22oz bottle poured into a teku, bottle is about 3 years old at this point

A- pours dark brown, almost black with a creamy and frothy khaki colored head that retains long after the pour, leaving some nice lacing behind

S- very smoky aroma, almost rauchbier-like, smoked peat, smoked meat, chocolate, toasted grains, hints of caramel and toffee

T- sweet and malty up front with notes of chocolate cake with chocolate icing, caramel/toffee, faded traces of hop bitterness, alcohol, smoked malt, smoked meat and coffee on the linger

M- heavy body with low carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel and a thick and chewy finish, just a hint of alcohol warmth on the linger, perfect mouthfeel

O- I never had this fresh, but I imagine that it couldn't be nearly as good as a 3 year old body. The ABV is hidden brilliantly with a perfect mouthfeel

Aged 2 years and delicious. The booze has settled and the maltiness is decadent.

Thanks Darrell.

Dark brown coffee body with a small collar. Aromas of malt, booze, cocoa, caramel, hops, chocolate. Sweet and syrupy. Big time booze presence and hot finish. Bold flavor, if you like being assaulted. Best split several ways.

Strong aroma is malty, woody, a little syrupy. Pours a deep coffee brown with a fairly thick, if not too persistent tan head. Flavor has molasses, roast malt and woody hops notes with more than a hint of miso - and an alcohol bite like an angry pit bull. It is on the sweet side, but not grossly sweet. Texture has very firm, oily, syrupy body, though fizz level leaves a bit to be desired. Whoa, it’s already hit me like a speeding MARTA bus! Finish is lip-smacking, woody, malty, syrupy. A perfect beer to drink on the first day of Hanukkah, even if you’re not Jewish. Well, I have some good friends who are Jewish, and that’s no lie.

This guy sat in my cellar for a few years, held up pretty good. Pretty malty balanced bitter, and no vinagary barleywine flavor that you might expect from an aged beer. Totally hasn't fallen off yet.

Pours a very dark brown, settles into the glass with a black body and a big, foamy light brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, cocoa, dried dark fruits, hints of bitter hops and coffee. Lots of toasted malt, roasted malt, bitter burnt hops, bitter chocolate, pretty potent booze presence. Body is thick and syrupy, sticky and sweet, medium-low carbonation and a slight alcohol burn. Overall this one is a big, boozy sipper. It's held up pretty well for being a couple years old.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled in 9/2012. Pours dense pitch black color with a 2 finger dense dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big chocolate, cocoa, molasses, toast, toffee, dark bread, raisin, prune, leather, tobacco, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted/bready malt, dark fruit, and earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, toast, dark bread, raisin, prune, leather, tobacco, light char, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of roast/char/herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, toast, dark bread, raisin, prune, leather, tobacco, light char, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and balance of dark/roasted/bready malt, dark fruit, and earthy hop flavors; with a nice roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and no cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and very full bodied; with a very creamy, slick, and lightly syrupy/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a moderate warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent strong ale. All around great complexity and balance of dark/roasted/bready malt, dark fruit, and earthy hop flavors; and smooth to sip on slowly for the huge ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
