Style: Munich Helles Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.30%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It's lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”.

Amazing to find a beer that's so different and original: it earns high marks on the first go.
A) pours a clear, dark pale golden body, with a thin cap that films and laces a few dots.
S) Pleasant fall damp air tinged with campfire smoke. Plus pale malt, honey lathered on crackers, and floral hops.
T) Follows smell, with MORE smoke, as in smoked salmon or bacon, honey, on malt and white crackers, and landing in a fall flower bed mixed with fallen, earthy damp leaves and forest floor. Delicious and complex, perfect with raw oysters.
F) Feel is soft, medium weight, smooth, finishing off-dry, and with lingering resonance.
O) My first experience of a great smoke in beer. Must try. Must try them all now!

Poured into a lager glass, the appearance was a semi-dark pale gold color with a finger's worth of white foamy head that slid off at a moderate pace. Some lace ran here and there, somewhat messy.
The aroma had a nice sweet smoky meatiness to it running into the some smooth soothing bready malts and following through with a light earthiness and a little bit of grassiness.
The flavor was a gentle balance between the smoke and the sweet dipping into each other nicely to ride on into the aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was between light and medium bodied with a good sessionability about it. Carbonation felt good. ABV felt spot on. Pretty smooth along my tongue and finished with some bready lager smoothness.
Overall, its super awesome as a rauchbier with some mild "Helles Lager" qualities coming out here and there. Definitely would want to have again.

Consumed 8/25/17

A: Medium to pale gold - clear - pours with a medium size white head, fades to a wispy cap, leaves some nice streaks of lacing

S: Smoke is probably the first thing anyone would notice in this aroma, mostly because it's a Helles and smoke shouldn't be here... this being the legendary exception - nice amount of smoke, as if you're smelling a nearby fire pit - some grainy, bready malts underneath - bread dough, bread, biscuits, maybe a touch of toast - light sweetness

T: Delicate Helles base somehow in balance with a very delicate amount of smoke - lightly smoky earth, like a recently smothered campfire - bread dough, freshly baked bread, biscuits, dinner rolls - lightly sweet - some lager yeast, touch of spice, grass - the smoke flavor seems to become less and less prominent as time passes - some light sweetness, lingering grains

M: Light body, medium carbonation, crisp finish with some bite from the smoke

O: #smokewithoutsmoke

I've reviewed (and drank) a lot of Helles this summer. I've been waiting to drink Schlenkerla Helles. It's such an anomaly. The light sweetness from the base contrasts so nicely with the smoke. I've never really quite understood it until now. It's wonderful.

500ml bottle poured into a tulip glass

A: nice clarity bright amber burnished gold body. head was a nice white creamy looking and fairly big it laces the glass well.

S: light smoke campfire with a nice underlying doughiness

T: lots of the camp fire taste it's so layered like waves of smoke on the tongue but then you get a nice light breadiness.

M: medium to lighter body decent carbonation.

O: this beer is pretty good but you better like smoked beers. It's layered and once you get used to it it's a nice Helles.

1pt, 0.9fl bottle, served in a pilsner glass. No date that I could find on the bottle.

Appearance: Mostly clear pale gold with a tiny bit of haze. Thin white head on top, with persistent fine strands of lacing.

Smell: Smoky with a bit of meatiness to it.

Taste: Light smokiness from start to finish. Bready malt - not as crisp as I would have expected. Light bitterness at the finish - hops are muted.

Mouthfeel: Good carbonation, but a bit soft and chewy underneath it rather than as crisp as I would have expected for a lager. Dry finish.

Overall / Drinkability: Not as flavorful as the Urbock by the same brewer and I wonder if I have an old bottle. It's okay, but not as good as I've heard this beer is. Or perhaps I need to have more malt with smokiness to really enjoy it. In any case, good to try and interesting, but not interesting enough to try again. Maybe it would have paired better with food.

500ml bottle $4.99. I usually avoid smoked beers but the label description intrigued me. Dark yellow color, great head with a lot of lacing. Aroma is smoky but not overpowering, my wife said "smells like ham". Smoky flavor as well, almost rubber-like but not offensive. Ok beer and if you like smoked beers you'll probably be in heaven.

i had no idea it was even possible to do smoke so delicately in a beer, and while the import game is seemingly getting weaker in colorado, these types of beers are all over missouri, and i am sure glad i make it out this way somewhat regularly to gobble them up. the helles, the lightest of these beers, at least that i have seen, and a smoked beer that even folks who dont like the style can get into, at least that was my experience with it tonight, where a couple of smoked beer doubters were converted with this one. not quite blonde on color because of the smoked portion, with a slight iodine nose, but mostly recently extinguished campfire and wet soil, its awesome. light and heavy at the same time, so few beers do that at all, let alone well. the german pils type malt meshing with the smoked element really nicely, and i appreciate it for not being so malty, but also, the smoke is the malt, so its malty by definition, it really is a mindbender, but the effervescence and relative dryness are both key to its drinkability, and the price point is hard to argue. high quality and weird and good at once, which i love more than anything. impressive beer, earthy and night timey, last beer sort of stuff, but i could also drink like five pints of it in the right context. awesome stuff, as good and memorable as any of their others, loosely autumnal, and just really brilliant if you like the style. the smoke in a helles is new to me, and its wonderful!

I don't see a bottle or import date listed.

Appearance: The body is a slightly hazy medium shade of gold. It has a medium white head. It leaves excellent lacing.

Aroma: There is a light wood smoke aroma.

Taste: Up front there is this light sweet grain flavor with a touch of honey and a moderate smokey flavor. The smoke fades quite a bit as the beer passes over the tongue and the sweetness becomes more apparent. Right at the end there is this light bitterness with a bit of woody and earthy flavor. The beer always stays interesting and it is memorable.

Mouthfeel: It is very drinkable with a light body. It finishes wet and refreshing on the palate with a touch of final sweetness and a bite of bitterness on the tongue.

Overall: What's really great about this beer is that it manages to deliver smoke but it doesn't stomp out the sweet malt flavor. For fans of sweeter beers I would highly recommend this. I really enjoyed it and I would drink it again.

A: [3.50] The bottle lists the ABV (4.3%) but I can't find a date. The beer is a golden lager color and has 1 finger of chunky white head.

S: [3.25] Rust, smoke (rauch beer style) and spiciness.

T: [3.25] The flavors are muted versions of the nose. Light rust, rauch/bacon/smoke

M: [3.50] The body is mild and crisp.

O: [3.25] Overall she is disappointing. The smoke is interesting but not helpful. This is just a miss overall. Since there is no date it is possible that age is a factor.
