Nice surprise. Nitro pour on tap at the brewery. Ordered a pitcher to split with friends, and was quite surprised at the appearance. Clear body though deep black/brown color is impressive, almost a cola. Holding up to the light shows hints of caramel at the thin parts of the glass and around the edges. Most of the nitro head was left in the pitcher, a small rim in the glass, though a nice lacing trailed to the bottom. Last pour was blessed with a heap of foam.

Smell was slight, and hinted of smoked malts. Taste was perfectly orchestrated. Sweet & tart sensation from the lactic acid, dry, smokey taste from the malts, and a peaty finish with a slight sour note. Very good drink, and not a hint of the nearly 6% alcohol in it.

Big mouthfeel stout that works well on the nitro. Black with a tan head and a roasty coffee nose. The milk part showed up in the finish as the beer was chocolatey and roasty but with that lactose feel to the mouthfeel. Good beer that works well for the style

First of all, it’s pretty cool to name a fish after a punch in the face, as in “Sockeye Salmon.” Lots of fish end up with cool names like hammerhead or stingray or grouper. I don’t know who has the official job of naming fish, but my guess is they’re a diehard fan of the World Wrestling Federation.

After naming fish for wrestlers, we name beers for fish. This is also a good idea, as many beer enthusiasts have been known to drink like fish. Aside from this I see no particular reason to assign the name Sockeye to this particular stout. In contrast to the aggressive and fishy name, Sockeye is actually very sweet, and smooth. It is genuinely creamy, nearly opaque and quite sullen with minimal effect from the nitro infusion.

Sockeye tastes a bit dilute though the essential elements of a cream stout are all evident, especially the pleasant, full-bodied contours of lactose – your first carbohydrate.

This stout (now listed at 5.3% abv) was on nitro-tap at Lompoc's 5th Quadrant this past Monday when I visited. Ordered a pint with dinner.

A: In the fairly low light level, I believe this is black. OK extremely dark brown at the very least. 2-fingers of rich creamy tan head. Long retention and attractive lace. Man I'm a sucker for the nitro-tap...

S: Modest roasted malt aroma, coffee and chocolate predominantly. Pleasant but nothing outstanding.

T: Nice chocolate sweetness with lightly roasted coffee finish. In between are notes of vanilla, cream, and sweet fruit. Good balance.

M: Quite creamy (of course) with a medium body and mouthfeel. Feels a bit sticky/gummy on the lips, but otherwise is smooth and rich.

D: Goes down easy; drinkable for certain. Lacks the punch/depth in flavor of my favorite stouts, but this is a good one that I'd have again. Recommended.

On tap at New Old Lompoc.

A - Pours black with 2 fingers of mocha head. Dissipates moderately slow and leaves beautiful lacing. Impressive head retention.

S - Chocolate and lactose. That explains the retention.

T - Light roast coffee, chocolate, hints of toffee, lactose and mildly bittering hops.

M - Full-bodied and well-balanced. Very smooth.

D - This is a great beer overall. Wish they would not have added lactose so I could drink more!

Poured from nitro-tap at brewery.

A - Gorgeous dark espresso/black hue, good head and nice lace

S - lots of dark roasted notes and dark fruit; overpowered by the intense coffee aroma.

T - Again, coffee and smoke overpowering the more subtle black fruit, mocha, and bitter chocolate.

M - Texturally amazing, a little lighter body than I expected (more Porter-like as far as the body and alcohol), though the tannins are nice and chewy.

D - Smooth and relatively easy to drink, I just expected a little more 'oomph' to really give this high marks.

Inky black with no head. The colour’s good but the rest is not.

Sharp roasted aroma with some spicy alcohol. Mild dark chocolate.

Sweet malt with moderate roast and a nutty character. A bit one dimensional.

Medium-full body with moderate carbonation. Fine.

A straightforward and standard stout. Kind of run of the mill but still enjoyable.

Had on nitro-tap at New Old Lompoc Brewery in Portland, OR.

appearance - poured a dark black with a nice creamy head, light lacing on the glass

smell - coffee on the nose, a bit sweet

taste - coffee up front, not a lot of malt presence, very sweet and milky

mouthfeel - light to medium, good for a single stout

drinkability - very smooth and easy to drink
