The Red Lion in Avebury holds the distinction, of its own admission, of being the only pub in the world residing *inside* a Neolithic stone circle. That fact alone would probably make the place worth seeking out, and undoubtedly adds to its charm and mystique. However, even setting aside its unique and fascinating mise-en-scene, the Red Lion is a quintessential English pub that is well worth seeking out -- even as it is quite off the beaten path.
The building is commodious, comfortable, cozy, and inviting. Its spaciousness and multiple rooms could handle a sizable crowd; the day I visited (a Monday) our party of four was practically the only clientele in the place. The food is basic English fare, but GOOD, fresh, well-prepared pub fare -- the best fish & chips I've had at least between the Solent and the Humber.
The beer selection is not especially extensive, but everything available (cask, tap, or bottle) is of high quality. Local real ales predominate the lineup, and prices are competitive.
A pint of Greene King, a comfortable seat by a large window overlooking the long, late, cool Wiltshire summer sunset over the sheep-grazed Downs: I can think of few things finer, and few places finer to experience them.
