aromas, the dark sweetness rounds out a robust aroma oaky, vanilla, hoppy nose

T - darkness abounds; dark sweetness - vanilla, toffee, burnt caramel, molasses, brown sugar, - dark fruits - black cherries, raisins, dates, plums, and such, and all this sits above a great hoppy oakiness

M&D - sublimely complex and layered, supremely blended, a slight alcohol burn at the end was warming and well received, but may turn some off, an amazing beer, makes me wish WilliBrew got more than 5 gallons.

Deep mahogany brown, body is opaque. Three finger fluffy sand colored head. The head recedes slowly leaving spotty moth eaten lacing clinging to the walls of the glass.

Rich brown malt aroma up front complimented by a pleasant rye whiskey characteristic. Bready and fig malt characteristics are prominent up front. Subtle brown sugar aroma set behind. The rye whiskey is very well integrated. Pleasant vanilla aroma provides some cohesion

The flavor displays much more depth than the aroma. Bready malt and molasses flavors are contrasted by a brighter fruit characteristic. There is a bit of raisin and plum flavor which provides some much needed complexity. The rye whiskey is a bit more assertive than in the nose but still very well integrated. Soft oak and vanilla flavors accompanied by a pleasant warmth.

Full bodied beer. The carbonation is slightly higher than I would expect making the mouth feel a bit lighter on the tongue. Very soft and smooth texture. Moderate finish, the flavor does not linger on the tongue as long as one would imagine.

Vertical Jewbelation is a seriously overlooked beer. A barrel aged beer that hits the mark in each category should seriously garner more attention. Very easy to drink. Rather enjoyable, multiple pours are certainly welcomed. For the price and availability this beer is hard to beat. Hats off to He'brew.

Batch No. 2, Bottled 12/1/2010

Body is a clear but very dark brown with a tinge of red. Pours easily to a half inch head in a Gouden Carolus chalice. Head dissipates quickly to a ring around the glass, and not much lacing.

Aroma is malty with dark fruit and rye whiskey.

Taste is very concentrated with charred malt, caramel, vanilla, chocolate, espresso, maraschino cherries, prunes/raisins, rye whiskey, and hops. In the finish, there is a dry burn on the tongue, in part from the charred malt. Overall, this tastes like biting into a Belgian truffle--there are so many different strong confectionary flavors going on.

Body is full but not viscous, and lots of little bubbles gives this a somewhat creamy mouthfeel.

This is a beer that is strong in taste. It sort of fools you that it is also strong in alcohol, but the rye whiskey flavor contributes to that. It is somewhat strong in ABV at 10.5%, but it tastes even stronger than that. Well, it is good that a beer can taste stronger in alcohol than it is, but a bomber of this stuff will hit you.

Vertical Jewbelation pours a dark chocolate fudge color. It's almost opaque, but light reveals burgundy highlights at the center and edges. A soft, tan head caps it off. It stands about a finger tall before falling quickly. A moderate web of sticky lace was left clinging to the glass.

The nose is pretty good, but is lacking a little in the strength department. It's malty up front, but doesn't smell very sweet. Caramel and bittersweet dark chocolate are appreciated. There is a hint of whiskey, but it's subtle and complementary. I like that pretty well. It's restrained, and not overdone at all. Secondary notes of oak, vanilla, coconut, and light coffee are noted. Alcohol is blended quite well, and doesn't come through strong at all.

The flavor is definitely a couple of notches above the nose. It has a very diverse malt base that features caramel, dark chocolate, and roasted malts. It's a strong combo. The barrel aging imparted a very nice, light whiskey flavor that complements the malt base perfectly. I have no idea how long it was in barrels, but it was the right amount of time. Oak and vanilla are secondary, but add quality depth and character. Other flavors include coconut, roasted coffee, and very subtle molasses. Alcohol is noted, but doesn't come through too strong. It's not warming or hot at all. Finishes malty with a touch of coffee and whiskey. Damn...this is very impressive.

Vertical Jewbelation has a light medium body that feels too thin. Carbonation is very light, but it still feels too thin. It is nearly smooth though. Drinkability is good. I like the flavor quite a bit, and it goes down easy. It is a bit strong, but this bomber is disappearing quickly nonetheless.

I don't pick up beer from Shmaltz Brewing Company very often, but this is one instance in which I'm very glad that I did. Vertical Jewbelation is a blend of all seven Jewbelation recipes that was aged in Sazerac whiskey barrels. The result is a winner. Yeah, the nose could use more strength and more body would help immensely. But, this is very good beer nonetheless. If you see a bottle, grab one. I suspect you'll be skeptical (as I was), but this is good stuff.

(22oz bottle from El Cerrito Market and Liquor). Pours a dark brown-almost black color-with chunky 2 finger tan head that gives some lacing. Lots of small carbonation bubbles. Aroma is rye whiskey, wood, vanilla, and spices. Taste is sweet with some peppery rye whiskey bite and bit of alcohol heat. Full bodied with a sticky texture. Surprisingly dry finish with some spices. Ok, but alot of flavors going on here.

Just over a year old since bottling. Pours a near black color with just some hints of brown at the edges. The head is short but dense and sturdy; settles into a light ring.

The aroma is quite malty as expected. Notes of toasted bread and pumpernickle. There is a raisin/prune sweetness to it. The rye whiskey aging left a light aroma but mainly added some oak and vanilla notes. More malty than anything else.

The taste is of a very smooth thick malt. Very bready with notes of toast, pumpernickle, and lightly charred wood. There is some scorched caramel and raisin sweetness but it is kept in check, not like some in this verticle series. There is a light oak and whiskey flavor from the barrel which blends nicely with the body of the beer. A touch of spice from the rye whiskey as well. No big bold flavors, they all blend in nicely.

The feel is thick and chewy. The body is broken up by some fizzy carbonation; perhaps a bit too strong for the style but I don't mind so much. It is sweet mostly throughout the palate but does finish with a roasted malt bitterness. Definitely finishes sticky. The ABV is nicely hidden.

A malt lovers dream. Probably the most malty beer I have drank outside of some stouts. It is very smooth despite the carbonation and has a good balance between sweet and bitter. The barrel flavors could use a boost and the beer could be less sticky and carbonated but I am nitpicking. Very nice brew and a great way to finish off a challenging verticle.

On-tap at Flying Saucer served in a tulip glass a deep opaque black with a decent light tan head that diminishes to a ring and leaves slight lacing on the glass. Aroma is a bit of dark malts and a hint of oak. The taste is a nice complex blend of dried fruits, dark malts, burnt caramel and oak in the initial before a nice surprising kick of bitter hops in the finish. The beer is on the heavy side of medium with decent carbonation, this one is certainly a sipper. Although I was hoping for more from the rye whiskey barrels, this is still a very enjoyable beer, one I would certainly have again.

A: The beer is very dark brown in color and poured with a thin creamy tan head that died down but left a thick ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass and thick lacing in the center.
S: There are moderately strong aromas of whiskey from the barrel aging in the nose.
T: The taste is very similar to the smell and has lots of flavors of whiskey and some hints of alcohol, brown sugar, dark fruits, maple and roasted malts. The taste of rye is evident in the finish.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied and somewhat syrupy yet smooth on the palate with a low to moderate amount of carbonation. There is warming from the alcohol in the finish.
D: This is a beer that needs to sipped given its alcohol content but despite the strong smell and taste of whiskey it's quite drinkable because these are not overpowering.

Reddish-brown with crimson edges. Thin head recedes to a crown.

Musty, oaky aroma. Integrated whiskey -bals and alcohol, quite a bit of chocolate and raisin. Vinous with sweet caramel.

Musty -bals, whiskey and raisin on the palate. A bit like a Belgian quad. Chocolate, mellow booze, quite a bit of tannin in the finish, lingering vinous/dark fruit flavors. Good stuff, probably the best beer I've had from Shmaltz.

A:Super deep brown color. Tons of mocha colored head on the initial pour. Excellent lacing head retention for a barrel aged beer. Tons of lacing as well.

S: The nose is classic Schmaltz. Subdued hops.The barrel is there but it is not that huge rye presence I was expecting. Touch of oak. Little warming booze in the nose. Touch of chocolate.

T: Just a really nice beer. I am a fan of blending beers and this reminds me of something I would come up with. Tons of complexity. Hoppy. Malty as hell. The barrel ties it all together. As it warmed up the barrel became more apparent Finishes with some caramel and a nice warming feeling from the barrel.

M: So smooth and creamy. Not thin at all like some barrel aged beers get. Just nice.

D: I don't know about aging this one. It is so nice right now and to be honest I could have used a little more barrel. Just a ton of complexity. They need to keep their barrel program going.

incredibly impressed with this one here. i grabbed this bomber from gbx for 11.49 as i did not wanna waste time on the box. served into a snifter.

nice ark brown pour has some light touches of reddish color around the edges and the back and and a decent head that seemed to last for a few good moments before settling back down with a thin coating of lacing on the sides. aroma of deep sugary malts. brown sugar, hints of dark fruits, a nice touch of vanilla and oak round it and the perfect balance is struck here. amazing how smooth and complex this is compared to some of the other in the series which seemed to come off hot, and just out of sorts. a bit of sting as it hits the belly but the lasting flavor is that of smooth, and creamy sugars that blend well with a light whiskey and fruity flavor.

really well done here. a very interesting use of the barrel for sure and finally i think they have gotten this right. just release this every year.

A - There's a pleasant finger of reddish tan foam that settles to a thick ring, leaving behind minimal lace. The body is a dark transparent near-black color with ruby highlights when held to the light.

S - Zesty rye, milk chocolate, oak, vanilla, a hint of alcohol and grain whiskey. Lightly roasted grains. Gets better as it warms up, as it's initially understated.

T - Taste again is heavy on rye zest and bite. Lots of caramel, cocoa, and roasted grains. Surprisingly unmuddled considering this is a blend of 7 beers - actually displays more consistency than the beers on their own.

M - Medium bodied, smooth texture, zesty carbonation, and a dry tannic finish. There's a bit of warmth, but not as much as I'd expect from this sort of beer.

D - Probably not worth $13, but pretty good nonetheless. I'd have this again if I saw it on-tap somewhere, or if it was available in 12oz bottles again.

Aroma is - WOO WEE, strong, malty, woody, with an alcohol underpinning and yeasty and floral hints. It pours a pretty chocolaty brown that is opaque save at the edges, with a fairly good beige head. Flavor is - not for the faint of heart! Quite strong, it is woody, malty, a little honey sweet, slightly fruity, slightly nutty, with a good alcohol edge. Texture is smooth and edgy, leaving a woody and tingly finish.

I am feeling very fortunate to get this beer. Picked up a Bomber for around $10
Poured rough and put away wet into the glass creating a couple inches of light brown froth that sits there far longer then I want it too because I just want to drink it. :)
Leaving a modest cap of whipped topping consistency head and all around the glass coatings of lace.

Color is a very dark brown, not transparent and not really glowing and not reaching black.
Aroma is sweet delicious malt bomb extravaganza. Dark fruits, plenty of sweet caramel laced with burnt sugars, no heat at all, and a small amount of oaty malted milk ball aroma. A+ aroma for sure.
Smooth silky feel with mild amounts of carbonation, but present to balance the creamier feel of the beer.
Taste is much like aroma with more of a burnt sugar flavor, touch of Cinnamon and loads of malt. Not overly sweet either and balanced by a burnt sugar/ roasted malt flavor that bitters into the finish and becomes fairly pine like.

This is one amazing beer, it woo'ed the hell out of me. I want more!

Pours black with a tan 2 finger creamy head that leaves a little lacing.

Smell is bready malts, whiskey, dark fruits, oak and vanilla

Taste is like the nose, except whiskey is more pronounced. Some alcohol warming comes through. Did not pick up any rye in either the nose or taste.

Nice creamy mouthfeel with light carbonation.

A very drinkable beer, considering the ABV. The alcohol is present in the taste, but still a pleasure to sip.

A very good beer from Smaltz, worth seeking out.

Was fairly impressed by this. I expected it to be way boozy and out of balance. But it was actually very nice.

Pours from a 22oz bottle into a snifter at room temp. Dark brown pour, tan head. Nose has great rye barrel aromas over big roasty malts, caramel, toffee and dark fruits. Taste also has a well balanced rye whiskey barrel presence over a nice malty strong ale. Medium body drinks a bit hot.

22oz bottled December 1, 2010. Over 2 years old. Served at cellar temperature. Purchased from the beer cellar at Beverage World.

Pours very dark brown to black with a two finger brown head that settles to a small creamy cap and leaves a bit of lacing behind.

On the aroma, the whiskey hits you first and foremost, really nice, then it’s just layers of malt complexity, chocolate, molasses, vanilla, oak, coffee, toffee, overripe dark fruits of dates, figs, plums and raisins, some sinus-clearing alcohol. Excellent strength.

Flavor is amazing. Whiskey, vanilla and oak, dates, figs, plums, chocolate, coffee, molasses, fairly sweet, moderate bitterness, still some alcohol heat on the finish. Very complex and rich.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, sticky, creamy, good carbonation.

Very complex, flavorful, aromatic and enjoyable. Will need to snag at least one more bottle to tuck away for a while longer.

Stopped by the Brick Store Pub tonight. Some of the bartenders were giving samples of of this brew to each other. Everyone seemed to like it, so I asked for one.

Poured into a tulip glass. Dark, deep mahogany color. Ample, frothy head.

Smell is sweet, vanilla, and a bit boozy.

Taste is nice. I like high ABV beers, but I'm not big on boozy tasting beers. So I wasn't sure how this would be. This brew brings just enough booziness for someone like me to enjoy. Rich, dark malts, a bit chocolaty. A hint of bourbon. Vanilla notes. Mild sweetness. Although it has a somewhat high abv, it's incorporated nicely into the rich flavors of this brew, so as to not be overbearing.

An excellent sipping brew to be savored. If only I had sipped it a little slower, much to my surprise, I could have enjoyed it with Mr. Cowan, who showed up at the Brick Store about 10 minutes after I finished this brew! A really cool, down to earth guy responsible for an excellent brew! What a night!
