BOTTLE acquired at NXNW and served cold into a pilsner glass.

Bottled: 02/12/15. Batch 1648, 49. Bottle 8.

Reviewed live.

HEAD: ~4 inches wide. White colour. Fair creaminess and frothiness. Nice full even consistency. A biteen soapy, to its slight detriment. Retention is good - ~6-7 minutes. Leaves a light coating of lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.

BODY: Clear pale copper with yellow hues. Average vibrance. I see no yeasty muck.

Appears well-carbonated. It's a decent looking pale ale overall. Nothing stands out as unique or special.

AROMA: Pale malts, cream, herbal & grassy hop character, floral hop notes, and a hint of graham cracker/English biscuit malt. It's a pleasant albeit pedestrian overall aroma.

Aromatic intensity is average.

No yeast character, off-character, or alcohol is detectable.

TASTE: The one-two punch of pungent floral hop notes coupled with crisp pale malts is nice, but the beer as a whole is rough around the edges. The grassy hop character isn't suitable for a pale ale (and would work better in a pilsner), and there just isn't much of a harmony of malts to hops in general. The hops should be the star of the show, and should be expressive as hell; I'd love some citrus, grapefruit, resins, oils, pine...something more than just generic floral hops. The malt backbone leans too far into English pale ale territory, with notes of biscuit malt and graham cracker lending this brew way too much sweetness.

Structurally uneven, with an oscillation between cloying sweetness and off-putting bitterness, but no middle ground. Needs serious dialing in. This build is pretty unimpressive for a pale ale, and I don't care much for the beer. Somewhat shallow, with no subtlety or intricacy to speak of.

It does suffer from some hoppy soapiness indicative that this spent too long in primary.

TEXTURE: Crisp, smooth, wet, unrefreshing, bitingly overcarbonated, and medium-bodied. Too thick and hefty on the palate, making it overbearing - especially when coupled with the cutting crispness. This just assaults the palate for no apparent reason, grating against my taste buds.

OVERALL: An underwhelming misguided attempt at a pale ale with an essential lack of balance, Py Jingo is best skipped by the discerning drinker. Perhaps the worst beer I've had so far from NXNW, but not undrinkable.
