I tried this seasonal with tempered hopes. Many times smoked beers are overly so. However, for my tastes this beer was perfectly moderately smoked. It worked very well with the earthy funk of this farmhouse ale, and the German malts used to brew it. It left me wanting more.

Had on tap. Somewhat hazy golden amber body with a very thin cap and lacing. Smell features the smoked caramel malt, with a hint of floral yeast, funk, and herbal hops. Taste does the smoke well, it is a star but doesn't ruin its accomplishes of flowers, caramel, grains, playful funk, and slight botanicals. Feel is smoky, malty, warm, and slightly wild. A strange beer that I actually thought was pretty good but don't know if I need to have again.

Pours an amber hue, some smoke and banana on the nose. The smoke is subtle and works well with the banana and clove esters. It's kind of a prosciutto wrapped banana, which might not sound good, but it wasn't bad. The execution of this is what stands out the most to me.

Weak and small head that didn't last, pours a dark amber colour of grade A maple syrup. Smells faintly of burning incense and wood. Slightly malty and pine at front giving way to mild smoke but not overpowering, not at all like a mouthful of smoke. Very balanced. Medium body, finish of mild incense smoke.

On tap at Prohibition Pig, Waterbury, VT. This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a moderately semi-dark hazy ruddy brown color with no head nor lacing (bar pour, so I’m not worried). The smell started off with big malty, but not overly sweet, smokiness. A light contour of meatiness runs in to balance nicely. The taste copies the aroma nicely adding a nice little kick of earthy to musty flavor coincides nice enough to balance nicely. Earthy malt in the aftertaste runs into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium in body with a light sessionable malty alcohol quality about it on my tongue. Overall, nice Bier de Garde, I’d have again.

On-tap at Mugs Alehouse, Brooklyn, NY
A: The beer is hazy rosé to amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of smoked malts are present in the nose.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste is quite smoky, but doesn't have any flavors of iodine or Band-Aid that you might expect to accompany the smoke.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is more like a "lite" version of a Rauchbier than a saison. Nevertheless, it is easy to drink and might appeal to people who do not like the iodine and Band-Aid flavors normally associated with smoky beers.
Serving type: on-tap
