Served in a gold lipped Alpirsbacher .5 liter glass at "Maulwurf" pub in Stuttgart.

A- Bright gold, almost surprisingly pale. Thin head, but good carbonation is present.

S- Wonderful hoppy aromas with a little touch of cracker/bready malt coming through.

T- A spicy hop flavor mingles with all the general export lager flavors. No unpleasant aftertase notes at all. Perhaps it's that "famous brewing water" from the Black Forest.

M- Smooth, slightly astringent, almost a pils hoppiness, but not quite. Very very quaffable. 3-4 of these could be consumed very quickly with little effort.

An excellent, slightly unusual example of the style. Worth trying no matter what your preference.

A: Thin pee yellow with a little carbonation and hardly a head.

S: Heavy but slightly sweet malts. Slightly metalic.

T: Sweeter than the smell and the malts aren't as powerful. There is bitterness but it's sort of canceled by the sweetness, leaving a nice middle flavor.

M: Average. Moderate sting, medium body.

D: Pretty good beer. Well rounded, but not outstanding.

Thanks to Acme for this one!
Served in a tall fluted mug at Resi's Bierstube (happy 50th to Resi's).

Spezial pours a hair of a shade darker gold than the Pils, though against the light the two could have been twins. Brilliant clarity and amply carbonated. Tight cap of white foam on top that leaves behind concentric drippy rings of delicate lacing.

Aroma is all grain husk, mellow and simple, clean.

Taste is more complex, grain and mellow malt, light noble hop spiciness becomes dry and lightly bitter in the aftertaste. Subtle clean flavor. Medium bodied and smooth across the palate. Not as hopped as the Pils, though it still has a higher than average hop presence for a German lager. Pleasantly crisp, smooth, and effortless to drink.

Review: Bottle of Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu Spezial: ABV: 5.2%

Using the soft pure brewing water from the Black Forest.

Looks fantastic on pour, very clear golden yellow colour on show.

Despite the photo, the head dies a quick death, very flat, which is a little disappointing

Some slight carbonation,

Apart from shit head, it looks good..

Had a very nice beery smell, very good, very tinty on the nose, smelling of grains, nice sweet smelling malts with some lemon citrus...

A smooth light crisp drink, not too much to taste,

Bit sour, bit creamy,

Some malts

Any taste is felt in the aftertaste, with a hoppy bitterness which is manageable,

But overall a very light and smooth drink, but nothing amazing, ok......

This brew pours quite nicely. There is about two fingers thick of pure white cranium, and the body is pure gold with crystal clear clarity. Lacing sticks well to the glass all the way to the finish of this half liter serving.

Aroma qualities noted are lemony hops, with fresh cut hay. There is a mild sweetness detectable from the malt. This is definitely on par for the style.

The taste is lemony up front, and fades into a malty sweetness of lightly toasted bread like qualities. The finish is a little off with a biting tobacco ending.

This is somewhat light in body, but no dull at all. Also, this is very thirst quenching as well. There is a slight warm finish to this, which is odd with the moderate ABV.

Overall this is a decent beer, and again, it is in line with the style. The lady salesman claimed it falls in the Export category vice a Munich Helles.

Light yellow, head fades quickly with little lacing (glass was not fully dry, possibly a factor). Could possibly have poured it more agressively - there's a lot of carbonation.
Taste: initially hoppy with sweet malt coming strongly through high in the roof of the mouth, sweetness kept in check by lemony hops. Finishes nicely: peppery and slightly bitter. Aftertaste is a little sweet.

I always find with reviews that I need a second bottle to tease out the tastes, but only had one of these. I enjoyed it - would get it again.

Enjoyed the Pilsner from this brewery very much -- let's see how the Helles goes down.

A -- Clear, light gold with a firm white head that holds up well.

S -- Bready, yeasty malt with spicy hops back and some light citrus.

T -- Lightly sweet, bready malt up front with spicy hops in good balance. Finish is bready with a touch of the same yeastiness from the nose. Aftertaste is spicy hop bitterness.

M -- Mouthfeel is soft to crisp with a light-medium body.

O -- A very good example of the style. You can tell the Helles and Pilsner are cousins with similar malt and hop character. I usually enjoy Helles more than Pils, but I think the Pils from Alpirsbacher is just a little more satisfying and to-style. I'd still pick up another of these if I saw it.

This is very much atrue to style helles - very pale blonde not bad but uninspiring

Smells surprisingly hoppy

There is a lot of hops and overtones of some malt in the taste

Mouthfell is true to style refreshing

Goes down very easily and is more satisfying than others

The beer with the "famous brewing water", my favourite when in the Stuttgart area of Germany. Goes down the throat very smoothly, no undesired "side effects". Distinct pleasant bitterness. for me at par with ROTHAUS which also is from the Black forest. At Xmas it is of course the ALPIRSBACHER WEIHNACHTSBIER!
