Smoked beer - didn't even know it existed. After this one I want more - a fantastic, hearty mouth feel and flavour unlike anything I've ever had. If you're into really strong porters or Russian stouts, give this a try, you won't be disappointed.

A: Poured into a mug to a deep brown topped by a two finger light tan head that retains well and leaves some lacing
S: Smells of smoke and sweet malts. It reminds me a lot of the smell you get when you walk into a legit BBQ joint
T: Taste is sweet caramel malts with some nice meaty smoke flavors. That's really about all that this beer has going on is just the sweetness from the malts and the acrid smokiness. The two flavors riff of of each other pretty well to provide balance though. The swallow on this beer is more caramel and toffee sweetness that's a little fruity with some lingering smoke.
M: This beer has a creamy medium mouthfeel with carbonation that is a little soft but adequate. The beer finishes on the dry side of things but that's okay.
O: Overall this beer is kind of like drinking a smoked pork shoulder and there's nothing wrong with that. There isn't a lot going on but it's fun to drink and well executed. Definitely an interesting beer to try.

Poured from the bottle into a glass.

Dark brown color; ruby when held to the light.

Khaki head; strong, spotty lace.

Smells of smoke and pork. Rauch goodness.

Medium mouthfeel.

Another winner from Schlenkerla; a touch watery compared to the Urbock, but very drinkable & tasty. A session rauch?!

I don't see any import date:

Appearance: This looks absolutely wonderful. The body of the beer is dark brown and has very dark brown highlights with hints of burnt umber in the light, great clarity, all beneath a beautiful eggshell white head with just a touch of light tan.

Aroma: Massive smoky wood aroma. It conjures so many memories of campfires that it is ridiculous.

Taste: It has a very light caramel flavor that is present with the beer on the palate but disappears as soon as it is swallowed. A smoky wood flavor is also there but in a much lighter presence than the aroma. There is just a touch of burnt coal way in the background but the overall flavor of the beer is very light, retracted, and muted.

Mouthfeel: It is a very light and easy drinking beer. The carbonation is great. It doesn't have much presence on the palate though. If I had no olfactory sense I would feel like I was drinking water.

Overall: The appearance and the aroma literally could not be improved upon but the flavor of the beer is weak and the mouthfeel leaves much to be desired. This is the kind of beer that makes you say "why isn't there more flavor?" If this is the only beer you can find from Schlenkerla then I would recommend picking it up. If it is not then I would recommend something else. As a Rauchbier it is still head and shoulders over nearly every other brewery but the delineation occurs between the very beers that Schlenkerla makes (or more than just nearly). As an "overall" recommendation I would still recommend it.

This is a fantastic beer, and is my go to choice for introducing someone to the wonders of a smoked malt beer. You are greeted immediately with the strong aroma of a campfire when cracking this beer open. The malts obviously impart that smoke flavor, but there's also a toastiness and a very mild sweetness to balance it out. An amazing seasonal that should never be missed.

Picked up a pint bottle from TW Arrowhead in late July for $6.99.

Beer poured amber brown with a beautiful long lasting white head.

Nose is smoked malts, brisket, pulled pork, and other goodness that comes out of my smoker.

Initial taste was heavy on the smoked meats. Subsequent sips had the smoke going blending in nicely with the slightly sweet quality of the fermented malts. Hopping rate could have been a bit more to balance it better for my pallet but was good nonetheless.

Feel was medium bodied and neither smooth or refreshing.

Overall a very nice beer that is a must try for the smoked meat aficionados out there. Had samples of this probably 15 years ago from a friend whose nephews brought some back from Germany.

Immediate scents of a campfire under the silhouette of a full moon. Nice dark ruby red colour. Light carbonation, enough to quench the thirst of a pig roasting on said campfire. Taste has subtle bitterness from hops, nice malted barley hints, and a subtle finish of a smokey flavour. The smoke flavour is not at all over-powering, and adds a nice hint to remind the consumer of a well smoked salmon. A great beer overall.

16.9 oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. Sold as a single bottle from a local bottle shop. No bottle on date listed. Considered as the bench mark brand for Schlenkerla. Barley is smoked with beechwood within the historic confines of the Schlenkerla brewery located in Bamburg, Germany.

L - dark amber brown color with a little bit of highlights coming thru. Pitch black sitting down. Two finger head, no fluffiness, half and inch ring around the glass.

S - The wood is so strong on the nose it's heavenly. Beef brisket, smoked meat, campfire, beef jerky, chili, salted caramel, leather.

T - taste matches the aroma really well. Grainy smokey dark taste, smoked meat, campfire smoke, along with the toffee notes of a marzen beer.

F - loose and watery feel, cool and calm across the tongue and quite refreshing. Smoke adds an ash type linger on the tongue like a snuffed out fireplace. Medium light in body.

O - this is one of those beers that you do not look over. Very well known amongst the beer geeks and is a bucket list beer for sure. Cheers!

Awesome. Not for everybody but a unique and enjoyable beer for many of those willing to give it a try.

Pours a medium brown with a very thin off-white head. Smells very strongly of smoke (think smoked pork shoulder or ham), some malts and spices. Taste is dominated by the smoke flavor and I really can't get past it. Some sweet caramel notes and malts are present but the smoke flavor overpowers. Glad I bought just one.

From a bottle, pours a very dark but clear brown with a thin beige head. Aroma is a musty spice. Taste has an astringent bitterness of overpowering smokiness with slight malt and caramel. An acquired taste; one's enough for me.

Very dark for a marzen with a shallow head. Moderate amount of lacing is left down the glass. The Beech wood kiln malt works its wonders. Aroma of ham, bacon, ash, wood, and some toffee. The flavor is not as impressive as the smoke qualities overpower the rest of the beer. Nice bacon and ham notes at first but it sort of wears out the palate with its intensity. Some sweetness and caramel notes but does not seem as toasty as other marzens. This is a low ABV beer and the body reflects that. Nice carbonation.
