I visited North by Northwest (or NXNW as the establishment typically refers to itself) on 23-May-2003. NXNW is a restaurant and brew on premises that according to the management is modeled after the brewpubs of the Pacific Northwest.

The interior is quite large and spacious with wood and stone predominating in the decor. Throughout there are mural-sized antique black-and-white photographs of scenes of the Pacific North West.

The menu selection is quite varied with prices ranging from about $8.00 for burgers to $20 for steaks and seafood. Many of the offerings seem to be what I would call "Nouvelle Cuisine", i.e. "Honey Glazed Game Hen", "Beef and Chicken Satay", or "Whole Cold Stream Trout". Overall, I prefer informal Texas cuisine, but that's a matter of taste.

There are six beers on tap that are brewed in house, one being a seasonal offering. The beers offered at the time of my visit were NXNW Bock, Okanagon Black Ale, Northern Light, Duckabish Amber, Py Jingo Pale Ale, and the seasonal offering NXNW Brown Ale. All of the beer selections were at least decent, some were very good.

During happy hour, a pint is $2.50, otherwise $3.25. Growlers are offered at $15.00 for a refill ($25 at other times), plus $10 for the empty growler. For those seeking mementos, NXNW logo T-Shirts, pint glasses, and the like are available.

Sat outside on a perfect September night. Didn't have any food. Service was very good except she forgot my glass of water. Had not one but two different samplers (there may have been 2 or 3 repeats in the samplers out of 6 beers but there were also other beers that were not in either sampler). All of the beers were very good to excellent except one which was fair. The high quality was evident. I very much enjoyed my visit and highly recommend a stop in to all beer travelers when in the area.

A slightly upscale brewpub. Only offer their brews, which some of their one-offs are really good. Food is good, but can be on the more expensive side for brewpubs and Austin. The burger is really good.

In San Antonio NXNW would be awesome, but for Austin... nope. A surprising number of older folks just hanging out on the front patio getting wasted. The food and service were good, just kinda reminded my of a Chili's or TGIFriday.
