Style: Rauchbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Schlenkerla Smokebeer Wheat is an ale with light smoky aroma. As Bavarian wheat beers, it is being brewed with a mixture of both barley malt and wheat malt. The portion of barley malt is hereby a classic Schlenkerla smokemalt, while the wheat malt remains unsmoked. Served unfiltered with its natural haziness, Schlenkerla Wheat reaches its full aroma through bottle fermentation with fine top fermenting yeast.

For the beer review, MJ's 1999 "Guide" gave high praise at 3.5 stars of 4 and said this dark weizen "is deliciously fragrant in its smokiness. The flavors seem less reminiscent of beech than applewood or mesquite."

If you enjoy food pairings that seem odd in theory, but taste unbelievably good... then Schlenkerla has a treat for you. The versatility of these beers are best described by Garrett Oliver in his "Brewmaster's Table" page 343. Smoked, slightly spiced foods are a particularly good accompaniment from kitchens around the world. A very interesting twist from the typical pairing of local kitchen and local beers.

I had this Weizen with a seared vegetable sandwich with spicy arugula leaves from a Rick Bayless kitchen (you know, the guy with the PBS series "Mexico: One Plate At a Time.") As much as I have experimented with these beers and spicier food, this pairing was unique. I'm guessing that since the wheat is not smoked, this beer was less smokey and the food was less spicy so it all stayed in balance. Whereas, the other Schlenkerla beers have more smoke and, to keep in balance, the food needs to be spicier.

At least, that is the theory. For proof, I'll have to experiment some more !

500 ml bottle poured into a tankard.

Appearance: A muddy, chestnutty brown with a big off-white head that sticks around.

Aroma: Smoked gouda, wood chips, orange rind, dark malt, wheat.

Taste: Big smoky flavor, though not as thick with smoke as the marzen version. Wheat malt and orange peel notes are there.

Mouthfeel: Earthy, thick for a wheat beer. Very substantive.

Overall: A fine beer, but not as transcendent as the marzen version, which seems less adulterated by the wheat presence.

From elcervecero. In Bavaria glass. Playing South Park Stick of Truth. Good aroma. Cant say that Ive liked its taste but didnt have to thrown it to the sink. Maybe im getting used to smoked ones or maybe this is better than others

500 ml bottle (exp. 08/2016), in a glass mug. Medium body, high drinkability. Well balanced. Great combination of roasted malts and a still present wheat beer character.
