Schlenkerla Smokebeer Wheat is an ale with light smoky aroma. As Bavarian wheat beers, it is being brewed with a mixture of both barley malt and wheat malt. The portion of barley malt is hereby a classic Schlenkerla smokemalt, while the wheat malt remains unsmoked. Served unfiltered with its natural haziness, Schlenkerla Wheat reaches its full aroma through bottle fermentation with fine top fermenting yeast.

Pours nicely, frothy if poured too fast, good head throughout.

Aroma is smokey and sweet, smelling smoked campfire and some sweet malty.

Taste is classic, I've only had a few Rauchbier's but the flavor is great; the aftertaste is superb with accents of smoked baby mozzarella or cheddar or the like; Gouda maybe....the flavor upfront is sweet. Carbonation good.

Personally I don't want this beer often but with ribs, smoked meat, ribs, cheeses you just can't go wrong, give a try under these circumstances

Out of their big 3 Rauchbier's, this particular one was last on my list that I wanted to try, but the only one actually in stock, so here goes:

Muddy, copper/brown in color, very light tan 2-3 finger head. Head is sticking around for the long haul, so looks like I'm not waiting before sipping.

Very smoky and woody. There's some faint citrus and graininess in the back...maybe not faint, but the smoke is rather pronounced and may be hindering the other aromas. That seems to be a common theme among smoked beers, so it must just come with the territory. I like it though.

The smoke isn't too strong in the taste, and there's a lot going on with it. Hits nicely at the start, and remnants of it follow through out the taste. A nice citrus, banana bread, yeasty graininess presents itself after the smoke, and it's hugely pleasant. I was apprehensive about a smoked wheat, but the both actually compliment themselves quite well. The finish is smoky and a bit lingering.

The feel is smooth, lightly crisp, light-medium in body and a mildly creamy texture.

Wonderfully smoky, surprisingly nice combo with the wheat, but more than one of these treats could wreak havoc on the senses. Definitely worthy to try if you see it! Hope to try the Urbock and Maerzen next time it's in stock...

After many minutes, and nearly half way through, the heads still kickin' it. Stellar retention!

Notes: Purchased for $4.99; poured into a tulip glass; heavy sedimentation in bottle.

A: ruby red brew with a giant, fluffy off-white head that persisted for quite a while but left little lace.

S: smells just as you would imagine a smoke beer brewed with wheat would--sweet notes of citrus and banana give way to a solid but not overpowering smoke aroma.

T: The citrusy flavors of a very delicate wheat beer quickly fade to solid but not too powerful flavors of campfire and charred meat.

M: This brew is highly effervescent and light but slightly grainy in texture. The smoke flavor definitely covers the palate but doesn't overstay its welcome.

D: I'd never consider this style a session beer, but this is probably as easy-drinking as rauchbier comes and would be a great way to introduce somebody to this rare yet interesting and flavorful style. A great brew and an even better conversation piece.

pours a hazy orange with a thick cap of white head. the head drops slowly and leaves a bit of spotty lace.

aroma is good. smokey! rich deep meaty smoke, with a nice weizen spice hiding behind it. light caramel. lightly earthy. whole wheat bread. bit of biscuit and grain.

taste is great. nice and smokey, but it seems slightly more restrained, or perhaps integrated, than in the aroma. light caramel. lovely weizen spice. whole wheat bread. bit of caraway rye too. touch of biscuit and grain. hint of alcohol. nice earthy character.

mouthfeel is good. just under medium body. medium carbonation level.

drinkability is great. excellent integration between the smoke and the weizen. these guys do good smoked beer. already looking forward to the urbock that's on deck!

500 ml bottle picked up in Buffalo.

Pours a very lightly hazed orange, some dark amber hues, very thick white head forms, slowly settles down to a medium layer and ring around the glass, big chunks of lace stick to the glass, looks nice.

Smell is real nice, big woody smokiness, nice malt character, a bit of biscuity sweetness, very faint banana and a touch of spice, a bit of beef jerky and campfire smokiness, light wheat, nice.

Taste is really nice, very light smokiness, woody, a bit of oak/mesquite, a touch of wheat and banana, lightly spicy, beef jerky, light citrus acidity in the finish, a bit of bread, yeasty finish.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation, very nice smokiness, not too much and not too little. Nice stuff.

500 ml bottle, BB date reads June 2011, into tulip. Pours muddy chestnut brown body with mahogany highlits topped by thick, moussy, extremely stable beige crown that clings to the walls and although slowly shrinks never dies.The aroma is bacon-like smokiness masking the qualities of the underlying beer although bananaish notes emerge together with bready, doughy wheat-malt. The flavor is dominated by bacon-like smokiness with greasy notes and burnt wood touch rolled in wheat perceived as bread, followed by low hoppy bitterness towards the finish which is quite dry due to the moderate carbonation and smoke. The wheaty texture imparts creamy fullness to the body. Unfortunately the bananaish sweetness combined with bacon is quite odd and reduces the the drinkability. Although the color is dark the flavor/aroma profile reminds me more of a classic Weizen than Dunkelweizen. There was no caramel or toasty-melanoidin qualities typical of Wienna and/or Munich malt used in Dunkelweizens. Besides, the color of the Rauchbier is usually darker than the color of the non-smoked base style, explaining the dim appearance.

Bought 0.5 liters in Prague 12/2010 Bad Times-pivotéka.
Nice sweet flavor with accents of smoke and taste "the eggs", but this does not detract from the quality of beer, just the opposite! I like to buy this beer somewhere else and would like to see pulled in Bamberg, Germany - where he maintained a beer called Rauchbier

Tawny amber with a receding off-white crown. Opaque, almost inscrutable.

Powerful whiff of slow-roasted malts, deli meats, and charred wood.

A rush of wheaty malt seasoned with cloves opens into a smoky expanse of aged deli meats. A small wood fire burns slowly on the sensory periphery letting off aromas of charred cedar. Long, smoky aftertaste, ends fresh, watery, and alive.

On the boundary between soggy and chewy. Carbonation firms it up, creating a crisp clean brew.

Very balanced. Smokiness threatens to overwhelm the other flavors but never carries through.

Had a bottle of this over Christmas and I was not disappointed.

Appearance was very black, almost motor oil like, with no head and minimal lacing on the sides of the glass. It resembled a dark chocolate brown with hints of amber colors.

Smell was very strong in hops and very smoky, almost like smelling an outdoor meat smoker. Very rich in aroma and definitely a crafty work of art.

Taste was delicious. The smoke flavors with the roasted hops made this an excellent brew. Very hearty too, this is definitely not for the light-hearted.

Mouthfeel was thick and satisfying. Again, definitely a relaxing and thick brew.

Drinkability is good. This is the first rauchbier I've tried and it's definitely a great one. Looking forward to trying more of this style in the future.

instead of being a total beer hack and reviewing a xmas beer this evening I did the ole blind grab a bottle from the rack selection, and here is what I rolled...

the head proofs quicker than bread on crack, it settles pretty quickly collapsing from the outside in leaving a meniscus of tighter foam in the middle as the sides slowly gurgle lower towards the brew itself, ruby brown hue, decent lacing, active carbonation keeps the head right on the surface the entire time, nice.

woodsy smoke with some dry grass, not as intense as some of this brewer's other varieties, this does ring of smokehouse almonds at times though... man rauchbiers are really appetizing, at least to this guy (points to thumbs at self), beyond the smoke there is a light fruit component, somewhere in the peach/banana land area. the smoke dominates but that is ok in my book.

taste etc...
smooth as silk body wise, the flavor is... um? looking for it. This is a pretty bland player. The smoke finally starts to assert itself about halfway through. This one drinks well enough but without the smoke it would be almost a total bomb. With the smoke though this pairs with salted food so damn well. Maybe that is this beer's place, simply and accouterments to a meal adding in a dimension. -

a tame rauch but a rauch none the less. Probably interesting to cook with... I'll have to try that.

this paired well with the cowboys losing to arizona...

Reviewed on 5/2/2010. Bottle. Pours a cloudy dirty brown with a thick off-white head. Aroma of smoke, wheat, clove, spices. Flavor of bitter smoke with some yeast and wheaty notes in the finish. Not as rich and meaty as the other Schlenkerlas, which is a negative for me. It is less smoky too. Very drinkable though.

I picked up an Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche tulip this past weekend, and given that bottles haven't showed up yet, the only thing I could think of to inaugurate it was a bottle of the Weizen, a beer I've had on tap and out of bottles in the past, but never reviewed.

A beautiful, clear deep ruby red with a dense, light brown head with good retention, there's plenty of carbonation present. Lacing is minimal.

The nose is classic Schlenkerla. Not as meaty as their other beers, this is still intensely smoky with a more woody, leafy smoke, almost peat like. Behind the smoke, I do get just a little bit of banana, something I haven't noticed the previous times I've had this beer. Sweetness is low, but the smokiness and the mild fruitiness work well together.

The palate opens surprisingly mild, given how noticeable the smoke is on the nose. Almost a little watery and lacking, there's a blend of smoke, burning leaves and a mild fruit character. The mid-palate is lacking, there's no real flavor there. The light body of a weizen doesn't take on the smoky intensity particularly well, especially the drying, mildly fruity, mildly spicy finish. No hops are present. Carbonation is high and scrubbing, lending a mild seltzer-like acidity to the finish. Probably my least favorite Aecht beer.

Pours a cloudy mahogany with sunburst highlights. Head is creamy, clumpy and epic, with some serious staying power. What a beautiful beer.

Aroma is smokey, wheaty and woody. My friend put it perfectly when he said it smells like a "summer bonfire."

Flavor doesn't work for me, unfortunately. This is essentially a "Rauch-dunkelweizen" and the flavor profiles of these styles don't harmonize very well. The Weizen flavors of clove and spice create a very astringent, medicinal beer when combined with the intense smokiness. The toasty, lightly chocolatey malts make this a complex beer, but I don't think it works in the end. This is also probably the driest wheat beer I've had. The mouthfeel is still excellent: fluffy, creamy and light, with superfine carbonation. As far as drinkability goes, this is not a drain pour, but it's kind of disappointing.

If all I could do with this beer were look at it and smell it, then I would give it high marks. Alas, I had to drink it, and it didn't really impress me as much as the other Schlenkerla beers.

A light brown head of three fingers with thick clinging lace of head like quality. Color is a 28 on the SRM beer color chart. Smell of smoked sausage, spices, and wheat. Tastes of smoked ham, apple, cinnamon, black pepper and coffee. Big body of cream like feeling in my mouth. A very complex flavorful beer that I will like to sample again in the future.

Pours a very nice rosewood brown with a good solid creamy head... almost looks like a nitro-head! No lacings in my glass.

Light campfire on the nose. Won't smack you in the head like their flagship though it's certainly there. Touch of spice lingering behind.

Smoke right up front. Carbonation helps the spice take over a bit and you get a bit of clove. Banana is there but overpowered by the smoke near the finish. Long smokey aftertaste.

A interesting beer, well worth a taste. Undecided on just how well the smoke works for the style. Maybe could use a bit more pronounced weizen flavours or just a touch less smoke.

A: A dark burnt copper with a nice thick and creamy off white head. As it disapates it leaves a thick ring of lacing.

S: This is my first rauchbeir. The the smell is so interesting. There's some pork qualities like hotdogs and bacon. Smells like a fireplaces ashes after a fire has recently burned out. I'm dying to taste this.

T: The smoke taste is lighter then the aroma. It's still pretty much the only flavor though. It's mostly on the aftertaste. It tastes like a smokey ham or hickory smoked bacon.

M: light bodied but really smooth and goes down easily. Light carbonation but it's right on.

Overall: Ive never had a rauchbier and I tend to ignore German beers for some reason. I guess that's kind of wrong considering my great grand parents were born in said country. I liked this beer alot. It's very easy to drink and a great beginer smoked beer. Very nice and I would definitely drink again.

A- Pours a cloudy/murky brown color. The head is a very light tan, 1 finger in height. No lacing is present.

S- Notes of banana, clove, smoke, meatiness. Smells like you spilled a hefeweizen in a butcher shop.

T- Very wheaty in the taste, notes of toffee, caramel. Definitely some smoke in there. Finishes slightly dry with a wheaty twang.

M- Very low carbonation.

D- Pretty drinkable, but nothing amazing.

Pours a medium brown with an off white head. The nose is not nearly as strong as others in their lineup, with a decent amount of smoked wood and not as much char or meaty character. The body is certainly lighter without as much smokey character. A bit dry and light with the wheat, although the flavor from that certainly isn't present. The taste is more toward the mild end of the smoke spectrum and, given that, it's a bit more bland as there isn't really much else to complement it. It drinks fairly well, but not nearly as exciting as the Urbock or Marzen, in my opinion.

Poured from a bottle into my trusty Troegs pint glass.

Pours a dark, translucent brown with yellowy edges. Pretty hard to see through. There's a FAT 2+ inch head as it collects in the glass, I had to wait a few moments for it to recede to pour more. The lacing is sticky and fluffy at the same time. Quite the looker, this beer.

The smell... oh God the smell. This needs its own paragraph, because I have no idea where to begin with this. It is absolutely like no other beer I've smelled before. I'm getting aromas of smoked pork and sausages over an open wood fire. This smell definitely belongs in a delicatessen or a butcher shop or something, not a beer! Absolutely crazy. I can detect just a hint of that weizen malt given a few deep sniffs, but it's very well hidden behind all that smokiness.

I thought I was prepared for the taste, but just... damn. Smoky meats with just a bit of a charred flavor... how does something like this get into a beer? As I'm marveling at this remarkable feat of brewmastery, the subtle malty backbone appears, reminding me that I'm drinking a weizen-style beer. Wheat and yeastiness are subdued, but definitely present as they round out the back end. I get just a subtle hint of weizen banana and fruit flavor as the brew rides down smooth. The minimal aftertaste doesn't have any more wheat for me, however, instead being full of smoked meat. Hops are undetectable, and there is no bitterness. Just a slight bit of astringency from the wheat. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a subtle weizen chewiness. Finishes smooth and dry.

After getting past the initial sensory overload, I found this beer to be quite the quaffable brew. I picked a weizen-esque rauchbier for my first experience into the style and I'm glad I did, because I'm able to latch onto that something I like and compare and contrast it with the extremely unique smokiness. It was certainly an eye-opening drink.

Pours a clear, amber color. 1/3 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and slight lacing. Smells of strong smoke, slight sweet malt, and slight roasted malt. Fits the style of smooth and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of smoke, sweet malt, slight yeast, and slight earthy malt. Overall, another good rauchbier from aecht.

I poured into a pint glass to a couple inches of off white head. It is burnt orange in color. The aroma is that wonderful smoked pork smell that accompanies rauchbier. The taste is smoky, but doesn't seem to have that smoked pork flavor that others have had. I can get the wheat flavor and aroma trying to cut through the smoke. This beer is not as smoky as the marzen, which I preferred. This milder offering may be favored by consumers who like a more subtle smoke presence. I'm still a big fan of the style. I've liked them all so far.

Poured into a glass from a bottle.

A - Pours a dark copper, forming a massive three fingers of head, leaving light lacing on the glass.

S - Strong smoked malt (smoked meat and spice)aroma dominates the nose.

T - The taste is heavily dominated by the smoke, consisting of the smoked malts, but turns slightly sweet through the taste as the malted wheat comes through. Not as intense as the other rauchbiers by this brewery, but a little cleaner and more complex falvor wise.

M - Medium bodied and very smooth and clean. Good amount of carbonation.

D - It does not get any better than a good rauchbier! The flavor is smooth and unique and very drinkable for a rauchbier! An amazing beer overall.

Hey I'll admit up front this is the first smoke beer I'd ever tried and although reading gives a hint what to expect it really doesn't prepare you for the experience or make it any easier to enjoy.

Poured an earthy raw umber in color which I thought unique. Starts with a big 2" head which settles down to 1/4" in time. I was genuinely surprised that the intensity of the smell was not as pronounced in the taste. With the bouquet I get not just the bacon and smoked meats and cheeses others reference but also sort of that lit "puck" smell you get during 4th of July firework play. Do you know what I mean by puck? Those 10" sticks dipped in something flammable, kind of lookin like elongated corn dogs? Ha. Anyway this beer kind of smells like something your mom would yell at you for if she caught you putting it in your mouth. Sorry, just being honest. Anyway, it's a wheat beer and that's pretty much the taste with just subdued notes of the bouquet in the taste itself. And I thought it a touch sour.

Look either you love or you hate something like this. Can't say I love it. I respect it, I recognize it's intensities are unique and thus in their own way gourmet. Can't say all I want to drink is smoke beer after this. In fact I think I'll wait quite a while before I try another one.

Poured from a 1 pint 9 ounce (16.9 ounces?) bottle into a Smithwick's pint glass.

A: Two fingers of nice head appear on the top. The beer itself darkens from bottom to top, chestnut to mahogany. Several bubbles stuck to the bottom of the glass rise up.

S: The expected smokiness comes laden with the scent of smoked meat (pork comes to mind). This is not nearly as strong smelling as its cousin (Märzen), and has a faint metallic tinge. Smelling closely one can perhaps smell strains of yeast familiar to other wheat beers.

T: Good, but not great. I loved the Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen, and I like wheat beers, so my expectations were high. It's possible the novelty of rauchbier has worn off, but I think it's mostly because the Weizen isn't as strong an effort. The beer is a little meaty, pleasantly so, with definite wheaty tones. To Schlenkerla's credit, this tastes like a wheat beer with smoke in it. It's good, but nothing special. The aftertaste is rather bland, with only a hint of smoke remaining.

M: Carbonated and mostly unremarkable, except for the metallic feeling that creeps in.

D: The smokey attributes of this beer nullify the usual drinkability of wheat beers. It's not HARD to drink, but it's not easy either. In the future, if I want a rauchbier, I'll stick to the Märzen, which is what I recommend in favour of this beer.

A: Good head, color is a dark brown with hints of yellow when held up to the light. It was rather odd, this is the first time I have seen a beer with such a coloration.

S: Smells like you would expect a Schlenkerla beer to smell. Bacon, ham, maybe some wood... weird but... angenehm

T: I mostly taste the smoky meat flavor. This beer is perhaps a bit sweeter than the Märzen. I can also notice some more malts or bread flavors in this one.

M: It is medium, not as thick as expected. I would also expect more carbonation from a Weizen. It was all a little "meh".

D: Drinkable is not what I would call this beer. It was a nice treat though...
